College Football: Championship Weekend! Support Apolyton, buy Civilization 2

Hey, hey... time for the conference championships... and other assorted games that have a bearing on the BCS.

#1 USC faces off against their rival UCLA in the last game of the year. Should be a cakewalk, but you never know in rivalries... ok, ok... we do know .

#2 Oklahoma takes on Colorado in the Big XII Championship Game. Auburn faithful are hoping for a repeat of the 1998 Big XII Title Game where undefeated and #3 ranked Kansas State lost to an unranked Texas A&M BIG. Probably won't happen though... albeit, Oklahoma lost this game last year as well getting pummeled by K-State.

#3 Auburn faces Tennessee in the SEC Championship Game. Auburn plays against a 3rd string QB against a team they walloped earlier this year. Auburn will probably win big.

Undefeated 1, 2, 3? Yeah, that's my prediction.. and the BCS gets pummeled again.

The other big game is Miami vs. Virginia Tech for the ACC crown. Interestingly, the two Big East teams which jumped ship get to play for the title of ACC Champion in their first year in their new conference. (imagine the Big East this year WITH these two). Should be the best game of the day.

OH, and latest reports say that Urban Meyer is going to FLORIDA, spurning Notre Dame's offer. They may even announce it today.

That game will determine if Cal gets a good bowl game, or some token "you almost had a good year" bowl game like the freedom bowl

You mean if Cal just wins as compared to if Cal wins big? I've heard grumblings that even if Texas passes Cal in the BCS, the Rose Bowl may suck screw it and pick their Pac-10 qualifier, which is Cal, to play Michigan.

That would be a major breach of contract and could be quite costly. Texas would sue for the difference in bowl money plus punitive and they would get it. I doubt the Rose Bowl would take such a risk.

Actually, it would depend on what determined 'at large' according to the BCS. I don't think the Rose would be seriously considering it if there was a way to weasel out of picking Texas.

Though it would be interesting if it was litigated up to a breach of contract. That would mean that after the Rose paid up, it would be totally free of the BCS contract .

Oh, and as a general rule, punitive damages are NOT allowed in contract cases, unless fraud or a tort involved.

Suffering from ads?

In the American system, attorney costs are usually not paid by the loser. Court costs (like administration and judge's time) may be, but those aren't that large.

I was involved in a civil suit (by jury and not judge) where the jury decided the case was so spurious that they dismissed the case and made the suer pay court costs and the attorney costs (including expert witnesses like myself) of the winner.

Well sometimes when the case is frivilous a judge may let that happen, but the general rule is not loser pays in the US. In 99% of cases, the loser does not pay the winner's attorney's costs.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

I think the BCS 'at large' rules are pretty clear. If Texas goes to #4 and Cal drops to #5, the Rose Bowl would be in clear violation if they chose Cal anyway. The violation would be so blatant that I could easily see a judge allow attorney and court costs.

I seriously doubt it. It's very very rare to assign attorney costs to the losing side. I'm sure that in the breach they would not. According to the law and economics view in vogue these days, people should be free to break contracts if they can get a better deal, they just have to pay what is due.

What are the chances a judge would allow attorney costs? 0%, perhaps 0.1%.

It'd be a suit in diversity jurisdiction. The Pac-10 would remove to Federal Court, which would be much less likely to kowtow to local anger. Even Texas state court judges wouldn't be so dumb as to assign attorney's costs to the losing party. It's just not a part of our system. It hardly ever comes into play and it wouldn't in any of this.

Just forget about it, it wouldn't happen.

3rd string quarterback who was SEC offensive player of the week last week...been quarterbacking in the SEC since 2001.

I think that Auburn brings to much to the table for the Vols to overcome, but I think the game will be closer than most.

Got spare money?

Yeah Urban Meyer appears to be jumping ship, I can't blame him really, although I wish he'd stay for another year or two.

Now what will Utah do for a coach?

p.s. He said he would coach the Utes in their bowl game, but I think Utah loses to whoever they play now.

ACK!

the auburn-TN game just looks bad. will it change the BCS if Auburn goes and wins something like 70-0 instead of just plain old winning?
