I prefer 96x72 plus. I think it would be good to use the additional space to make the houses a bit larger. Now they are far to tiny imo, allowing for very little detail.

I don't think the city graphics should be quite so much "head-on". They should be a little more isomtric in perspective. Playing with the ones that are already in freim96 I found it a bit odd. But, I suppose this is something you have to play around with to find the "optimal" perspective.

The are two main streams in City designs : The classic Civ2 frontal (head-on) perspective design and the true isometric design, like the cities done by Captain Nemo. Bebro's city designs, which I may use as a base, are classic designs.
Both designs have pro's and cons. True isometric has the advantage of fitting in with the landscape while the classic design is headon but with a good design makes it easier to add more intricate details. This can be done in isometric as well but now you have to keep things in perspective, literally. Instead, perspective is done here by adding roads, shadows and creating depth with smaller buildings.
Is one better than the other? It depends, true isometric cities fit in with isometric tiles while the classic design allow more freedom for aesthetics. What should a city represent? Should it stand out or form a part of the landscape in the game?

Nice job on the Polynesian cities. Hoping to see what Smiley conjures up as well.

Impressive designs designs Smiley! I can't wait to see the final results!
As for the city style ( isometric or head-on) my initial choice was based on Bebro's cities which were done in that style. So I planned do complete a set (4-7 cities, ancient, roman, european, industrial, asian, polynesian, alternative modern) in the headon style first.
Only after the head-on style is finished I was planning to take a look at isometric. Still, even I am caught by the isometeric bug as you can see from the first polynesian city design.. (so that's one down in isometric
So, If we can a make a full set of city styles, there really is no reason for not including isometric in the tileset as well. And seeing Smiley's designs I say: "go for it".

Well, the head-on set is almost finished (i will take a 2nd look at first citydesigns though) and I do have some ideas for isometric. I could finish the head-on set while Smiley' works at the isometric cities and help with the remaining the designs.
In the meantime I will try to complete the head-on set. I'll probably redo the modern city i did first and I'm still in need of an alternative modern city.
Smiley, you created some nice modern city designs in the past. Is it okay if i redo those in 96x72? |
Ok, if you're willing to work on both styles thats cool
I can include both styles in the tileset and include instructions of how to change between them. Maybe there could be added an option in-game to change between them also, although I don't know how hard that is to addm and if it is desirable. I can talk to jdorje about it.
