In the south (US) which was largely rural the early highways were built directly through all the little towns, or you might say the little towns were built on the early highways.

The speed limits on these highways are usually 55mph outside the town limits.

Now the town fathers worry about all those cars whipping through their main street (the highway) and set up these speed zones like 35, or 25, or even 20.

So someone is driving a reasonable 55 down a rural highway and all of a sudden he rounds a slight bend and he is in a 35 mile zone. Almost impossible to anticipate unless you know the highway, unless you know the route from experience.

And of course the little town's one patrol car sits there all night and the officer will ticket you.

Thats a speed trap and its not right. I have had officers let me off saying "I know its wrong, the town council are all a bunch of jerks, and they won't build a ball field for the kids".

Really, they should have more signs to warn people they are approaching redneck speed zones.

also, even if the highway is state maintained the town has the right to regulate speed, but you have to put up a sign that says "reduce speed ahead", the town often can't do it because the town is often too smalll (can ride through in 35 seconds ), so they would have to petition the state to put up the reduce speed ahead sign, which don't get done....

Those exist in every country in which I've lived. The first speeding ticket I ever got was just such a trap, north of Toronto. I had left the "town" but sped up too soon. Its just that in some towns in the south speeding tickets account for most of the town budget.

Well fortunately now, in the UK, a lot of these towns and villages have had bypasses built around them to avoid this problem...these roads running through the centre of these areas caused a lot of deaths.

Now that we've got the road toll down below half what it was in the seventies by targeting drink driving, speeding and seat belt wearing, there's big public campaigns about low level speeding and how dangerous it is.

Most suburban roads in Australia have had their speed limit reduced from 60 kph (30mph) to 50 kph (25 mph) because research has shown that even a 10 kmh reduction in the speed limit has dramatic benefits in reducing accidents and death and injury, like halving it. Most people strongly support this. Enough is enough. Its my kids out there on the road now.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Years ago, my father was police commanding officer for a region of roads in Australia. He was constantly pressured to have radars placed in "revenue zones" such as at the bottom of a hill, yet he resisted, citing that their priority was public safety, not revenue. In other words, the revenue raising was the fault of the government, not the police. What was unpopular though, was having unmarked police cars with surfboards on the roof catching speeding drivers, although no one was ever able to come up with a good reason to label it "unfair"

What gets me though, is that in Australia, you can get fined more for speeding than for stealing a car!! Seriously, car theft is legally considered a "misdemeanour". Where the hell is the justice in that? Unless you're organising a car theft racket, you will never go to jail in this country!

Unfortunately though, occasionally some police do the wrong thing deliberately. My father himself was accused of speeding by more than 15km/h when he knew he wasn't speeding at all. It took showing him his Inspector's badge to get the policeman to back down. Fortunately, the cop in question was officially reprimanded after Dad told the copper's boss. Of course, such action is unavailable to civilians, but you can't eliminate human fallibility from police, or anywhere else for that matter.

There seems to be relationship between speeding and being a loser. Certainly here in Canberra the biggest speeders are the base grade clerks.

Looking at this thread too it seems to hold true that those who defend speeding are a bunch of nobody losers.

I guess speeding is the only power they have in their sad pathetic lives.

Notice how whenever he gets cornered with his trolling, he breaks out the ubiquitous "faggot" remarks. One would think that in his fits he begins channeling the spirit of Anita Bryant.

Oh wait, she's unfortunately not dead yet...damn.
