Put an end to popups!

The only communist state in the Arab world was North Yemen and that country continues to be filled with raving muslim fundimentalists. The communists government didn't do very well in Afghanistan either.

Of course, Bush wants permanent tax cuts and to add more tax cuts on top of this. Of course, he wants to increase spending too.

*sigh*

I'm actually serious here. I'm not going to stress over whoever is the president. Yeah it sucks for the military who has to do his whim. But it's out of my hands now. I did my duty to get rid of him. But I already have enough depression in my life, I can't be thinking about each individual life lost in Iraq. that **** drags me down.

So I will put this behind me and take a lesser interest in politics. Actually before I came here, I really wasn't interested in politics at all.

It must be the horror of losing the election that has me somewhat agreeing with Ned. The only trouble is to make sure that the democratic governments that one creates are seen as legitimate, and not as American puppet regimes. It is for this reason that it is important to work with the UN, so it is a broad spectrum of support for regimes (such as is the case in Afghanistan), and not the very limited international support (GB, Poland, Australia) that have lined up behind Iraq.

One more thing before I leave this thread.

How does the president personally affect you? This is a poll question.

To tell you the truth, I can't see it. I live my life the same way under Geroge Bush as I did under Clinton. Presidents have very little influence over my life.

Yes I do see how it affects other people. Please don't think I'm being selfish. See my Iraqi soldier example above. But I can only depress myself with such matters a finite amount of time. Or I'd go insane with grief.

Presidential policies really have no influence over my life, or anyone that I know.

Laws are based on someone's morals; that's where laws come from. If our laws were based immorals (lawlessness) rather than morals we would have an anarchy.

What conservatives really mean is that liberals are legislating immorality.

In your dreams! With Bush reelected chances are we will have a conservative Supreme Court very soon!

But if all else fails the states can still (and some did yesterday) vote on the Federal Marriage Amendment. If at least 38/50 states (3/4) and two-thirds of the house and senate vote for it then there is nothing the Supreme Court can do about it.

May the will of God and the will of the people be done.

My thoughts are that you should stop thinking of the Republican Party as being anti-gay. Being against "gay marriage" is not the same thing as being homophobic. Republicans favor domestic rights legislation. It is time for Democratic gays to drop their overly aggressive anti-Republicanism, as it only makes working together for better gay rights very difficult.

I would like to point to what almost happened to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Martin Luther King and his highly partisan organization demonstrated outside of Senator Dirksen's headquarters in Illinois. Dirksen at the time was a Republican minority leader of the Senate and was cooperating with Hubert Humphrey and Lyndon Johnson in attempting to override the Southern Democrat filibuster of the Civil Rights Act. As a result of Kings demonstration, Dirksen complained publicly and said that he would withdraw his support of the Civil Rights Act if these kind of demonstrations continued.

I hear no gay bashing from the Republican leadership. I do hear a substantial amount of Republican-bashing from gays. Republican-bashing has got to stop.

I am not Republican-bashing, since I do respect moderate Republicans who are not on a leash held by the religious right.

To say that Republicans who supported Bush's anti-gay amendment and then claim that he does not hate gays is absurd. It would be similar to saying that those who opposed interracial marriage did not hate blacks.

Republicans are legislating morality (right) not immorality (wrong).

No, freedom is a pitch.

It's like a pitcher throwing a baseball. The pitcher can throw the ball in many different ways. Whatever the pitcher (the people) pitches to the hitter (the government) goes.

quote:
Um... FYI, we already do. And they, in Lawrence v. Texas said laws against sodomy are unconstitutional.

The conservatives we have on the bench right now are RINO Republicans. That is, they are Republicans in name only; they are not really conservative.

The sad part is that 5 unelected judges have hijacked our constitution. That is all inevitably going to change soon, though. Anywhere from 2-4 of these judges could potentially retire in the next 4 years.

quote:

We have a slight Republican majority in both houses, but if Democrats keep being the idiots they are and stay too far to the left (dividing the country) then they will continue to lose seats in both the house and the senate because they are not getting their message out to the so-called "fair-minded" Americans (swing voters).

Incorrect. The government had to drag the people to accept that blacks were equal. Now they should do the same with gays.

If they leave and form another party (which it seems you want) the Republicans lose the Senate, at least. The house, probably .

Enforced it, actually. Banning homosexual sodomy is obviously against the Equal Protection Clause.

And btw, the case saying banning sodomy is unconstituonal was a SIX to Three vote.

Which has nothing to do with the fact that REPUBLICANS have BLOCKED the gay marriage amendment. Not the Democrats!

And the only one 'dividing' the country is Bush. That whole 'uniter not a divider' didn't work out too well, did it?

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Probably completely unrelated to anything, but it just struck me. I find myself feeling more sympathetic to John Kerry the person now that I know he's lost. My view on his political agenda hasn't changed (of course), but I actually feel a little sorry for him as a person now that it's all over, after digesting all the news and watching some additional footage.

A bit strange, does anyone feel the same way?
