As to the NYTimes, it greatly influenced American public opinion on Stalin prior to the war. While much of Europe was hostile to Stalin, we were the first country to recognize the USSR and began calling Stalin "Uncle Joe." The NYTimes never reported on the harsh conditions in the USSR caused by collectivization, nor the millions killed in the various purges. Instead they reported that Stalin was doing wonders, etc., etc. |
Good old Ned, never lets facts get in his way. The U.S. did not recognize the USSR until the 1930s, many years after many European states already did so. Nor was it the NYT that led the US to recognize the USSR, but the fact that the U.S. came to terms with the fact that the USSR wasn't going to go away anytime soon. By the time we recognized them, they had existed for over 15 years. It's called giving in to reality.
The NYT didn't report on the problems of collectivisation in the USSR because until Kruschev's speech in 1956, no one knew about them. There were only rumors from White emigres, whose anti-Sovietism heavily clouded their reliability.
And the fact is, Stalin was doing wonders in the USSR. He took a 14th Century country and made it the most powerful country in the world, leading the U.S. in science in some areas. He may have been a butcher and a monster, but his reign wasn't entirely bad. Today, there is a strong movement in Russia to rehabilitate the monster.

Vietnam Ye Ye
Dionysios Savopoulos
Translated by paiktis22.
In Vietnam they set the rice on fire, the rice on fire
In Shaigon you can't live
The air is not enough for you to live
Now hidden in the river you breathe
Fo Mi Chin, you breathe
Breathing with a cane, with a cane
Yeah yea yea yea.....
The weather would have been beautiful in the forest, beautiful in the forest
If the leaves didn't go deaf from the noise
If the sun didn't freeze from the road
Hey if the children didn't eat garbage
If the little rain didn't burn the huts
The little rain if it didn't burn the huts
The weather would have been beautiful in the forest
yeah yea yea yea.....
Fo Mi Chin what would you have really done? what would you have done really
If the children didnt eat garbage
If the gentle rain didnt burn down the huts
You would have taken your girl for a promenade, hand in hand
Fo Mi Chin hand in hand
In the forest for a promenade hand in hand
yeah yea yea yea
