I find myself becoming bored of computer games. I'm not sure why. Games used to keep me entertained for long periods of time. But lately games only hold my interest for a couple of days. I cancelled my World of Warcraft account today (though it's still active for a couple more weeks). I've lost all joy in gaming.

Get yourself a nice gal and play that new game they're raving about these days, they call it the Kama Sutra. Btw, you can always use my sig as a pick up line We should do a gaming versus sex thread instead. Sex would pwn gaming.

Because Sony's "Computer Entertainment" system posed a threat to MS' empire. What if what Sony promised became a reality, and the PlayStation becomes the center of the home...instead of a Microsoft product.

The Xbox was sold at a substantial loss hardware-wise, and they made money off each game sale (and a lot more off of first-party games like Halo), but still an overall large loss. But that was part of their business plan.

They intend to make money this time around, which is why I think the box will be $399 to start, not $299.

Exclusive - Xbox 360: Downloadable Demos From Day One, Wireless and more
Revealed – massive 'try before you buy' program readied in Redmond.
31st Mar 2005

SPOnG can reveal today that the Xbox 360 will see an unprecedented downloadable demo offering from day one, with Xbox Live being shaped to deliver massive levels of on-demand content.

Microsoft is expected to announce plans for the system at its pre-E3 event in Los Angeles next month, highlighting what was described to SPOnG as way of highlighting “key titles” to users, as well as offering further added value to the groundbreaking Live service.

“It will mean more work for developers,” our source told us, “though it will offer what is essentially hype-free evaluation options to the consumer.”

Microsoft’s decision to include demo software in downloadable form is far from good news for the magazine sector, which to date has seen Official Xbox Magazine sales propped up on the back of the demo discs included on their covers.

This news could also be seen as a shot across the bows of traditional retail, with console gamers being further conditioned to look for gaming kicks online through Live rather than in-store. Currently around half of the price paid for any game goes straight into the retailer's pocket. Offering direct sales to gamers would cut out this expense and may be seen as a way of combatting escalating development costs which will inevitably have to be passed on to the consumer. Some estimates have talked of next-generation software titles hitting £70 or more at retail. Downloadable content would enable Microsoft to offer next-gen gaming without the hefty price tag.

Should the demo program prove successful, it would make sense for Microsoft to offer full game downloads in time, though the viability of this still rests with the as-yet unknown possibility of hard disc inclusion for 360.

However, Xbox lead J Allard recently hinted that the new Xbox may well come in different forms to suit preferences on a per-region basis, saying “I think we need to have a global foundation, and then personalise within region.”

Interestingly, SPOnG has had it confirmed by several senior sources that the Xbox 360 will feature wireless connectivity out of the box. Furthermore, data storage via PC will be featured, though information seen to date makes reference to this being used solely for media storage. However, downloadable Xbox content could, in theory, be stored too, though we should make it clear that the possibility of such content being stored in this way is mere speculation at this point.

It's one of the reasons I'm not on Live right now. I would have to buy a router, a long ethernet cable, hook up my Xbox on my PC, and make sure that cable doesn't make my living room look too fugly... Of course, there are wireless solutions right now, but they're expensive.

I found this on Gamespy:

quote:
The rumors of a touch screen controller weren't addressed, but Iwata did comment that current controllers "may satisfy the hardcore gamers, but they've become too difficult for more casual gamers."

"For the next-generation console, we plan to introduce a friendly user interface so that, for example, a mother who's watching her child playing a game might say, 'Oh, I'd like to try that too,'" Iwata said. "However, user interfaces are devices that can easily be imitated by other companies, so I can't reveal any details right now."

So now they want to expand their core demographics from kids to their mommies?

Everyone else does everything else outside of the Mario and Zelda realm: good RPGs, such as KOTOR: racing games like NFS, Gran Turismo, etc.

Nintendo seems to depend solely on suckering people to buy constant sequels to Zelda or Pokemon; if they have any decent games, I sure don't see any articles about them on my gaming websites.

People grew up, and Nintendo didn't keep pace with them. Now, their market is predominantly focused on teenyboppers and under, whereas Sony and Microsoft both compete in the market that matters: mid-late teenagers on up, since they release a variety of games.

I've heard of Resident Evil, but I do not really connect it to GameCube.; is it a major title for them? It seemed to be more of a Sony game in my mind.

What is Eternal Darkness?

Warioware? I know nothing other than it appears to be connected to Marioverse.

Pikmin? Is this some kind of anime?

Metroid Prime I have heard of. It didn't strike me as a major hit, certainly not like what Xbox scored with Halo and Halo 2.

And to illustrate what I mean, here are the top ten console games for 2004, according to GameSpot and NPD.

1. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2) - 5.1 million
2. Halo 2 (Xbox) - 4.2 million
3. Madden NFL 2005 (PS2) - 3.2 million
4. ESPN NFL 2K5 (PS2) - 1.5 million
5. Need for Speed Underground 2 (PS2) - 1.4 million
6. Pokémon FireRed (with adapter) (GBA) - 1.2 million
7. NBA Live 2005 (PS2) - 1.2 million
8. Spider-Man 2 (PS2) - 1.1 million
9. Halo: Combat Evolved (Xbox) - 1.1 million
10. ESPN NFL 2K5 (Xbox)- 1.0 million

Even Nintendo seems to recognize GameCube is a sinking rock, considering how much they emphasize their handheld sales.

I agree completely. Nintendo's stubbornness bit them in the ass with the N64 and they failed to adapt quickly enough with the GCN and lost crucial third-party developers.

I am hoping at least that they'll be able to turn things around with the Revolution; I've read reports that they've managed to dramatically reduce development costs for it which should hopefully lead to more third-party support.

What kind of online network does Nintendo have, either now or planned? Xbox Live seems to have set the standard for online gaming in the console world; PS2 Online doesn't seem to be anything spectacular, but at least it's there.

I think the ability to play online with ease will be, or should be, a determining factor in who buys what console.

The problem is, everyone's claiming to have dramatically reduced development costs.

Sony's seems to be an outright lie, the Cell will be a beast to develop for.

MS already had the position of "easiest console to develop for" from this generation, and this whole XNA business seems to even take it farther. MS Visual Studio is regarded as the best IDE and debugger in the field, CodeWarrior (what Sony recommends) is horrible in comparison...don't know what IDE Nintendo uses.

Plus MS' game-making API is extremely well documented and many people are extremely well-versed in it already, another huge advantage of the DirectX-based XNA...

It looks like MS will have the "ease of development" thing going for them (their first and primary business was development languages/tools, remember), and Nintendo being 2nd again.

Since most companies will look at the "primary" platform (probably PS2) and perhaps one secondary, it looks like next gen won't be so kind to Nintendo either.

I completely agree, getting this right is crucial to winning the next stage and X-Box looks sound.

I am not a console nut - how does the PS2's online MP compare in functionality and cost?

In an article I read in Game Informer, they said that the old CEO of Nintendo is against internet play because, to paraphrase, "the internet is just a fad" and "gamers don't want to play against gamers online".

The old CEO (can't find my old G.I. issue) is too stuck on everyone sitting together in the living room and playing against e/o rather than online play.

I got a ps2 and an x-box and I've been playing the box for a long time now......playing Star Wars battlegrounds.

(gearing up for Ep 3)......anyway....

Carry on.
