But it would actually be cheaper to buy another 1 GB when it's needed rather than now . Which is the reason why most of us don't specifically order 5 GHz machines with 4 GB RAM now for 20 thousand dollars .

Oh, and you can do some programming with far less memory than that . cmd->debug and go .

Actually, yes. Especially when you're running, say, the Sims 2 + some other stuff.

You'd be surprised. I buy a new PC maybe once every 5-6 years, but when I do I buy absolute top-of-the-line (for the consumer market anyway). I find that saves 50% or more compared to buying an average PC every 2-3 year, and the only thing I usually have to upgrade is the graphics card. I could probably save a few more € by waiting a few months/years before installing more memory, but why bother? As Kuci says, you *do* notice the difference with heavy loads. There's no such thing as too much memory...

Did I already brag about my system

Oh, my graphic card is a GForce FX 5200
I'm not sure if that'll be good enough. But maybe I'll buy a new one anyway 2 weeks before cIV has been released and put my current card in my wife's computer.

A FX 5200 will run Civ4. The card is fully capable of handling a 3D engine, after all. Maybe it would be better to turn off, say, shadows, but you can definitely run it as it is.

A better time to upgrade is AFTER you get the game. That way, you see how it runs on your old rig, and can then be excited by the dramatic improvement after your upgrade .

Ahhhhhhhhh. I have a MAC

Anyone have any experience with Civ for Macs? I just switched to Mac this year when I entered med school (mainly because in the back of my head I knew I wouldn't be able to play Civ at school and thus not fail the USMLE's when Civ4 came out) but my lust for Civ4 grows stronger every passing day.

Is there a way to get some Windows thing going on Mac so I could play the game when it comes out, or are there usually generally comparable Mac versions and expansions?

PS I'll give anyone a free lobotomy in about 10 years if you help me out (your choice of region)

In fact, Civ games are typically released for Macs. And that happens much later than the Windows release. Not getting any new games quickly is what you subscribe to when buying a mac .

Tired of ads?

They never released the C3 expansions for Mac. Given that Apple's changing architectures, even, Firaxis might just ditch Macs entirely.

Even if Civ IV for the Mac does come out, you'd probably have to wait several months to get it.

I think that's slightly less likely than the windows executable, through sheer chance, working perfectly on a Mac

Got spare money?

According to news posted on the Civ IV section:

quote:
CivIV`s minimum and recommended system requirements are also revealed officially for the first time. The current min[imum] spec[ification] is a 1 GHz Pentium [III] with 256 MB RAM and a video card that supports hardware T[ransform and] L[ighting (T&L)]. We haven’t really worked out a recommended spec[ification] yet, but I imagine having 512MB of RAM, a P[entium IV], and a recent graphics card... would probably do the trick.

It's not different from the requirements for Pirates, so I guess it is fine - at least for me, considering that Pirates runs well on my system.

Increase the size of your Attachments

For instance, Google up your graphics card and see its specifications. As the news item on our Civ4 section says:
quote:
To determine whether or not one`s video card is T&L enabled, one must first know their card adapter and chip name and then comptently research its capabilities online using a search engine such as Google. To make this initial determination:

1) Right-click on a blank part of the desktop and click `Properties`.
2) From the `Settings` tab of this window, left-click on the `Advanced` button.
3) Click on the `Adapter` tab.
4) Note the name of the adapter type and chip name for researching.
