Now there is a grand sweeping generalization...

The strength of the democratic party is in the major cities... with a lot of support coming from some of the poorest and least educated parts of this country. The Dems have always ridden on the backs of the poor and uneducated

You, DanS, Adam Smith, etc. are not people I'd consider ignorant. The part of the right-wing which I consider ignorant is that section which thinks the world was created 5800 years ago, who think that no innocent person has ever been accidentally put on death row, thinks the US found WMDs in Iraq, thinks that Iraq was involved in 9/11, etc.

It is quite similar to religion, which explains why most advocates of fundamentalism are politically conservative.

I think, though, that the conclusion gay sex is a sin is logically arrived at from a false premise. The false premise is that homosexuality is voluntary.

Most of the conservatives I know aren't ignorant... And most of them think Bush is an idiot, but would also agree the they couldn't trust Kerry. If the Dems had put up a reasonable candidate, they probably would have won the election due to many Republicans contempt for Bush. I would have loved to have had a viable alternative to Bush.

But this painting of all people who voted for Bush as ignorant and brain washed is really stupid. And this whole Dems are smarter than Repubs attitude is just silly...

Whenever I hear these broad generalizations... I just picture the ward bosses in Chicago rounding up the winos on election day so that they can cast their ballots... and you can bet they are all voting straight Democratic Party tickets

Yes, but the difference this time was, the appeal to the electorate didn't play off their bigotry.

In fact in this election one big mistake was the Democrats ignored this segment of the population.

I also think it is possible to argue the issue of abortion logically with a Christian. If one starts with a human who has become braindead, why is it or how can it be murder to disconnect life support?

If the Church finally accepts this simple proposition, then by analogy, it is not murder to disconnect life support from fetus prior to its brain becoming functional.

It's sort of funny that Liberals are being accused of looking down on people, since that is merely a contingent feature of Liberalism. Liberalism is founded upon equality and holds in low regard (i.e. treats as unequal) views that promote inequality. This is a contingent matter, if there was nobody holding such views, the attitude would vanish.

On the other hand, inequality is essential to conservatism. Conservatives, whether they like to admit it or not, always have to have some group to hold in contempt due to their love of status hierarchies. It really doesn't matter who they are, yesterday it was blacks, now it's gays, tomorrow who knows?

It was stuff my grandfather would say like that which made me less immune to the mental infection known as communism. Calling the Vietnam anti-war movement, MLK, and rock n'roll all communist movements made me think that there were two possibilities.

1) Communism, being behind so many good things, must not be that bad.

-or-

2) Conservatives were trying to slander good movements, which meant that they were opposed to good causes, which means they were not to be trusted.

It turns out both things were true.

Dems are divided between the rank and file and the elites. Demographic polls seem to illustrate this by showing increasing affiliation with the Republican party by wealth until one gets to post graduate types, who then are predominately Democrats.

Clearly those are Republican values. The Dems per

Communists promise equality and largely deliver. The problem is that equality is achieved at the cost of freedom and prosperity.
