Here's the caption of the photo Edan posted earlier; I'm still trying to find the exact location in Google Earth. This one connects the lake to the Mississippi through a series of locks and, as the name suggests, is used for shipping.

Finally!

CNN news finally mentioned the city of Pascagoula, MS. I lived there for a year when I was stationed at the naval base (but the barracks were in the town itself- not on the island the navy base is at). I don't really know anyone there except the guys I was stationed with. I am curious of the condition of the naval base. Anyone have any info? The base was on the base closure list, but it hasn't closed yet. The base is situated on an island with a causeway leading to it. In fact, I was delayed reporting to this duty station, by a hurricane. I arrived just a day and a half after the hurricane passed through.

As normal, navy ships always are put out to sea (if they are capable) during a hurricane. I've deployed a couple of times because of close calls with hurricanes (both false alarms though- but for nuke ships it sometimes takes over a day to get the reactors started up (if they are in a cold/solid state)).

oooh, now they got a guy on highway 90 reporting at the alligator farm. I know that highway well.

This site has some before and after satellite false-color photos. Damn clouds are obscuring NO in the after shot.
http://rapidfire.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/...date=2005%2F239

If you use a tabbed browser, open one of the before shots in one and position it and do the same with and after shot in another. You'll notice the difference...

hmm, okay. CNN just ran an interview with the mayor. But I have a feeling this interview was from yesterday morning. I hate it when the 24 hour news networks report old news.

I'm watching sportscenter for my news now. . I'm curious where the New Orleans Saints are going to play.

I looked at the schedule. They aren't scheduled for a home game until week 3. Sept 18. They are talking about LSU, or possibly San Antonio (where they are practicing right now), or possibly even Houston.

And if anyone cares. Brett Favre's mom is okay. .

Should have stuck with CNN, they just replayed a clip from that press conference talking about getting people out of the Superdome.

how about this idea.

Turn New Orleans into New Venice. Have people move around the city with boats. Keep the city permanently submerged underwater. I'm not sure if you could elevate the skyscrapers though.

CNN is also reporting 635 dead in Iraq because of a stampede. I guess that deserves it's own thread, but I don't feel like making it.

CNN anchors are suggesting they house the people in the superdome on the deck of an aircraft carrier. First of all, it's less than 5 acres. Not enough room to house 30,000 people. Second of all, they would have no shelter. You could make tents and use the tie-downs to anchor the tents I suppose.

and third. Sleeping on non-skid would not be a pleasant experience. .

They are saying a 25 foot wall of water hit the Mississippi coast. I have to believe the navy base is completely destroyed. I wish I could get some news about that.

There are two housing issues, short term and long term. Short term, most of those whove left the area seem to be staying with friends or relatives. Others will have to be accomodated in shelters. Longer term, I read somewhere that FEMA has plans for everything from tent cities to cruise ships. Apparently these plans WERE made in advance, but Im cant vouch for that.

There will be lots of good questions to ask about the performance of various officials, but Id say at this point its somewhat early too judge.

In general its more efficient to let people evacuate themselves - which apparently 80% of the population of NO did. There will of course be questions about whether the state and city made any accomodation for folks without cars, or other resources. If I was an emergency planner in say, Fort Lauderdale, Id certainly want to make sure evacuation plans accommodate such folks. Im not sure the NG would be the best way to do it though.

I have to say that the lack of planning for this hurricane is absolutely tragic. This was an event that was so predictable and so predicted, that the lack of real preparations are criminal. CNN keeps saying that the authorities are "overwhelmed", as if that is an excuse for the lack of an effective disaster plan. The confusion and lack of coordination of the relief agencies is obvious from watching the news coverage.

A day before the hurricane hit , the mayor of New Orleans said "everyone out", but forgot that 1/3 of the population has no car! There is no plan for those folks at all! The rich and middle income people got out, and the poor were left to drown. So they went to the Superdome, which has since become almost uninhabitable and the authorities have no plan to evacuate the people in it.

I watched the Governor of Mississippi lament the failure of many of his citizens to obey the evacuation order. He seems to have no idea that hundreds of thousands of poor people have no vehicle at all! Why was there not a real mobilization of transportation resources of the several states in time to get these people out? And there is no housing plan for the nearly 1 million people that are now homeless.

If this were not so tragic, it would be laughable. What a farce!

1. It's not hundreds of thousands of people who don't have a car. Don't exaggerate. The vast majority of people have a car.

2. They had a 72-hour evacuation plan and this hurricane did unexpected things that shortened the available time.

3. This is a natural disaster of rather immense proportions. It is natural that it will take a couple of days to get a handle on things. Even in the US, where everything normally works.

Just got an interesting insight from a co-worker who went down to NO thursday night and stayed till late saturday.

He said that they didnt bother to look at any TV till late saturday night so as far as they knew the hurricane was still moving westward. It wasnt until late sat night that they noticed the new storm track and when they heard about the evacuation notice decided to leave a little early (that night rather than sun).

I'll bet that a lot of 'revelers' were in the same state of ignorance.

IMO, if there was one thing that went right, it was the evacuation. I think it's amazing that 80% of the city was able to evacuate in like a day and a half with very little problems.

I agree, although I don't know where the 80% figure comes from in actual fact. Seems low.

If there were only 10,000 people who went to the superdome, then it seems likely to me that the city was pretty much empty.

The 80% figure came from the government. All the people that are left are idiots who thought they could rid out the strom, tourists who had no idea a hurricane was coming, and poor people who did not have means to leave.
