Actually, there are many Canadian sporting events, and I assume this is the case with most countries.

Every group or society has it's own events and celebrations - do you get all bent out of shape everytime a church holds a picnic, or when there is a parade for a holiday such as christmas?

Ok, I'm tired of this. And maybe Mr.fun will be able to answer me.

First off, I'm NOT homophobic and I have nothing against gay poeple. But somethings really bother me like those stupid "Gay Olympics". WTF is up with that? Why do gay ppl have their own olympics? How does being gay alter your physical abilities? In no freakin way! So why does it exists?
That's how I see it, if you qualify, you go to the REAL olympics but if you suck and by anychance you're gay you can qualify for gay olympics? Why? Please dont tell me this is for "the equality of rights" between heteros and gays because if you ask me that only helps in segregating them.
It's not because you're gay that you jump farther or not. It's a physical ability you're born with even if you're gay or not.
And what about all those parades you gays have. Why? For us heteros to see you on the street parading and say:" Hey, there are those different ppl parading again." Why dont you just act like evrybody else and mix yourself up with us instead of helping the Segregation again.
I totaly agree on gay rights just like women rights. By that I mean that you should have the same job opportunities, same salary, right of marage, etc....All these "normal" things. But gay olympics? PLEASE! That's just helps society make clans of gay ppl and hetero ppl, it helps socirty seperate us and put one of the 2 aside.

If any gays are offended I'm sorry, that wasn't intended.

Spec.

Sorry I took so long to answer, Spec. I just came across this thread now.

There are no other Olympics for other minority groups, such as women, blacks, Asians, and so forth with one exception -- the Special Olympics. Unless I am mistaken about this.

Special Olympics is the only legitimate separate Olympics in my opinion for physical reasons of the participants, and I see Special Olympics as something good for society, and important.

Here is my opinion on the Gay Olympics.

Gay Olympics has no legitimate reason to function separately from the standard Olympic events. The reason I think so, is because the standard Olympics should welcome gays and bisexuals on the same level as everyone else, regardless if they're closeted or out to society.

Again, to conclude -- I believe that Gay Olympics has no legitimate reasons to exist separately from standard Olympics.

So much for being subtle.

There is absolutely nothing wrong for these games, the only possible thing that could be wrong with the "Gay Olympics" is the name, because it implies the that the Olympics discriminate against gays and exagerates the event somewhat. But, as has been said earlier in this thread, it's not called the gay olympics anymore it's called the the "Gay Games".

There is absolutely nothing wrong with any group of people organizing events and celebrations - which is exactly what this is.

Reminds me of when a kid asks "why is there a father's day, and a mother's day - but never a kid's a day?" the answer is, of course, that every day is 'kid's day'.

Unless otherwise said, any sporting event could be assumed to be the 'straight games'.

Besides, I doubt they exclude anyone from the gay games - which I think you seem to be implying.

All this nonsense with strawman arguments about Drunk College Olympics and Straight Olympics -- stay out if you can't contribute intelligent arguments.

I support Gay Pride as a civic, community event, and I support the legitimate reasons for gays and bisexuals to come out, but I cannot understand the reason for Gay Olympics.

Homosexuals and bisexuals should be welcomed into the mainstream Olympics, regardless if they are out to society or not. Then there is no reason for Gay Olympics.

Bollocks! The Olympics doesn't discriminate. Neither do student unions or any other university club.

Just because there is a majority of one kind doesn't make it not racism for a minority to create a club or group or anything with race sexuality, etc. in mind. It's the SAME THING and it's WRONG.

but they already are!! If a homosexual person is excluded from the olympics solely because he is a homosexual, it is wrong. It is simiarly JUST AS WRONG for a group to start a "Gay Games" and then say that heterosexuals can't join.

Just like, in my opinion, it's wrong to have a Student Union that anyone can enter, and then have a Black Studnet Union that whites can't join.

There should be NO such groups based on these things. Just groups. If you want to have a student union, it's just that - a student union. If you want to have an Olympic style games, that's all it should be - Olympic style games. No need to give it a name and constraints of only letting in one type of person. IT'S WRONG.

I'm having a similar debate with Starchild on ICQ about that right now.

I'm not really one for gay pride parades, and certainly not Gay Games as the Olympics are not discrimantory.

My hope is that eventually sexuality is a non-issue. And one of the routes to making sexuality an issue is by having parades, games, and other events that celebrates how you are different from the rest of society. As long as you keep telling people "Look at me, I'm DIFFERENT! I'm SPECIAL!" -- They'll treat you differently.

That's some nice selective reading.

As I said in my previous post, I doubt the Gay Games excludes anyone. Just like when a chruch holds a community event they don't screen all of the attendants for varying beliefs - it's just a gathering for anyone who cares to come, only with a certain theme.

Of course, since white heterosexual males are the norm, if you where to create an event that was to celebrate being white, male, and straight - well, hell... you'd have to be a moron not to get the message that sends.

Why? What can a black student union do that a regular student union can't do? What can a homosexual student union do that a regular student union can't do?

Black student unions would have more time and energy to specifically focus on the issues that concern black students.

And the same with gay organizations -- focusing on issues that concern gay and bisexual students.

Gay organizations should be open to inviting straights who support or sympathize with us.

Gay/Straight/Bisexual Alliance organizations are around for sexually tolerant people. More specifically, they're usually used for support purposes for GLBT teenagers, with the occasional straight person who wants to help out.

I don't see it as meaning that, for instance gay pride parades (as far as I know) let everyone participate, it's not about being gay per se, it's about celebrating - The same reason which is behind any other parade

quote:

Technically speaking, yes... but I don't know if i disagree with you on this student union thing - I'm talking about events and celebrations.

quote:

White and heterosexual pride is redundant in this society.
