We should set up some Warrior sentries in the south just to be sure. Words aren't worth much in this world, after all.

I don't disagree, although we don't have a lot of spare units at the moment. Perhaps it is time to recall our explorers.

By the way, the Lost Boys have offered us Code of Laws to secure our new friendship

I have also contacted Babylon (to whom we owe a tech for Polytheism), suggesting that we would like to become long term friends.

Draw up a formal treaty, and ask them to aknowledge it.

Andydog was likely filling our roving reporter's head with mis-information, he's a sly one that andydog.. IF the lostboys are in league with them, at least with have a good road network and mobile troops. We should consider roading tiles that shorten the journey north-south further, and possibly invest in city walls & a few catapults.

In fact, I am in favour of a massive investment in catapults.

Catapults are wonderful things but we need a couple of defensive units in each city before we start building them.

I'm no great user of Cats, largely because I prefer the mobility of Horses and they are incompatible to a large extent.

But since we will be switching our production to Immortals as our offensive force, I am in favour of Moonbars' suggestion. A Cat with every offensive Immortal will surely be an almost impregnable stack!

I have sent the following messge to Paddy of the BOH:

Oh Great and Powerful Khan

The peasants of the Desolation Row rejoice whenever they hear news trickling into our lands of your military victories over the pork-eaters.

Our people grow even more joyful when they think in anticipation of the grand friendship that their leaders are forging with the Great Khan, whose majestic reputation has spread all over the land.

We humbly ask whether you and your Council are in favour of establishing long-term friendly relations with the Desolation Row. We truly hope that this is your desire, and we have set our scribes to drafting a formal treaty of co-operation.

I'm not sure we need a formal treaty with Babylon at this stage. They are too far away to be much of a threat, or a help.

I've been in protracted discussions via telephone and MSN with the Great Khan Paddy of the Bloody Oath Horde today.

He has told me to expect an approach from their Ambassador Plato, to forge a treaty of sorts. Probably a 10 or 20 turn non-aggression pact, together with some tech trading. He said they are having great internal difficulties (being 15 team members) coming to an agreement on dealing with us, and they have regular long Council meetings. Apparently our recent disdainful dismissal of Euphorican forces has spooked pretty much everyone else on the continent, and they are all worried about us, particularly since they all know we have just connected our Iron

Paddy claims to have Literature, Map Making and a deal for Currency already in the bag, and wants us to switch to Republic immediately in return for them giving us Literature, Currency and Map Making (which we have already tied up from AM).

They are now researching Construction.

Any objections to agreeing to this deal? I think it is important to get them onside as allies.

And another thing....he hinted very strongly that they have plans of their own against Euphoricans. Not because of our war with them, but because of their relative proximities to each other.

I say we agree to this deal although I don't like the turn limit on the non-agression pact. We don't know how long it will take us to defeat the Euphoricans. Probably more than 20 turns.

Tired of ads?

Paddy made it clear it was an informal chat and that he was speaking without authority, so until we have an official approach from Plato and write up the treaty, there is no deal as such.

Of course, we can negotiate our own terms into the treaty too.

Sounds to me like we can count the BoH as friends then. This may have the result of causing the other teams to line themselves up against us.. Perhaps the treaty with BoH should be secret? and perhaps we should tie Lost Boys to a treaty before we make the deal with the BoH, in case the LBs decide against peace with us based on that.

Greetings Lord Aqua,

The Great Khan of the Blood Oath Horde has assigned me the duties of
Special Envoy to the Great People of Desolation Row. We have received
your offers of friendship and co-operation and are receptive to the idea
of discussing such things. I would like to schedule a time where we
can get together for a chat to explore these matters. I am currently at
GMT -5 and am usually available from GMT 2330 to GMT 0400. If this
time is inconvienient, then I am sure that we can arrange a mutually
satisfactory time.

We look forward to building a strong relationship with you and your

attend the summit and try and get a good deal.. tech trading, non-agg-pact (nap) and see if u can get them to make it never-ending, rather than time limited, with a notice period if either team wants to cancel it of let's say 20 turns?

I have sent a message to Plato of the Horde, asking for (as per Moonbars' suggestion) an indefinite non-aggression pact, requiring 20 turns advance notice of cancellation.

I've also asked for tech cooperation and suggested we will research Republic if they give us the techs to do so together with Literature.

I've also suggested we keep each other informed of our other diplomatic situations, be they wars or alliances.

Let's see how they respond.

Meanwhile, 1889 (Lost Boys) has come back with the following message after we offered him Map Making:

The war seems to go well for you. Renaming units is extraordinarily clever. Knowledge is such an underestimated asset, I'm glad you appreciate its value. I've offered Law and 10 gold for Maps, so that your knowledge may expand while your opponents study the sharp end of your swords. An embassy has been established between our outcast nations. I have decided to study Republic, shall we cooperate on this as well?

Lord Nosferatu of Transylvania

We now have a choice for cooperation on Republic - BOH or Lost Boys.

Put an end to popups!

Interesting, if cautious, response from Plato:

Greetings Lord Aqua,

The Council of the Horde was most pleased to receive your offer of
friendship and co-operation. Please note, with no disrespect to the Great
People of Desolation Row, that the Horde Council cherishes
independence. While we have no specific objection to being involved in a treaty
with Desolation Row, we feel that we need to gather a bit more
information on your offer.

