Pledge of Alligiance - Unconstitutional? Support Apolyton, buy Alpha Centauri

a federal appeals court in San Fransisco has ruled that the pledge of alligiance is unconstitutional due to the addition of "under God", and therefore cannot be recited in schools

Just heard it on CNN...what does this mean for our youth?

That's getting appealed. The SCOTUS has already affirmed the legality of the national motto and I doubt that they are in any mood to change it now given the composition of the Court.

Even requiring students to make the pledge, with God in it or not, is unconstitutional. I got in trouble in 3rd grade for not wanting to say it. I was forced to write an essay on why it was so important, blah blah blah. Made me more against it than ever.

I stated the pledge, but always dropped "under God," when they had us recite it. For that, I look a fair amount of ridicule from some of my... less competent clasmates.

Tired of ads?

The principal tried to make me say the pledge, and then write an essay, but I didn't do either.

Ok, I've done some research on this case and it really does seem like it is extremely outside the mainstream of Constitutional law and it is very likely to be overturned, especially given the Court that handed it down.

Perhaps this is the same court that is described here.

quote:
Six days before Sept. 11 purged much of the silliness from public life, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, famously imaginative and frequently reversed, outdid itself. Rummaging around in the U.S. Constitution, it discovered that male inmates in prisons have a "fundamental" right to procreate by artificial insemination.

As for the topic. Millions of Americans have no problem with reciting the pledge and forgetting about it later on thus going on with their lives. Boris, I am sorry that you were traumatized by your experience. In my school we said the pledge as well and there were two kids that did not because of religious reasons of all things and they just sat there quitely for the few seconds it took to recite it and had no problems. You just had bad teachers.

That's the one. The judges on that court seem to be quite the masochists given how much that seem to enjoy being spanked by the Supremes.

In Greek courts you have the right to swear either

a) on the bible (new testament I think)

or

b) on your honour

I am not surprised at anything the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals comes out with. If they shipped this whole court to Cuba or China the locals there would hardly know the difference.

what's next? taking the CROSS out from our FLAAG??!!

Our jolly archbishop proclaims.

which looks like this.

One "revolutionary artist" (Panoussis) replaced the cross with the sickle and hammer and painted it red to advertise one of his theatrical satyre plays and got busted

(charged by some for desecretion of national symbol - was acquited i think).

People just like to complain. Either it's "in god we trust" or the color of the walls.

It is customes.
Greece was liberated in the name of God. Our forfathers considered themselves Romans (that's what they called themselves) fighting the infidel dogs (=muslims).

These are the costumes. I say yes to progressiveness but this quick prompt to discard the costumes does not find me in accord.

If kolokotronis heard that some are asking for the takeing out of the cross from the flag he would have slaughtered them too without seciond though

(kolokotronis was one of the formost revolutionaries in the fight of liberty) - and he also had a big cross on his helmet.

BTW they thought that only *they* were the romans. all others were something else (levantines, franks, venecians etc) - which is logical considering that eastern roman empire was alive 1000 years more than the western (where proto nationalities were taking place)

BTW, the reason this lawsuit was brought, according to the father, wasn't due to any ostracism the kid suffered. It was brought because it offended him. He only used the kid to have standing to bring the suit.

Come on Dino, I expected better of you.

"under God" was not originally in the Pledge; it was added to it in the '50s, as a way to affirm American democracy against "godless" communism. "In God We Trust" was added to paper money at the same time for the same reason, IIRC.

The phrase "under God" is a worthless anachronism and it's high time it got tossed into the wastebin of our history.
