Well I played WC3 multi one night at a "LAN party" and it is a true member of the genre. Much more eye candy and some nice specials, but still one with "fastest mouse arm" won. Haven't played single campaigns as my computer is way too slow(PII450), but I don't think that WC3 makes you forget C&C or WC2.
Back to "strategy vs. RPG", I think it's mostly due to fact that RPG games have fared much more better in the sales than any strategy game. Publishers can give more time(= money) to designers to finish the RPG game than the strategy game just because they know that RPG makes money. Simple, C&C sold well so everybody started making RTSs. Diablo2, BG, Fallout sold well so everybody started making RPGs. Maybe if MOO3 sells well...

I read "lasers" mentioned a couple times here. So you guys using autofire lasers instead of mass drivers? Is that somehow a lot better?
