Chapter 5 - Rats
Captain Ramsey invited all senior staff to attend the meeting in the conference room.
“I will not allow this situation to continue. These murders must stop! That’s why I have decided to place Lieutenant Bobby “Mad Dog” Dougherty in charge of the investigation. He has extraordinary powers to perform whatever action he deems required, effective immediately.”
“Even search our quarters without probable cause”, Officer Dauphin asked.
“Yes”, replied the Captain. “That was precisely my aim.”
Captain paused a little and then continued.
“Now to the second order of business. Everybody report to your battle stations. We’re firing nukes at Russkie bases in exactly one hour. Lieutenant Zimmer, I’m gonna need you on the bridge, so I’m promoting Seaman Grattam to Petty Officer First Class and I’m placing him in charge of comm. See that he gets my orders.”
“Yes Sir”, Lt. Zimmer acknowledged.
“Any questions gentlemen?”
Captain Ramsey waited a few seconds and dismissed the officers.
*******
Exercising his new powers, Lt. Dougherty started to search the quarters of most of the crew members, officers excluded. During a routine examination of Chief Hunsicker’s cabin, he discovered his diary, which Chief has kept together with his personal log. Apparently, the chief was obsessed with documenting every last detail of his everyday life.
Searching through the diary, Lt. Dougherty discovered the following passage:
Sad the old doc has to die so soon
Sad he could not fly away
But this is a submarine story
Not that of an air craft carrier anyway
Lt. Dougherty confronted Chief Hunsicker with this piece of evidence.
“What is this?”
“What?”
Chief Hunsicker read the passage. He looked surprised.
“I didn’t write this. Someone else wrote it into my diary. Hell, it’s not even my handwriting.”
“You expect me to believe someone broke into your cabin and planted evidence on you?”
“As the matter of fact, someone did break into my cabin earlier this morning. He probably used a pipe of some kind. It wasn’t easy, you know. Not something anybody could do.”
“OK, let’s assume someone did break in. Where are the signs of that? The lock seems ok to me.”
“That’s cause I patched it up.”
“And you didn’t report the incident?”
“No, cause I didn’t want to amplify my small problem I was able to solve on my own in view of bigger issues like nuking the terrorists and catching the killer.”
“Forgive me for saying this, but your story is as plausible as Ted Bundy’s defence. I’d sooner believe the one-bullet theory. But it’s for the captain to decide.”
And Captain Ramsey decided to torpedo DarkCloud out of the submarine.
*******
“I got to tell you something”, Seaman Sotille was talking with his good buddy Seaman Bennefield.
He appeared very concerned.
“I saw something Benny. I got to tell you or I’ll freak out.”
“What did you see Marty”, Seaman Bennefield asked.
“I saw someone braking into Chief Hunsicker’s cabin.”
“What? Who was it?”
“You are not going to rat on me, are you?
“Are you crazy? Me being a rat? Just tell me what you saw.”
“I’m scared shitless. If I tell you, you’ll be involved.”
“You can’t back down now. You started it. Now finish it by telling me the whole story.”
“I can’t. I’m sorry I can’t. I don’t want you involved. I got to go.”
“What? Wait! Come back and tell me!”
“It’s for your good. I really got to go.”
*******
Half an hour later Petty Officer Danny Rivetty discovered Whoha dead in the latrine. The door was forced in with a pipe found on the crime scene. Seaman Sotille’s throat was cut with his own knife and word RAT was written on the wall in his own blood.
Lt. Dougherty arrived quickly to the murder scene.
“Apparently, Seaman Sotille intended to hide inside one of the cabins of this latrine. He locked the cabin, but that didn’t stop the murderer, who broke the lock with this metal pipe. He then wrestled with Seaman Sotille, managed to take his knife from him, overpowered him and threw him on the ground and then cut his throat. He then wrote RAT on the wall and left.”
“How do you know all this”, Officer Mahoney asked.
“Pure deduction my friend.”
