Actually, the Washington Post has a nice poll put together that has Kerry ahead by 2 percentage points, though that's within the margin of error.
The key thing to note is that this has proportionate representation of republicans, democrats, and independents compared that existed in the 2000 election (it is part of their methodology). In other words, Kerry is going to get a boost in the popular vote compared to that poll.
The more time passes, the more it looks like Kerry is going to win. Quite frankly there is very little that can happen in the world to help Bush, but we are inundated nearly daily with further failings of the current administration.
There are only a few reasons why this race is even close. The tendency to back the incumbant just because he's incumbant (enhanced by 9/11 and the war). The fact that administration is so secretive it can be hard to have a good look at its failings. The fact the media isn't doing their job and is failing America. And lastly the Karl Rove certainly is a big boon to Bush, especially given the third reason I gave. Otherwise this would be a landslide victory for Kerry.
