Not to be a jerk, but what's the guarantee that the other players will be "reliable vets" as well? I don't know any of them except you, so I am just curious.
Also, from the subsequent posts I deduced that these games are going to be based on the AU mod. Can you summarize the changes in that mod or point me to such a summary? I read the first few posts in the "Apolyton University Mod (PTW version)" thread and those talk about creating a "killer AI". I don't quite get how you can achieve this as you can't change the algorithms that are the foundations of the AI. Or can you?

Eli, I hope you can share the Eurasian continent in peace for awhile. We will meet soon.
I ran into an advanced start game over at fanatics. It's not really civ, since it takes all the city placement away from the player. But if you want a quick war, this looks like fun. I'll post the first turn when I can get at it this evening.
Ok, I admit it, "reliable vets" could prove to be a stretch, although many of them care enough to write well reasoned pieces and also to engage in critical debate without being nasty. Consider the term advertising copy.
The moderator idea is, I think, necessary to make PBEM tick. Our game is far far better than average, but a moderator could make other games more like ours.
There will be non-mod games in the strat group.
Some will be AU mod games, because the primary authors of that mod are involved and because I like the changes to the industrial and modern era -- I think they will help us in human games. For example, in my current game I'm using infantry offensively, due to their 8 attack, even though cavs are available. This change adds to realism for me and makes the industrial era a bit more wild and adventurous. Some of the airlift changes are also helpful, particularly on large maps. But all that is definitely debatable.

Interesting. As you said, I would never place cities like this. Must be good against the initial boredom though.
