One thing for you non-citizens of Liberty Island to keep in mind:

The point of this thread is to discuss methodologies to best re-create what was lost when Kidatopia was formed.

These are ideas in the roughest-hewn form of their entire lives, because we did not even BEGIN this process until yesterday evening. We've so far, had less than twenty four hours to knock together some ideas and the beginnings of a plan.

Expect to see us shift gears, debate amongst ourselves, and change our minds repeatedly.

Kid has been a self proclaimed communist for four years, and HIS utopian plan has holes big enough to drive a train through.

We've had less than twenty four hours so far....I'd say we're off to a rather strong start...

Bottom line is that people needed ditches, and he was able to provide them, so he got rich.

You said he got rich digging ditches, which you now say is not true.

Put an end to popups!

Even in Kid's utopia there are going to be people working the system to get ahead. Black Markets thrive in communist societies. Therefore I will remain in the Utopia until such time as the island community creates something the Utopians want.

Having a ready source inside will help the island in 2 ways:

1. A market for their goods.

2. A way to get equpment and other things neccesary for their survival.

Since I am smart enough to live within the system and exploit it, I will be invaluable to the island.

ACK!

Tubes...we'll arrange to contact you on the short wave just as soon as we've landed then....and if you can find a source for some tools on the black market, that's one thing we're in short supply of....Kidicious Prime has forbidden any tools be taken with us....now, we can make primitive farming implements to get us by, and Flubber's got a plan to maybe get some out, but IMO, he's taking a personal risk to do so. If Kid catches him en route to the island and sinks his boat, we lost our ownly legal mind thus far. (I admire the courageousness, Master Flubber, but worry over losing your talents here...we need you more than the sharks)

Combining the basic plan I've outlined with Master Flubbers would seem to me to be the best of both worlds. The governing body could then spend its time doing the infrastructure work (as well it should), opening the door for capitalist enterprises to begin immediately.

We'll still be forced into using the barter system until the infrastructure is in place to do something different, but actually this brings us closer to the trading companies that plied the new world, which bodes well.

To that end then, the government should put itself into a position of "selling" (for barter) fishing plots and farm acrage to capitalistic enterprises to get them started.

Flub, does this bring the two ideas close enough together to mesh?

And Kid....while I realize that in a few years time, our island home will, no doubt, become the A#1 tourist spot for fat cat party elites, what are you doing skulking around the island now? Don't you have Kidatopia to run?

I mean, you're more than welcome to stay, of course, but if you're going to stay, then perhaps you'd be good enough to lend a hand in some way...

-=Vel=-

EDIT: And yes, it is. In less than 24 hours we've reached parity with the Kidatopia development, and will soon be steaming past it.

I'd call that progress...

What's remarkable is that you all are so sure you will be happy on your little island, because you are all confident that you will make it to the top of the food chain. The thing is that only a small portion of you will make it to the top. The rest of you will wallow on the bottom and beg us to free you from your exploitation.

That's how capitalism works. There is no room at the top for everyone.

This is the only part of that post I disagree with. Those of us moving to the island are well aware that we won't all make it to the top, but we're also well aware that we have just as much chance to be in that small group at the top as anybody else. Personally, I value the freedom to fail on my own merits over the guarantee of a minimum standard of living.

Not everyone will be at the "top" but if given an equal start I would bet that our "poorest" person would be better off than anyone in kidland, after a while. The reason . . . only people that want to work hard and get ahead will want to join. If each of our people is more productive than a Kidland drone, we can surpass Kidland.

On an island with few people and limited resources, we are a microcosm of a free market economy in which labour and resources are both scarce. But labour cannot bid up their wage too much so that it becomes impossible to pay.

Oh and vel, we obviously need both a government and a number of business entities. The government would need to set out the basic rules of the society. Obviously someone needs to get some pay to do all that so it seems only appropriate that there be an auction for some limited resources like housing plots, farmland and the like. I don't know if we will need any taxes or not since I son't know if the government will supply services like water and sanitation. The other option of course is for some entity to agree to provide those services at an annual fee. Maybe I do it and take 2 fish or some eggs a week in return for the use of latrine-- That seems only fair as I would have to be digging new ones from time to time

** obviously the government would have to have laws prohibiting the cutting of banana trees and laws regarding basic sanitation-- you know don't sh** where you live

There is much to work out

Actually I thought of that but two things

2. Obviously while LCC could do some things well with this list, I am hoping otehrs would note the notable missing items such as seed which I thought was a much more notable omission than feed

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Oh and to the doubter about fresh water. Apparently our island has a rather large pond which feeds a small stream and rains are frequent. In addition, while our island may be small, it is linked to several others in a coral chain. It is estimated that the chain is almost 20 miles in length and it is possible to wade from one to the other without much difficulty. Included in the nearby islands are a couple of islets that are less than a hundred yards in diametre and have no large animals but ample vegetation. Either the government or a pribate industry may be able to find uses for these

Some good news and some bad within my research into oceanic islands. LOts of plant life and no predators but water is the biggest problem so my dream of ample water may be hard to realize.

http://www.panda.org/news_facts/edu...oceaniclife.cfm
-----------------------------------------------------------

• Flightless insects

Island insects risk being blown out to sea by the wind, so many have evolved into flightless forms. The strip-like wings of a fly found on Tristan da Cunha and Gough islands are useless for flight. Similar trends can be seen in the grasshoppers of the Galapagos Islands, and moths on other islands.

• Gigantic Reptiles

Oceanic islands have few reptiles, but those that evolve here become unusually large, perhaps because there is no competition from large mammals for space or food.

The Komodo dragon found only on Komodo Island and a few continental islands in the Sunda group in Indonesia is the world's largest lizard, growing to 2.5m long! The giant tortoises of Aldabra and the Galapagos Islands grow to gigantic sizes.

• Conservation Concern

Island flora and fauna are particularly vulnerable to extinction, and animals brought on to islands by humans can wreak havoc. For example, because island plants have not developed defenses (like spines, thorns or a nasty taste) against large herbivores, they are easily wiped out when people bring in domestic stock like goats. Flightless and ground-nesting birds are defenceless against pet cats and the rats that come off ships.

Humans are affecting island wildlife in other ways. Oceanic islands are favourite holiday destinations and uncontrolled tourism can destroy wildlife habitats, especially along the coasts. Large areas of unique island vegetation have been cleared for pineapple plantations in Hawaii.
