To compare apples to apples you have to compare percentages and not total numbers of votes as the population changes over time.

Clinton set the record for most votes during both of his races but he never got more a majority. Percentages are what counts.

I am always quite surprised by the way the country splits. The red states stay red, the blue states stay blue with only 7-8 states switching sides.

Would i be correct in assuming that a lot of the blue states (New England, California, New York) pay more money into the federal kitty than they get out of it? And that a significant number of the red states take more out than they put in?

Maybe they should start thinking about secession...

Yes, they do, lightblue. On the other hand, the red states provide a much higher proportion of soldiers than do the blue states, for instance.

Not exactly. The youth vote was the highest in a long time but every sector had a higher turn out so the percentage of the vote which was youth was virtually unchanged. In absolute terms it was a blow out year for the youth vote but their participation rate was still the lowest of any group.

The number of applications to the Socialist Party has jumped in the last 24 hours. As I said before, this election was a win-win situation for us. Either we get rid of Bush or Bush makes a lot more socialists.

They believe it, and they identify with Bush, and so they vote for him. His general idiocy and manifest incompetance is meaningless to them (or even endearing).

Too true.

Not that it would be a bad thing.

Sadly, it will take a few more generations before secularism and science overtake those still burdened by faith in super-natural beings.

I'm an atheist and I voted for Bush so I don't want to hear any of your secular bullshit. And lets take note of how all the liberals on here are still swearing up and down that Bush's an idiot, and he's incompetent, and that the rest of the country must be idiots too. And yet here they are still trying to figure out why anyone would vote for Bush. Who is the ignoramous I ask?

The people who voted for Bush, by and large. There was poll data that proved it, ML. A majority of Bush voters didn't know his positions on the issues.

That works just fine for Bush, of course.

-Arrian

p.s. You being an atheist and voting for Bush doesn't change the fact that much of his support came from the more religious portion of our society.

Seriously, Bush isn't a know it all, no one is. That's why the President has a Cabinet and Secretary of State, to keep him advised on issues. To me, the potential Cabinet is just as important as the President. I have continually said I don't agree with everything Bush has done, but the only thing Kerry said that I supported was his proposal about increasing the number of active duty combat Brigades and the number of Active Duty Special Forces.

And that was a very Anti-Kerry policy he spouted so I didn't have much faith that he would actually do it.

Well soldiers without money doesn't work too well (look at post-USSR Russia).

The secession idea isn't serious obviously, i was jsut wondering what would happen. I doubt the red states would attack the blue states, but i guess that would at least get them out of our hair for a few years