First and foremost, please let your council know that we have no
aggressive movements or plans against your nation at this time. We are very
pleased that your people feel this way as well. There is currently no
need for a formal treaty in this regard, but we do not reject it out of
hand. We would like more information on why you feel this is needed as
our nations have already enjoyed over 2000 years of peace.

Secondly, it is unclear on whether or not you are asking us to provide
Currency, Code of Laws, and Literature prior to you researching
Republic. As the value of these three techs far exceed that of Republic, we
are asking you to clarify this point.

The Horde would like to suggest that perhaps you continue your currency
research so that a trade of that technology may be discussed.

Finally, the offer to reveal all matters of your foreign policy to us
intrigues the Great Council immensely. Perhaps you could also supply
details on your vision as to how this would be implemented?

It is truly a Grand Alliance that you propose. Such items as this tend
to go against the thinking of the Horde as we are not, in general,
desiring to entangle ourselves in alliances. However, I would be pleased
to present your clarifications to The Great Council for them to
consider.

PLATO
Special Envoy of The Khan

The Republic deal is almost a non-event now - we finish Currency in 3 turns, and have done a deal with Lost Boys for Code of Laws. They will have to agree to give us Construction and Literature if we are to research Republic. Also, an interesting comment about Currency - Paddy had previously told me they already had a deal to acquire Currency.

AM has asked why we didn't give them Currency as agreed, since they gave us Map Making in advance. I replied that Currency is worth 33% more than MM and they should top it up with some case, and that they are not permitted to trade Currency with anyone else (we're the only ones who have it).

Is this a bit too devious and harsh, fellow Council members?

Remember, our long term interests lie with BOH, the sworn enemy of AM.

I got tired of waiting for Babylon to respond to our proposal. This is what I sent them:

Great Lords Beta and Kloreep of Babylon

After many months of trying to forge a deal with Babylon, it has become patently clear through your lack of response that you either have no intention of entering a tech trading alliance with Desolation Row and the Lost Boys, or you have evil intentions against our noble civilisation.

Speak now and unveil your intentions, or tell me to stop wasting my words on you in the vain hope of a partnership between our civilisations.

Aqualung the Desolator

And their response:

Dearest Aqua of Desolation Land.

Our apologies for not responding. Please do not read too much into it. It takes our team ages to discuss things, and I have busy in an alternate universe.

We would like to engage in further discussions regarding tech trading and co-operation. We can do do this via e-mail or chat. Either works for me.

Please let me know which mode of communication you prefer. If it is e-mail, if you would send an initial proposal, or at least the points for discussion, we could get things underway.

Again, Babylon's apologies for our turtle-like speed on foreign affairs. But, it is a highly cultured turtle!

Cheers ...Beta of Babylon

Meanwhile, 1889 of the Lost Boys is on board. He's just waiting for us to outline a detailed proposal.

I've chatted to Paddy of the Horde, and he is offering Literature + Gold + captured workers for Literature. Sounds like a good deal. Lost Boys are working on Construction, and if we can swing Currency to them, then we enter the Middle Ages keeping Republic to ourselves. This could be an important long term strategic coup.

I'm inclined not to go ahead with a tech-trade alliance deal with the Horde, preferring Lost Boys and Babylon.

Either way, we need to decide quickly.

I also sent this to ormuzd of Angh-Morpork:

Honourable Morporkians,

How goes your war with the dangerous Horde? You seem to have regrouped nicely, and your military strength is clearly improving. We wish you continued good fortune in your struggle.

In these dangerous times, the Council of the Desolation Row would prefer that your troops stayed well away from our territory. There is a war going on and we would not wish your men to be caught in crossfire. Neither would we like to be held responsible for casualties should your men get in the way of our military supply lines.

We therefore request that you promptly remove both Grog and Cohen from the warzone.

Aqualung the Desolator.

His response:

Hello, Aqua, Leader of Desolation Row,

Our intentions were exactly the same and thus we planned to move our Grog along the hills and then pass on the western side of your territories without interfering the war between you and Euphorica.

As for Cohen - once he completes the explorations of the continent near the shores he will disappear from your sight.

You should be really not concerned about those two warriors who can't harm your great immortals. Their only purpose is to explore the continent.

Regards,
Ormuzd, a member of Ankh-Morpork team

I had a long MSN chat with Paddy of the Horde last night, wherein he claimed that the Lost Boys are very conniving and an experienced bunch of demogame players, and that we shouldn't be drawn in to their claims that they have only one active player, 1889. He believes they are trying to deflect attention away from themselves so they can be left in peace to continue their REX. While I am not so sure about this, I do agree that they have been REXing wildly and will probably soon expand towards us.

Meanwhile, Paddy expressed interest in allying with us, and suggested a joint military action against Euphorica may be on the cards. I declined to commit, saying I would seek advice from the Council of Desolators.

Meanwhile, Paddy has now just posted this message in the battle reports thread:

Desolator Dave and his wandering ways...

After many interactions between Desolator Dave and various units of the Horde Red Guard, actions that date back many a turn, the Horde Security Council sent for instructions to the Red Guard "Terminate that ****** with extreme prejudice!"

Orders were dispatched to the Lord Soothsayers Own Regiment, currently on maneouvres in the Horde's Northern Battle Training Grounds.

thus:
Soothsayer's Savages (horseman 4/5) - attacks Dave (Desolator warrior 3/3)
Dave (Desolator warrior) dismissed.

Based on this unprovoked heinous crime, I suggest we break all ties with the Horde and strengthen our bonds with Babylon and Angh-Morpork immediately. The jury is still out on the Lost Boys.

Reactions, please!
