Ya we had 500 gallons (IIRC)on our pumpers and the response model was that the first truck went to the fire, pumped its 500 and then laid hose to a water source. The second truck went directly to a water source and laid hose to the fire. Ferrying water was VERY uncommon but then again, this was in newfoundland which has many many many streams, brooks, ponds.

In case you were wondering:

"Our offices have received many phone calls from congregational leaders asking how we can help the victims of Hurricane Katrina and our Conservative synagogues in the affected areas. To help our Conservative movement communities and all the victims of the community, United Synagogue has opened our Hurricane Disaster Relief Fund. We ask Conservative Jews to make a financial contribution that will help our communities affected by the hurricanes.

Our Conservative synagogues are still assessing damage to their buildings and communities. Synagogues in the affected areas that sustain extensive damage that is not covered by insurance may receive money from the fund. Funds for assistance to individual victims will be made from our Hurricane Relief Fund to organizations on the ground that are best able to provide direct assistance.

Credit card donations can be made online at www.uscj.org; just click on the link to the Hurricane Disaster Relief Fund. When you make a credit card donation you must write in the designation box that the donation is for the Hurricane Disaster Relief Fund.

Donations by check can be made payable to "USCJ"; indicate in the memo section that the donation is for the Hurricane Disaster Relief Fund. Checks should be mailed to USCJ Hurricane Disaster Relief Fund; 121 Congressional Lane; Suite 210; Rockville, MD 20852. In order to reduce administrative costs we will not send an acknowledgement of the donation unless required by law or requested by the donor.

Thank you.

Given all the water around, a major fire spreading does seem unlikely-- sorry for the tangent but not beiong able to use standing water made no sense to me.

Drinking water will be a huge issue and some people may try drinking the floodwater out of desperation if trapped with no choice-- Does anyone know if it would be predominantly fresh water? The maps I saw seemed to indicate that NO is mainly bounded by lakes and rivers so the floodwater may seem palatable even if it would make you sick

Lake Pontchartrain is brackish water, so it would be unsuitable for drinking, even if there weren't all sorts of nasty things in the soup...

All the hotels and churches providing assistance are near full in Camden. I think the picture is the same across south AR.

We've housed refugees from hurricanes down south before...just not for this duration of time.

Murphy Oil (in El Dorado) IIRC has a couple Gulf oil rigs and a bigass refinery in Mereaux, LA (I think shortly north of New Orleans). I bet the refinery is junk now, but they have other locations.

So, what happens to the Saints this season?

BTW, Slowwy multiple governments around the world are offering aid to the U.S., including our NATO allies (including France), Venezuela, etc. The U.S. has so far not responded to the offers. Typical BS of this administration, just like after 9/11.

"What's a bar's best defense? To stay open

August 31, 2005
By Dante Ramos
Staff writer
Ms. Mae's Bar has been open around the clock at Napoleon and Magazine streets for 11 years. The bar stayed open during Hurricane Katrina, but owner Mae Brigham decided to shut down Tuesday at 1 a.m.

"Everybody was just worn out," she said.

But Brigham reopened about 9 a.m. later that morning, partly as a defense against looters. The bar is located across from a police station, and Brigham figured looters would be unlikely to attack a busy bar, especially since some of the patrons might be police officers.

By early Tuesday evening, the bar had become the meeting place for residents of surrounding neighborhoods. Patrons sitting outside on the sidewalk watched a National Guard truck pass by with a load of rescuees."

I just saw CBS News! There are tons of people camped out on bridges in New Orleans with hardly any water or any food. There are no rescue vehicles, no helicopters dropping supplys, they have basically been left alone, and they aren't very happy about it. And this isn't some small sheltered community, this is on one of the major highways right across from the SuperDome (but they can't get to the Dome because of the water in between).

Why aren't these people being helped?! This is horrible! Where are the feds?

Still a shame though, I saw the **** witch broke on tv and to be honest it didnt look like much to begin with.

I also heared about the emergency engineers dropping sandbags into the hole witch only makes clear they have absolutely no idea how to handle things. Maybe they see the light soon and just sail a freighter into the hole, looks like the only quick fix.

'Thousands dead' in New Orleans

Elderly woman being helped onto truck

City under siege
Hurricane Katrina is thought to have killed hundreds, probably thousands of people in New Orleans, the city's mayor, Ray Nagin, has said.

Mr Nagin said there were significant numbers of corpses in the waters of the flood-stricken city, while many more people may be dead in their homes.

There would be a total evacuation of the city, he said, warning it could be months before residents could return.

President George W Bush said the area could take years to recover.

Map of central New Orleans

Cutting short a holiday in Texas to take charge of the federal recovery effort, Mr Bush said the government was dealing with one of the worst natural disasters in US history.

"This is going to be a difficult road, the challenges we face on the ground are unprecedented, but there's no doubt in my mind that we'll succeed," he said.

Mr Bush, whose Air Force One plane flew low over the affected area, was taken aback by the scale of the disaster.

Blogging Katrina

"I can't tell you how devastating the sites were," he said.

With conditions still deteriorating, the government has declared a public health emergency along the whole of the Gulf coast, to speed up the delivery of food, water and fuel to the region.

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said 1,700 truckloads of essential supplies were on their way there.

Medical shelters are being set up offering 10,000 beds, while the US military is providing dozens of rescue helicopters and boats.

The Pentagon has ordered 10,000 extra national guardsmen to Louisiana and Mississippi.

Disease problem

Mayor Nagin said he had no choice but to remove the 50,000 to 100,000 people left in the city when the hurricane struck.

Follow Katrina's path

"We have to. The city will not be functional for two to three months," he said.

He said dead bodies in the water would soon create a serious disease problem.

Survivors could be taken out at a rate of up to 15,000 a day.

Counting the dead remains a secondary priority until they are rescued, officials say.

In Mississippi, officials have warned the death toll is likely to climb above the current 110.

Harrison County bore the brunt of Hurricane Katrina as it slammed into Biloxi and Gulfport before heading inland.

Rising water

New Orleans has been plagued by looting, floods and increasingly desperate people, two days after the hurricane.

American Red Cross donations

www.redcross.org
tel (in the US): 1 800 HELP NOW

About a million people evacuated from the area before the hurricane struck, but tens of thousands of others are trapped in the city.

The authorities are planning to evacuate up to 20,000 people from the city's Superdome stadium where sanitary conditions are said to be appalling.

Four people believed to be elderly or infirm died there overnight, according to reports.

Surges of flood water submerged more areas of the city after failed attempts to plug breaches in the barriers which are supposed to protect it.

The search for survivors continues in New Orleans as waters continue to rise

In pictures

The pumps which usually assist are no longer working because of the rising levels.

The BBC's Alastair Leithead in New Orleans says there is panic as vital supplies run out. Heavily armed police have been trying to impose a form of martial law to stem looting.

While some looters are stealing non-essential goods, others are simply trying to find food and water.

Survivors are being found all the time.

In Mississippi, two children who lost their parents were taken to safety. In New Orleans, people are still being winched from roofs.
