See... it was smart biz. Like signing Freddy Adu.

Yeah, but what fun is it in getting a world beater? I quite like Rasmussen and Downing... now if I could just sell Robert (who is now at the reserves).

I'm quite found of Ramussen... and Downing has had some great crosses for me this season.

When Shearer leaves, I have Claudio Lopez coming in. I've made Shearer a player/coach until he retires and I'm trying to persuade him to come back (this is 2006, btw).

What's this other football manager game that's less arcade action and more management? Alternatively could you set CM to play itself?

Theres no football manager game more management than Football Manager AFAIK. There is the Champ Manager series that carried on after Sports Interactive left, but its not half as good as FM ive heard, and I wouldnt try it anyway, its basically now a cheap knock off since SI took the database with them to make FM.

I know you could go on holiday as manager and the game would play on, with your assistant managing the team with various levels of control. Also if you get fired or retire the game carries on playing by itself if you dont apply for a new job.

Hm, is this the game that you need to play the matches in arcade game like fashion, or is this the one where you sit and watch?

It's pretty bad. I've resolved not to buy FM2005.

The last time I had a copy of Championship Manager I played 12 seasons as Fulham and didn't eat, sleep or work properly.

Whew... had to shut down my FM 2005 game for the night. I just destroyed ManU in a Champions League Quarter Final (7-3 on aggregate). I KNOW I can't match that (in between, I tied West Brom 1-1 in an EPL match). So instead of getting all pissed at not being able to replacate... tomorrow I'll start again .

Do you get attached to certain players?

I kept James Flood, a lower division striker in my Fulham squad for years until he retired even though he was pretty hopeless in the P (after having been dynamite in my promotion campaigns).. He stayed happy though.

But I was rewarded, about a year before he retired, Fulham reached the UEFA cup final and injuries meant he was a sub. I was a goal down, we were playing hopelessly, and one of my forwards sustained an injury so he came on for the last half an hour.

Two headed goals from him later, we'd won the UEFA Cup - my only trophy at Fulham (we didn't have the money to do better, despite my cleaning up in the transfer market - they kept most of the money I made).

A pity that version didn't have testimonials - I would have given Flood a testimonial.

Yeah, a bit . That's why I can't get Dede. Rasmussen has to be either starter or backup on the left win, dammit!

And, of course, Shearer... who is now a player/coach .

I can't wait for the version where you can accidentally make racist comments/ethnic slurs to the media.

Then it will be just like real football management.

Does the current version of the game include random generation of young players coming up the farm system?

Talking about player loyalty...

In CM 96/97 I had James Lambert who I brought to Chelsea from Reading. I played him at the left side of a back three in 3-5-2. He was young and playing next to Dessailly seemed to pay off, soon he was Chelsea Captain, had great stats and was playing really well and really consistently, then when I was England manager as well and he came straight into the England starting line-up as Captain, from which position he lifted the world cup in 2002.

So much for the plonker who said Olympiakos were a good team.

4-0 now and they're 7-1 down in the tie.

I didn't watch yesterday's match, but it's no surprise to me. Olympiakos is used to flunk away games in international matches. No sweat; as I said, I 'm a Panathinaikos fan, so if my post brought Olympiakos bad luck, then I should do this more often.

This of course doesn't change my opinion that Newcastle was bad in the first leg.

As for Olympiakos, they have only one win in the last 6 matches. That team is old and tired, they have no reliable substitutions and they did no transfers at all this winter. They are still on top of the Championship, just because our team is really mediocre as well. But we are more fresh and we play them in our home in 3 weeks, so we should come out on top at the end. At least our Championship has more suspense than the English Premier League.

But are the players randomly generated youngsters or are they regenerated retired players with random new names? I know there were a lot of people calling for a change to the former.

Randomly generated youngsters. And the generation has been fixed a bit in the last patch, so they are just as good as some retired players.

Haw haw .

And we have an outside chance of getting to the 6th spot in the table. We have a game in hand and are only 6 points shy of Bolton who currently occupy that spot. With the way everyone ahead of us is playing, we may have a shot.

So.. Middlesborough are gone from UEFA after Sporting took care of them. Newcastle as the only English team left in the UEFA tourney, IIRC.

Middlesborough didnt do too badly to say its their first time in europe. Job and Nemeth were awful, Downing was quality again.

Steve Mcclaren as England manager cant come soon enough.

Newcastle are 7/2 favourites for the the Uefa cup, Sporting and Villarreal 4/1. Chelsea 3/1 favourites for the CL, Milan 7/2. Not been a bad year so far for English club football.

Well Boro was also without like 9 players who were injured. That hurts, though they were already down 3-2 before going to Portugal.

Yeah, England has done well this year in Europe. It's surprising, really .
