No, I'm saying that it's pretty flat year over year

Over 5 years the trend is obvious though.

OK. If you ignore the backlash against Iraq, I suppose you can dismiss 2004. What, were all the surveys similarly misreporting a down tick? Or are most of this year's falsely reporting an up tick?

What was that saying? Something about liars, damn liars, and statistics?

Actually, no, since "hate" is an emotion, and thus inherently unreasonable and irrational.

Rationally or logically speaking, most people should not give a damn since say China's treatment of the Tibetans has just as much to do with their lives, or what will matter in their lives, as the US's treatment of people in Guantanamo, ie. NONE.

That of course is different from Ethically speaking, in whcih case you deplore China and castigate the US.

Huh? I'm saying that there is insufficient evidence for an uptick. It falls inside the realm of statistical uncertainty. The bounds of experimental error do not allow us to report any signinficant upward or downward trend over the last year in any except a couple of countries.

I don't know how else to put it.

The coalition has been suffering troop shortages from day one and they will get worse.

But that may not be a bad thing - there is no military solution, either in Iraq or more widely. This is a political/ security/ intelligence/ law enforcement problem. The insurgency in Iraq or Afghanistan or elsewhere has inexhaustible supplies of cannon fodder aka martyrs. This is the central difference between the US and its allies - even on the ground in Iraq the allies treat the problem in a very different way.

The sooner the US is weaned off seeing terrorism as a "war" to be fought with troops, the better.

The best if imperfect example is Palestine where progress is being made through political means.

Everybody needs something to live for.

True Horsie. We need to impliment the Zkribbler Exit Formula:

Troops(needed) = Troops(trained Iraqi) + troops(Coalition)

Therefore as the number of trained Iraqis increases, the same number of coalition troops can be pulled out.

As I recall, the Aussies were awesome in Vietnam...except for that little incident where the country ran out of Fosters, and the military tried to foist American beer off on them.

These nine rules were handed out to all Australian soldiers in Vietnam

NINE RULES

1. Remember we are here only to help; we make no demands and seek no special treatment.

2. Try to understand the people, their way of life, customs and laws.

3. Learn the simple greetings of the Vietnamese language and use them frequently.

4. Treat friendly people, particularly women with respect and courtesy.

5. Don't attract attention by rude behaviour or larrikinism.

6. Avoid separating us from the Vietnamese by a display of great wealth or privilege.

7. Make friends amongst the soldiers and people of Vietnam.

8. Remember decency and honesty are the signs of a man and a soldier; bad manners are the sign of a fool.

9. Above all remember you are an Australian, by your actions our country is judged. Set an example of sincerity and fair play in all your dealings with Vietnamese and with other people who are assisting them.
