Yes, curiously many manufacturers have recently changed from 3 year to 1 year warranties.

New drive should be here today......civ is a priority install once it arrives.

Nearly pointless post (+1) Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

I remember back in the old days…
[flashback; cue harp arpeggio]
I was putting my first computer together and had been diligently studying things computerish. I discovered that MFM and RLL drives were exactly the same except to the way the data is encoded. Yeah, sure, Seagate puts the RLL drives through an extra set of tests and a few percent more fail.

They say that using an MFM drive on an RLL controller voids the warranty. But they also say using an RLL drive on an MFM controller voids the warranty, which could not possibly do any harm. Except, of course, reveal the industry secret that consumers could get more for less.

So I figure, why am I spending $150 (the cost difference between the ST251 and the ST277R) for a 90 day warranty that is worthless?
[/flashback; cue harp arpeggio]

Boy, did I feel like I'd beat the system on that one! My Frankendrive served me well for six years.

The doctor returns Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

The doctor returns, or: how I learned to stop worrying and love the hard drive.

Unfortunately there was a brief delay in start of the second reign of the doctor, due to a strange illness hard to diagnose with the backward medical techniques of our time. But finally all is well, and he steps up to take charge, as is fitting.

1500: taxes at 70%, the strategy seems to be one of cara's and diplos to 'acquire' research from our friendly neighbours. But the treasury is at 2000.........the pork-barrel overfloweth, but where are all the pigs?

The doctor launches his comprehensive spending review; there is something for everyone.

1510 - Aztecs make laughable threats. Settler and diplo produced. NONE cannon acquired from aztecs.

1520 - 3 diplos, 4 caras. Monotheism discovered, Theology chosen. Beads to Pharsalos and Mycenae 72 and 32 respectively.

1530 - Cara and Musket produced. Cara to Tlacopan 40 gold.

1540 - Tlaxcala 62 gold. 2 cara, 1 settler produced. Galleon produced.

1550 - Chemistry borrowed from Romans (Antium).

1560 - MK 27. 3 caras produced. 1 galleon

1570 - Beads to Mycenae (32). Gold to Pharsalos (36). 2 caras produced.

1580 - Barracks in Carribbean. 3 caras produced. Beads to Tlaxcala (68). Wltkd next turn in Anaheim.

Thus the reign ends. Trade is looking better, and many diplos are out questing for knowledge. Soon we can build JSB and this will be very useful for the upcoming 'clad churning phase.

Over to the errant archer.

1580 4 Settlers? 5 Markets? Theology on the back burner? Me confused.
–––– Where are these 'vans going? And what darn fool used the GoTo?

1590 Canton builds the Eiffel Tower! President Straybow almost offers
–––– surrender, but remembers that he's a cheese-eating rodent, not a snail-
–––– eating surrender monkey. Send 'clad from ThunderMtn to sink Roman ship
–––– and 3 cargo; now Vet. Tiki Spice to Tzin 90, that should finish Theology.
–––– Start moving ships to MK for Shakespeare to quell unhappiness.

1600 Lab rats invent Theology; Stinkin' Aztecs get RR and cancel HG:
–––– Nine cities go into disorder! I must choose between Exp and RR, and
–––– somehow I doubt ole Monty is willing to trade. RR it must be or forget
–––– Darwin! Hypo wants peace, we agree but can't ask for Tribute? MK Gems to
–––– ThunderMtn 159; TM Beads to MK 53 (not like there's demand anywhere)
–––– Dip destroys Colosseum in Rome (what else are they good for?)
–––– Set rates to 4/4/2 (Oh yeah, and Carib built a Mkt)

