Do you know what Charity means? There is no application- you can give charity to whomever. After all, that is the point of private charity.

serious question . . . is there nothing available that you could work at while trying to find something in your chosen field? . . . I don't remember which city you are in or what the employment situation is generally there.

He got offered one job that paid next to nothing compared to what he was making before.

Ebay is good for selling the junk you don't want any more. I'm thinking about selling my old Atari and Nintendo game consuls along with associated games which has been in a box for 15 years. I've also got a bunch of old AD&D books which have been in a box for about the same amount of time. Then there's my collection of fantasy books which are probably in the same book as the AD&D stuff.

I think I'll hold on to my Star Wars, Transformers, and G.I. Joe toys though.

That's the current list of Federal jobs paying $30k or over in Jacksonville County Florida. There aren't to many but maybe the wroker's compensation examiner might be up your alley. Look for state and local government jobs as once you get hired you can be like Alexander's Horse and post on poly from work.

Edit: There's also a CUSTODIAL WORKER job that pays $9.50 per hour which isn't great but it has benifits and it gets your foot in the door. Once you're a Federal Employee you get first dibs on any new Federal jobs so it should be easy to move up.

Tired of ads?

I'm trying to figure out what I own that anyone would want, actually. I should probably rip all my cds and sell those. Got a few older computer books, some rocks, various toys, AD&D crap I'll probably never use again , etc. At least it would clear stuff out. I'm keeping my Darth Sideous with glowing hand and alternate universe Lt. Uhura.

No Japh, no offers yet. I do have a possible business relationship with a media firm who needs a web designer. Won't know for another week or so. Even then, that won't put money in my pocket right away. But as long as it wards off homelessness, it's a good thing.

You are flat out wrong. That is not the point. Only the state can effectively meet welfare needs because leaving it to private contributions creates a collective action problem - most people would prefer it if others weren't living in misery, but they are quite happy for someone else to pay for it - hence hardly anyone does.

As usual the political right are completely out to lunch on how to solve an obvious social problem.

Make student loans easily accessible and subsidize education -- especially for students with family or dependents -- and let them become a valuable person in the market.

Welfare cheques solve nothing.

Who's on welfare? I'm on unemployment. Last time I tried to get the government to pay for me to be retrained they said it wasn't feasable. They only pay for programs which result in degrees or certificates, and none of those are less than six months, assuming I want to continue to work with computers.

Unemployment is good and should be supported by the government.

But they should also do everything to help you learn what you want to learn to get a better job. It's in the country's interest, and yours.

I'm really at a point now in my life, I'm just not sure what I'm good at. I guess I'm good at nothing. I thought I would be better at the job I'm currently working. I'm just not the type of person who enjoys being near the bottom in terms of work skills. I like being #1.

Oh no, there's still a demand, just not in Jax. I've sent out thirteen resumes in the last two hours, and I'm still going. It's this whole employers wanting local candidates thing that's killing me, plus living in the South, where people are assumed to be not as good as a Yankee with the same skills (but I AM A YANKEE!!!).

With the sort of economy that most advanced nations enjoy, full employment is not possible. Ask an economist. Thus we have to find some way to deal with the unemployed. Telling them to go get a job is no solution as that will largely translate into them putting someone else out of work.

Experience suggests that it is simply not possible to keep everyone in work on a living wage. That's just a fact.

Your other suggestions are laudable for other reasons, but they do not address the basic problem of unemployment.

Welfare checks solve an obvious problem - they keep people who cannot find work with food and shelter.

That's what employment insurance is for, Aggie dear.

If you are consistently unable to find steady work and end up in welfare, at that point something is seriously wrong...and the welfare system does nothing to solve the problem.

LOL, well, looks like you are stuck with an outdated idea of what Welfare is. Sure, the initial welfare system *did* have its problems, and almost no one advocates it now.

That doesn't mean, however, that certain people can't work and that certain people can't be retrained. They have to be handled somehow.

As for education, *yes* it does need to be paid for more by the government, but few Republicans advocate it. Bush's plan on education is largely flawed, for instance (such as No Child Left Behind), but he doesn't want to fix it. I would also add, that the "out of touch" Left has always advocate the Government helping people get educated.

Some other people have already poked some holes in your other assumptions about a modern Nation.

Do not that anyone that anything the left has ever advocated that you disagree with is something that everyone on the left advocates. Do not assume that everything you advocate the Left does not.

That last line about the "left" was obviously just a parody of Agathon's ridiculous comment (or I thought it was obvious, anyway).

And I've no idea why you brought up Republicans. Do you think I'm Republican?

I merely think that handing money out to people consistently unemployed is not a solution. And it is not a solution.
