Freeciv for windows needs Civ2MP veteran Beta testers! Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Dear fellow Civ players

As you may know there are quite a few civ related games around in the world. Some of them are commercial and some of them are free (libre). In the free corner we can find civ games like Civ-evo, Clash of Civilizations and of course...Freeciv.

If a casual player raised on various commerical Civ releases he wouldnot be impressed. The graphics and sound (now finally ready to be implemented) are so basic it would scare away a newbie/ ordinary player if even he managed to start it up. However if you're a veteran of Civ who knows rules inside out, a quick glance would not do this game justice. I know, because I've been properly twiddling with it for a year by now.

A game like Freeciv always seems to be a step behind it's commercial counterparts. But that doesn't mean it lags behind, it DOES get better. Freeciv is quite good at some points and it could get better with a well tested windows version. Problem is, there don't seem to be enough Beta testers and programmers for the windows version.

So that's why I decided to do a call on the regulars here. Nearly everyone knows the game by heart and is computer savy enough to try something different while we wait for Civ3MP (maybe christmas? ).

Anyone interested in helping out?

If you want to try out the Beta, go to this link

ftp://ftp.freeciv.org/freeciv/incoming/

Just download the file titled "freeciv-win-cvs.zip" and unzip it in a directory. With this version you can finally start the game from the client instead of setting up the game in the server first. It is a Beta however, so if you find anything strange (crash/odd move?) please report it in this thread. If we find those bugs the Freeciv developers can root them out for us.

P.S
I've already discovered a bug : the windows client startup menu doesn't seem to work properly under Win98. The game starts up but it's closed off at once.
A workaround for this is the normal startup method:

click on the server (server interface appears)
type set aitfill 8 (this will give you 8 players, but you can increase this to 30)
now start the client, fill in your name and join a game (your name should pop up in the server screen)
type start and the game will start

Note: there are countless more options in the server screen just type help to learn about the various commands (saving, loading games, difficulty, netplay etc..) and options (land mass, history log ( a real one yeah!) etc..)

Its a beta alright

The animation is all messed up. When one unit is ontop of a enemy unit. ie in the square above it the enemy unit nearly completely disapears.. Also a lot of the screens are counter player friendly... IE things are pop ups that shouldn't be...

Have you taken a look at the message options in the game menu? You change all the reports from there.

Good news, I've done a little bughunting concerning a crash just after the start and Andreas was able to reproduce the results. Another bug squashed in the windows version.

Check the april 14 win-cvs release here:

Interesting note: Did you know you can setup the game in such a way all players start out with the same tech set? You can set up a universial list with the starting techs, nifty!...

Once again some news on the Freeciv front. SFX now work without a hitch on the Freeciv windows client. You only have to download the soundpack and copy it to the data directory.

Check this thread for details.

Rasputin,

While you're at it, also download civ2gfx You can use it to convert Civ2 unit graphics to the Freeciv format. You can also use your Civ2 SFX in Freeciv, see one of my previous posts in this thread.

Rasputin,

I haven't tried playing FC over a direct IP (yet) but it should work in the same way as with a normal Civ2MP game. Just be sure that players are playing with the same version (1.13) and have selected the same port to play over.
There is a metaserver that can be connected to for finding games over the internet.

Some playing tips:

Server side
Experimenting with the server is worth a try despite the text interface. Just type help and show to get an overview of the settings. There's a slew of settings for the starting positions, too much to explain in one go (plus I don't understand them all ) Some of the most useful are: set gold 0-5000 (starting amount of gold); set techlevel 0-50 (every civ starts with an X number of techs from the techtree); set onsetbarbs -4000 - 5000 (year when barbs appear); set settlers 1-10 (number of settlers every civ starts out with)

Client
For info about a terrain square hold CTRL+left mouse button
Goto is a charm : simply press "g" and a goto line will appear that show the best way and click to let it go off
Road building is a double charm with Shift+c, select a destination and the settler will start building a road towards that point.

Cyber-Spyder,

You can play Freeciv across different platforms. The only thing you should check is what version (1.13 or higher). An old 1.12 client can't connect to a 1.13 server due to some new features (CMA) which you need a 1.13 client for.

Try to play with less civs (4-7) on a smaller map. You could also change the map generator setting to individual starting islands. Use the command " set generator 2" for this in the Civserver.

http://www.freeciv.org/tutorials/art_of_freeciv.html

quote:

Islands vs Continents
The predominant choices for generation are 1 and 2. Gen 1 games distribute players amongst a couple of large continents, and smaller islands, and players may find themselves on their own small island, or sharing a continent with several other players. Occasionally you may even get your own continent. Consequently gen 1 isn't considered to be very fair, since a lot depends on where you end up, and who your neighbours are.

Generation 2 on the other hand, puts every player on their own island, with a bunch of little initially unoccupied islands thrown in for good measure. This guarantees everybody reasonably similar terrain on which to develop their empires, and at least a little time before open warfare can break out. Gen 3 does the same thing, but makes all islands, player and and spare ones, exactly the same size.

Gen 4 pairs players up on the same sized islands, which makes the identity of the player sharing your island the most critical part of the early game.

This will give some breathing space at the start of the game but you should try to expand as quickly as possible. Go for mapmaking and get those tiremes and settlers moving. The AI knows how to use them!

Put an end to popups!

This one thing I recently discovered myself in FC. It seems a trivial game feature, but it was missing in civ2: You can also transform ocean squares to swamp land.

quote:

> You must take a boat and move the engineer(s) onto the ocean tile you
> want to transform. By taking multiple engineers you can speed it up.

And put the boat on "sentry". If you don't, and move the boat a single
tile during the process, all work is lost.

All things together....make a big package

Not as long as you own the original Civ2. Those wouldn't be distributed with Freeciv of course. But you can use a conversion script like civ2gfx to convert them to the Freeciv format. I use civ2gfx as well, I'm simply too attached to the now iconic quality of the Civ2 graphics.

So in the normal (and SDL?) version Freeciv would use it's own graphic set. This is more a showcase of the Freeciv possibilities in general.
