This post is from the strat forum and is about a list of players we are getting together to start games early next year. You guys are "reliable vets" and we would love to have you folks participate if you have an interest.

The Post

I would be happy to organize several small PBEM games, with people who contribute to these strat threads anchoring the games.

PBEM works well when games are kept to a small number of people who enjoy the prospect of a game that gradually builds toward an interesting series of encounters with human opponents -- and who respond regularly.

If you think this would be fun, just post your comment and email and we will see if we can get some groups going. There is no hurry. We expect to start right after the holidays.

As of Wednesday, we had the following expressions of interest that seem likely to produce several good games.

punkbass2000
alexman
Meldor
Dominae
Theseus
Konquest02
BRC
VenomLord
ZargonX
Charis
Sir Ralph
Jshelr
WarriorPoet

We could probably also get vulture if someone gives him PTW for Xmas.

Its not that I dont agree with mods (I've made enough of my own in the past) but I dont see any advantage to playing the AU mod PBEM especially since I disagree with some of the changes. I will be wanting to join another game in the new year though, once this one is further along.

What I like most about it is the reworking of the timing and importance of some of the modern-era wonders and the material delay in the SS launch. But, as you say, if you don't like the mod these games are probably not for you.

I think the point is that many of the changes were made to allow the AI better use of its units (which is reasonable in SP). I see the AI civs in PtW as 'fillers' since a game with 8-12 humans will take too long so I dont see the need for the changes.

Not to be a jerk, but what's the guarantee that the other players will be "reliable vets" as well? I don't know any of them except you, so I am just curious.

Also, from the subsequent posts I deduced that these games are going to be based on the AU mod. Can you summarize the changes in that mod or point me to such a summary? I read the first few posts in the "Apolyton University Mod (PTW version)" thread and those talk about creating a "killer AI". I don't quite get how you can achieve this as you can't change the algorithms that are the foundations of the AI. Or can you?

Eli, I hope you can share the Eurasian continent in peace for awhile. We will meet soon.

I ran into an advanced start game over at fanatics. It's not really civ, since it takes all the city placement away from the player. But if you want a quick war, this looks like fun. I'll post the first turn when I can get at it this evening.

Ok, I admit it, "reliable vets" could prove to be a stretch, although many of them care enough to write well reasoned pieces and also to engage in critical debate without being nasty. Consider the term advertising copy.

The moderator idea is, I think, necessary to make PBEM tick. Our game is far far better than average, but a moderator could make other games more like ours.

There will be non-mod games in the strat group.

Some will be AU mod games, because the primary authors of that mod are involved and because I like the changes to the industrial and modern era -- I think they will help us in human games. For example, in my current game I'm using infantry offensively, due to their 8 attack, even though cavs are available. This change adds to realism for me and makes the industrial era a bit more wild and adventurous. Some of the airlift changes are also helpful, particularly on large maps. But all that is definitely debatable.

Are you a warmonger jshelr?

I think our game is going very well. I dont know this, but I would guess we're further along than most other games. Maybe we can be first to finish a game on a regular size map here at poly .

I will be available pretty much all the time from sat till Jan 3. How about y'all?

Isn't this a Large map? I am really curious because it looks a bit bigger than I would like it to be.

You must be a teacher or a student...

I'll be working as usual, except on the obvious holidays (Dec 25, Jan 1), so in general don't expect more than 2 turns a day from me. On the weekends/holidays I will be online pretty much all the time.

Its not impossible but I dont think so since a regular map automatically sets up eight players.

Interesting. As you said, I would never place cities like this. Must be good against the initial boredom though.
