Erwan is one of those legends like Nemo that are now hard to find, having left an awesome body of work.

I am sure he is on this site somewhere, not sure if his mail or PM is working, though...

Actually, I don't think he ever was a member here. I think it was me who "discovered" him (it must've been in 1999) when I found his website once, with his units and other non-civ2 artwork on it, and I posted about it on here.

He probably had contact with plenty of people by e-mail after that, but then somewhere in 2001 (according to the wayback machine), his site disappeared.

...

Holy crap!! I think I just found his new site. I typed Antark (one of the fictional worlds he made drawings for) and Erwan into Google and this is what it came up with:
http://elexdaan.free.fr

It no longer has any Civ2 on it, and it's just in French, but I'm pretty sure it's him. There's an e-mail address on it too.

(edit: of course, that could be defunct now as well too, I don't know how old this newer site is)

Thanks for the info Mercator.

I'll mail him straight away. If this really is "the Erwan" it would be excellent news because he's one of the few old Civ2 greats I haven't been able to contact yet.

Hope this email is still active...

The email adress gives a delivery error

But I do have more clues about Erwan now...he's (still?) studying arts at UNIVERSITÉ RENNES.

BTW. check out some of his comic artwork on the site, very good. No wonder the guy was so good at unit making that early on, he's a natural.

Harlan I contacted a long time (2 years) ago about using his LotR work for Freeciv. It was a bit of luck because on some occasions he checks his old email accounts.

I regret not asking Harlan's new email adres now.

I'll try and find some way to contact Erwan (and Harlan while I'm at it).

So who do we have left of the old guard?

well there used to be this 'tribute to Mr Temba' site kept by one of his fans who managed to keep in contact with him somehow. It had all his scenarios collected in one place. I haven't been there is two years so I don't kow if its still around.

I don't think he is, if my French is any good. He graduated and is now working on a comic, I think it says.

Now there's a question... I have no idea. I've only been around looking for Civ2 on the Internet since 1998. In fact, I bought Civ2 in October 1997 along with CiC (I had an illegal copy from a friend for 6 months before that ). So the oldest scenarios I know are those "bestonet" scenarios.

If you have a nice collection of city tiles, please do!

Remember, if's going to be distributed with Freeciv it must be done under the GPL. So you must be sure the authors have given permission for their work to be used.

The vintage "isotrident" tileset looks like this. The Hires is a little better. Big advantage is that you can include city styles in the file. See the next post for details.

And this is the Hires tileset. The great thing is you can simply make this file longer and add more city styles at the end. Line-by-line. The style a nation uses is defined in the nation's ruleset. In principal each and every nation can have its own city style. Although it's easier to have a few generic ones.

Bought it the moment it came out. Way back in April '96. I still have the receipt

Even back then those "bestonet" weren't so good. In fact most of them weren't the "best" at all. The only decent one I remember was a fanmade WW2 Pacific scenario "East, Wind, Rain". No extra units or such but I played that to my hearts content because you could also try the Dutch.

Got spare money?

Ok we're nearing the tophalf. From now on I could use some helping hands or/and critique on what units should be included. The point is to make a clear and consistent tileset for an average player or one that is new to civ in general. Meaning that you would recognize a unit instantly and be pleasing to the eye.

Back to the units...

First up, my explorer. I'll probably choose the penguin for the "positive units" (trade, explore etc...) as comic relief (this is an open source game after all ). So Tux would appear on a camel, as an explorer and as a mascot on the truck.

This will also be my last Tux related character for this tileset. No more penguin jokes.

Nice, nice, just a few minor spots now:

The lettering on the side of the truck ought to be isometricized.
Some units need shadow
Is there a semi-isometric or full iso APC unit?

Shadows, got it.

I've tried making the letters isometric but then the quality of the lettering tends to suffer. At this resolution it's almost impossible to make them look decent.

Just try and imagine the letters are printed slightly tilted

Hi, I think have here mistake between HiRes from Tim F. Smith and R-Hires from Frederic Rodrigo.
Do you think it's still the time to pixel art ? Now it's time of SVG multi-resolution tiles set like Freeciv Worms! (http://www.msg.com.mx/~arturo/Projects/Freeciv-Worms/) or http://f.rodrigo.free.fr/art/freeciv/freeciv2.php

Also, check out these screenshots for a new tileset in works by yautja . It's made completely in blender and can be rendered at whatever size wanted.

Normal size

128x64
(note that the transitions between the tiles on this one is a resize of the smaller ones, they need to be re-rendered to look decent).

I think SVG and pixel art both have a place. In fact, I've been helping out Arturo with his worms tileset.

SVG offer a certain styles and abilities (like scaling) that you don't find with pixel art but the advantage of pixel art is that it's easier to draw and give graphics "character". It is amazing how a few pixels suddenly give you that "Yes! That's it!"-moment.

As for scaling, you can do that with pixel art as well. As long as you scale it in 2x, 3x etc... In fact it also gives you a chance to touch them up. Here's an example I made earlier:
