Ignoring that this wave of assassinations more or less died out a century ago, there's a pretty strong distinction between assassinating repressive rulers and randomly bombing subways and trains.

Seems to me random dates in general make more sense - although there's likely some connection to the G8 summit. If you plan everything for some significant date, your attacks become too predictable. On the other hand, there probably isn't a day during the year that you couldn't link somehow to some significant event sometime in history or the present.

Since the bombs where not in direct response to anything that was actually happening, it doesn't really matter when they go off, just as long as it's at a time and place where it will cause speculation and connections can be drawn between it and other events.

In fairness, there was one fairly nasty bombing on Wall Street, that ended up killing lots of ordinary folks - clerks, etc.

But that was 80 years ago. The class basis of modern anarchism is different, the social situation different, and so the tactics are different. This looks to have been AQ, Im 99% sure.

Big questions 1. Was it suicide bombers, planted bombs, or both? 2. Was it A. AQ proper B. An AQ affiliate like Al Tawhid or C. A cell that formed more or less independently 3. Were the direct perps foreigners, or UK citizens/permanent residents?

Well in the case of Spain, they were able to cause enough terror that they swayed the vote in the elections, forcing Spain to pull out of Iraq, and thus achieving what they set out to do.

I don't think that will happen with England.

So I think this one is a battle won, but the war's not over.

Sincerest condolences to our friends in the UK. Yet another city has to experience a terrible, terrible day.

One of my best friend's sister lives in London, and apparently one of the tube bombs went off right next to her building. Fortunately, she is in Monaco at the moment with her bf. But they were planning on returning tomorrow...doubt they'll be able to get back.

Thoughts are with my British friends!

Of course theyve also hit Morocco, Tunisia, Kenya, Indonesia, Pakistan. And affiliated Chechen groups attacked Russia. And affiliated Pakistani groups have hit India. And possibly affiliated groups have hit Thailand.

I think that the fallout from the (then) Spainish governments attempts to link the bombing to ETA in the hope of boosting their electoral support had a far bigger impact on the election result than the actual attacks did.
