Why Convert? Inflate your Upload Space

I see Aetheists are often attempting to convert christians to evolution and i must wonder why. I can see no rational reason why. I would think that Aetheists of ALL peaople would be least connested emotionally with religious issues and yet in general they are rabid about the issue and will not tolerate christianity although i can't see why they'd care.

This WILL be a reasonable discussion between a group of rational human beings, not a pitched abattle. Capishe?

Well, you may as well ask why religious people attempt to convert/control atheists and agnostics as well. Very seldom do atheists go door to door begging for you to switch to their beliefs.

Like when there's outrage when the possibility of "under god" being removed from the Pledge.

Atheists and agnostics may want you to move on because they find it annoying to have religious people constantly talking about God and what God wants and what God means.

It's so very annoying when you don't believe in God.

No, it's worse. They talk to you at work, and everywhere else. You can't slam a door on them!

Especially chilling is that the sign holders are smiling children.

Kinda reminds me of the old photos of the Hitler Youth...

Because that is part of their beliefs. So it's natural they'd bug you. Just get a BIG Dog and not feed him for a few days. That one 'accident' will get the point across .

Atheists do stuff like burn down churches and shout profanity at non-atheists. Not all of them, but some. And not all non-atheists make kids hold signs and stuff which is something I despise.

Still no rational reasons to convert a person to Evolution have been posted and i feel really stupid if i tell you that it's obviously the work of Satan, which is quite frankly the only one i can conceive.

It is perfectly reasonable for Christians to believe in evolution. They believe that evolution was God's tool for creating man. It is referred to as Theistic evolution. Contrary to what William Jennings Bryan and others may have you believe, belief in evolution isn't any sort of sin.

Not everyone tries to convert everyone else.

Some people are just really, really sick of "Christian Values" dictating how we live our lives.

Once the Pledge says "Godless" instead of "Under God" you'll have a point. Right now it's really, really stupid since it's predominantly the Religious people inundating non-religious people with their beliefs and values, as well as trying to convert the non-believers.

Well, there are those who believe strongly enough in evolution as to try to convert others to it. Just as we try to convert others to Christianity. In fact, many have made mention of how modern Evolutionary science has come to resemble the uncompromising dogma of various fundamentalist sects of world religions. I think it's a fair comparison in many ways.

Every so often one of these threads shows up. The word troll usually jumps to mind, but then I remember that not everyone has the benefit of good, secular education... Evolution is an accepted scientific fact, and is even accepted in principle by the Vatican. As for converting religious people, I don't do that. I just don't talk to people whose belief system radically clashes with mine. Your loss that's all I can say.

MarkG:

In the eyes of some, being Christian means that you accept that every word of the Bible is literally true. As a corollary of this view, Christians have to take the book of Genesis literally, i.e. they have to think it literally happened.

Most (but not enough) Christians do not hold this view.

I find it amusing that nearly all of these religious debate threads are started by religicists spoiling for a fight, posting inflammatory and accusatory things about atheists, evolution, etc. Then when the non-religicists show up, fight back, and make mincemeat of the religicist arguments, the religicists cry "atheists are intolerant of our beliefs!" or "athiests are shoving their beliefs down our throats!"

I find it laughably hypocritical. And I'm not even an atheist.

Most athiests don't care. They might have a friendly arguement, but attempting to change somebodies religious belief's in near impossible.

What really gets my goat is how fanatics constantly attempt to get rid of evolution in the public schools and replace it with "special creation".

Well, atheists can be JUST as extremist and convertion-happy as Christians...Not just regarding evolution, but other atheist ideas in general. In the end, they are the same fanatics, only wearing different robes.

I just equally ignore both factions and concentrate on my OWN beliefs which do not require converting anyone else but me.

The same rational reason that one day drove some people to interrupt the one who was saying "Earth is flat" and correct him.
It's called fight against ignorance and blind beliefs.
It's actually a very kind and very good reason, and it benefit to humanity on the whole.

I wouldn't hold common Darwinian evolution up as being absolute fact. I generally accept a majority of it's concepts, such as natural selection, micro-evolution and so forth. There are indisputable facts. I think it's even safe to say that anthromorphic macro-evolution can occur as well. However, there are serious scientific problems with acceping evolution as the end-all solution to all things in Biology. Such as the Cambrian Explosion, Irreducible Complexity, paucity of fossil records, unexplainable source of domesticated plants and animals, etc, etc. I think that it is perfectly reasonable to challege evolution on scientific merits, however it should still receive attention in classrooms as a very important scientific concept not to be thrown out by a couple of upset conservative parents. But to be fair though, the evolutionists who wish to side-step the problems with their theory and label those dare question them "silly creationists" are no worse than the fundamentalists that they so disdain.

Religious types try to convert others a LOT more often than atheists do. Other than some of the debate threads here (which are really more intellectual exercise than attempts to convert), the only atheist I've ever heard of who was on a conversion kick was Madalyn (sp?) Murray O'Hair.

Let me emphasize that I'm not criticizing the religious folks for this. Many of them honestly think they're doing you a service. My youngest brother, a fundamentalist Christian, truly believes that I will be tormented for eternity if I don't accept Christ before I die, and that worries him no end. Hence he preaches to me every chance he gets.