1610 Order restored in the Rat race. Main Street Gems to MK 22 (+6 )
–––– Greek city revealed by barb attacks near Buffalo W of Carib
1620 SpaceMtn builds Mkt, Steamy Cloth to MK 22 (+7 ) I just noticed that
–––– ThunderMtn has Gems as a repeating demand!
1630 ThunderMtn Mkt, exploring, pushing camels around
1640 Mal Temple; Tiki, MainSt, Tomorrow & Steamy Mkts; several Gems
–––– Lab rats build a Choo-choo, I choose Explosives next. Find continent to
–––– West of Aztecs
1650 Coal now in demand! MK Gems to ThunderMtn 110; demand vanishes
–––– Euro Gold to Tomorrow 64, Hut Adv Tribe Goofyville (size 2, Temple) to
–––– West of Aztecs. All warships now registered in Magic Kingdom, their families
–––– cheered by the Bard. 4 food and 4 commodity 'vans invested in…

1660 Darwin's Voyage completed in Steamboat Willy (where else?) gives us
–––– Explosives and Industrialization, and we are studying Corporation
–––– Aargh, Indian Frigate sunk our Galleon near Goofytown. DDuck beads to MK
–––– 11 (and only +4??) Bribe barb elly near DisChina, move Dip in range of barbs
–––– near unnamed Greek city. New continent found to North, drop off a 'van to
–––– explore while the Gold 'van gets delivered to Carib.

State of the Nation Address
Our trading empire is now the finest in the world! Markets more than doubled to 12, and new routes raise intercity trade by a third. Settlers are improving the land. Our warships press toward our enemies, and our sailors brave shoals and shores to find new lands.

I petition the Senate, and my distinguished successor, to build the glorious pipe organ that Songmeister Laureate Bach has envisioned for us. The Indians have already started to build one, determined to seduce him to their lands.

Planting forests near MK so we'll be back up to 10 shields, and near shield-impoverished SW. With a few more turns I would send a Settler or two for new cities on the continent just discovered, and replace them with Engrs for all the yardwork. There's plenty more of that needed.

I can't believe I didn't raise lux seeing two civs were already researching RR. And I forgot to drop science to nothing and hold the caravans until Darwin was finished. D'oh! Headed for the mop closet at The Institute.

Really I'd do more than that with a few more turns: pump out Engrs and disband Orlando so it can be built in a more practical location... where it won't interfere with management of the Mickey Mouse Canal!

Most perplexing. Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

I'm getting that mysterious trade route bug again. For example, here's what I see in the city windows for Magic Kingdom and Steamboat Willy. If I reload and look don't open any cities (or ony MK) the total trade is 67, with the SW route being +7. If I open any other cities MK trade drops to 65 and the route shows as +5.

I tried quitting and reloading just before hitting [Enter] for the new turn, but I don't think it helped.

This should be pretty interesting. Spotless rep, win by conquest. I haven't seen the map since 540AD (end of my first turns). since it's giga-, I expect to see many new and wondrous things.

Re JSB -- It's a WoW I rarely (if ever) build in my solo games.
Please offer your reasons why we should build this so I can make a semi-informed decision.

JSB will be critical for democratic conquest, since the effect is applied after units have been made unhappy due to combat units being away from home, and hence can mitigate this effect. This is not the case with Mikes.

Thanks for the input, DrSpike & La Fayette. The Academy's helpful mien is such a boon!
-----------------------
Well, I opened it up and had a look around. Actually looked like a pretty normal progression from my previous go-round. Could it be that this game is being played roughly in "my" style?

Summary of Conditions: We are a Spotless Democracy with 2063 GP, turning a lovely profit @ 40-40-20. At peace with all but the Romans -- so at least there's someone to fight! Just started Corporation, research = 6 turns @40%.

Pop = 6.71 MM but we are actually 2nd in Land Area to the filthy Greek pig-dogs. Need new settlements!

Indians and Chinese both building Bach's Big Organ, so we'll be needing to rush some camels (fortunately, have cash ). Currently 12 are in production, along with 3 engineers, 2 muskets, and a couple of marketplaces. Hmm.

Notably needed techs -- Military!!! Conscription, Leadership -->> Tactics. University, Ironworking also MIA.

Tinkering suggests we can do some celebrating at 10-40-50. Will think about that prior to hitting "Enter."

Tonight -- We play.
