Chapter 6 – Communications down
All officers and petty officers assembled at the bridge. Captain Ramsey was just about to start the firing sequence. But before that he addressed the pressing issue, the murderer aboard Alabama.
“Officer Mahoney has come up with an idea of how to identify the killer. We know he has AB negative blood. We are going to ask the naval command to search through the copies of personal files of everyone aboard Alabama and find the one with AB negative blood type. Then they are going to signal us who he is.”
Captain Ramsey continued about the firing of the nukes.
“I expect full contribution and total commitment from everyone on this submarine. We are going to start the firing sequence now. There can be no space for errors now. Battlestations everyone!”
And the officers and petty officers who had no place there left the bridge to get to their battlestations.
Lieutenant Ince went to the nuclear missiles launching room. He signalled his arrival there.
Captain Ramsey turned to Lt. Zimmer, his XO.
“Lieutenant, place your key inside the safety lock!”
“Yes Sir!”
Lieutenant Zimmer put his key in the lock. Then Captain Ramsey and Lieutenant Zimmer simultaneously turned the keys. Captain Ramsey ordered the commencement of the firing countdown. Lt. Ince pushed the button and the countdown began.
At that moment Petty Officer First Class Grattam shouted from the Comm. Room.
“Attention everybody, attention everybody, we have an Emergency Action Message here!”
“Print the message and bring it to the bridge fast”, commanded Lt. Zimmer.
Petty Officer Grattam printed and brought the message to the bridge. Lt. Zimmer took a look at the message and said: “Captain, we have got to stop the countdown. This is a cancellation message.”
“Let me see”, replied the Captain.
The message had a proper header, but it consisted of only one partial sentence:
The order to launch nuclear missiles at the designated targets is hereby
“This can be anything. I’m not stopping the countdown for this”, said the Captain.
“But you must”, Lt. Zimmer insisted.
Captain Ramsey ignored his protests, so Lt. Zimmer had to take his key out of the lock thus stopping the countdown. Captain Ramsey became enraged.
“What have you done? You have disobeyed my order. You are going to suffer for this insolence.”
“You had no right to issue such order, Captain”, replied Lt. Zimmer. “The message we received could be a cancellation message and we are obliged to stop the firing sequence and ask the command to resend the message.”
“Who are you to teach me how to run my submarine?”
“He is right Sir”, Chief of the Boat intervened. “We must try to receive the full message before proceeding.”
“Listen now, while we’re arguing here over some partial message that might have been sent by our enemies, the Russkies are firing their nukes unimpeded. But all right. To cut this story short, I’m willing to agree with your suggestion to double check this so called message with our command. Zimmer, Grattam, Westergard, follow me to the comm. room!”
When they arrived to the communications room they found the equipment severely damaged. No message could be sent or received right now.
“You did this Grattam! You sabotaged the comm.”, Captain Ramsey went mad. “Mahoney! Where is Mahoney? Has anyone seen him?”
“It’s St. Patrick’s Day today”, replied Lt. Zimmer.
“Ah, yes. All right then, MPs, take Petty Officer Grattam away and get rid of him. Send him down the tube. Let him learn first hand what it means to be under the sea.”
And so, Kassiopeia was torpedoed out of the submarine.
Shortly afterward Lt. Daugherty discovered Hercules in his quarters. He was lying dead on the floor, his throat cut with a small pocket knife found on the table next to two cups of Irish tea.
