Do any of our German refugees know how the odds of free settler stack up if we follow your scenario?

Krill's plan looks very nice.

Pop is power, people. Delaying a granery in a swing food city is very short term thinking. We are not going to win this game by playing the start conservatively.

There is no better bang for buck than rapid growth right at the beginning.

Especially when we chose the civ that can do what Krill proposes better, and safer, than any other.

To not play to our strengths would be folly.

Let's hope all the kinks are worked out before the next turn or I predict we'll be playing Civ4 while debating if we should build a granary or not.

We're Sumeria. We have a cheap 10-shield 2-defense unit. That is perfect for "choking," invading someone's territory with them and pillaging, denying resources, etc. It doesn't require nearly as much effort as an invasion, and the civ facing the choke must devote resources to Archers and/or swordsmen to be able to overcome it and get on with their own building.

Especially if we have a close neighbor we wish to take out eventually, a choke would be perfect for our civ. Although it would guarantee that early GA.

And it would entirely defeat the strength we may have in MZs department.

If we opt to choke a neighbour, and ignore our own builder strengths, we will be locked into war with no possibility of escape until most of the other civs are so far ahead of us that the rest of the game we are constantly playing from behind.

I strongly urge we play to grow early. War will find us soon enough. Let us be the larger fish so that we may eat the smaller fry.

Here's something that might help. Someone over at CFC figured out the probabilities for huts. He created a spreadsheet (with instrcutions) to calculate: http://www.civfanatics.com/civ3/strategy/goodyhuts.php

When I figured it out, we're bound to get something beneficial, with about 30% chance for a free tech, and 15% for all the other available options.

Nice spreadsheet. One thing to add: if you settle a city directly adjacent to a hut, you'll never get barbarians

If we pop a hut with the following conditions, then these are the chances of recieving each of the following:

Conditions
1. Not have more cities than there are number of total cities divided by number of Civs. (For Settler or City)
2. Not have a military unit. (For No Barbs)
3. Not have a settler in production. (For Settler or City)
4. Must be in Ancient times. (For Tech)

code:
City 14.3% Tech 28.6% Gold 14.3% Settler 14.3% Map 14.3% Warrior 14.3% Barbarians 0.0%

If we have a military unit the chances for Barbarians go to 65% and Tech goes to 10% and the rest go to 5%.

One thing that will increase the chances of getting a settler is to find a hut that is on top of a lux or a resource. Because if you do, and the "roll" determines "gold", the game will re-roll until "gold" does not come up thereby increasing your chances for a settler.

I see a ~30% chance for a city or settler, and ~30% for a tech.

That's good odds (57.2%) of getting something well worth four or even six worker turns.

So there is a 0% chance of nothing? Why does that sound odd?

However, the 28.6% change of a city/settler is greater than I thought.

The free tech would most likely be Cer. Burial. If we were to go this route, would it not be advisable to go with setting our research to 0% on cer burial (because you don't pop a tech you are researching) so the most likely tech would then be W.C.?

That is a good idea, as the gold that we gain we will definately be used to support an extra unit or the granary, no matter what we do.

I will not deny this. I have seen it many times, but as Krill pointed out, it only happens when there are no other techs to get.

as leif already said: thats wrong :P
and it was also not like we had all the other techs that do not need alpha. i am not a 100% sure but i think even CB was not researched yet...

though we wondered about it as we also thought it is impossible to find a tech you are researching at the moment.
perhaps it is c3c-pbem specific

I know this because it has been tested and shown that if a hut is on top of a Luxury or a Resource that it will not give "gold" as a reward. Now, since a hut has to give something, the game re-rolls what happens if in fact the number for "gold" turns up. The game will continue to re-roll in this situation until something comes up that you are eligible for.
