Suffering from ads?

Other thread got locked.

Should have remained open IMO because the intent was a) discussing a shortage and b) germaine to a specific locale.

In any event prices be damned. Availability is the real issue.

Though I will omit the words 'reliable' and 'cheap'

I heard gas in Pine Bluff is over $3, and it's going over $3 in Camden tomorrow...

The gas station was super busy. An old lady next to us said her son lives in Atlanta and had to pay $4.99 / gallon...

If prices keep going higher like this, this nation will be in a crisis.

Put an end to popups!

According to people on the university's BBS, it's pretty scattershotted around here today. $3.20 in the south, still $2.59 in the backwoods...I've been working from home all summer, but I'm going to have to start making my 40mi drive to campus every day next week.

Yes I know, and that's why you are so dependant on every household having at least one automobile. The reason is simply that the oil will run out sooner or later, probably with consistently rising prices that will make it too expensive for the average person to drive such great distances in a personal automobile.

Someone mentioned electric cars and that's probably the only method of adaption that would maybe ensure the amount of cars. But how would you go about producing such massive amounts of electricity and would it be cost efficient?

And if we can't adapt then society will have to change, we will have to stop constantly transporting ourselves such vast distances in private vehicles. Maybe certain ways of life that exist now will be impossible in the future.

Personally. My car will be paid off soon. I can afford whatever gas goes up too. Im looking forward to when prices are 4.50 a gallon and all the little moron 17 years old with there frick frackin Honda Civic's tuned up to chug 4 miles per gallon are off the road. Oh ya riding around without mufflers too. Once they are off the road and back in school I will feel much better.

You are complaining about Honda CIVICS getting FOUR miles per gallon?????? What kind of engine did they drop in their Civic because the base Civic is a pretty efficient little car.

Interestingly there have been problems in Calgary and vancouver as the bike trails have gotten more crowded. People are complaining about crowding and excessive speeds and IIRC one cyclist died in a collision with a pedestrian. More people are cycling and the bike trails can't cope. (NOBODY attempts cycling on the big feeder roads)

Cars don't have to rely on oil forever. There is a lot of research being done into hydrogen fuel cell cars. And by the time that oil runs out we may have harnessed the sun (ie, fusion power or cheap, reliable solar energy) and that will provide enough energy to create the fuel cells or electricity for electric car. We aren't simply going to run out of oil and then say "****, what do we do now?". As the price of oil falls due to less supply, other energy sources will rise.

WOW... on CBS news they just showed a gas station in Atlanta with premium gas priced at OVER $6.00 a gallon ($6.07 IIRC). That's European level!

Most around me are around $2.75 a gallon and there are lines for gas... though they say the pipelines may be repaired in the next few days.

Yes I mentioned alternative means of propulsion in my post, the part which you convienently left out.

But that is still dependant on uncertain factors such as "we will probably have the technology then". I hope there is an answer without major drawbacks.

Alot of kids down here take Honda Civics and put Turbo's and Supercharge them to make them sound fast (notice I said 'sound' cause there still slow shitty civic's). They may remove the muffler and may install catback. Most just remove the pipes. Killing there fuel efficiency. To those who dont great.

Edit: They are most commonly referred to as Ricers. And if someone under the age of 22 owns a honda Civic. There is a 90% chance they are a Ricer.

You've never been to the States have you?

I know plenty of people at my workplace who regularly drive over 70 miles (about 113 km) one way to get to work (and back home).

It is far less common for people in Europe to live so far from their workplaces. That's partly because the US is far more rural than Europe in general.

Electricity is really cheap in many places of the US. $0.06 or $0.07 per kwh residential. You can buy a hybrid and plug it in at night to run on electricity for the first 15 miles or so.

(Don't expect that price in California, however.)
