What is this going to mean for the international space station. They can't cancel all flights like they did in the 80's. They have to keep that supplied. The russians can't do it alone.

I was in school when the Challenger blew up. My last period of the day we watched news all class.

Does the ISS need the shuttle? I though supplies and crews came on Russian (Soyuz & Progress) rockets and the shuttle was just for the construction jobs.

If the ISS was left without a crew, could they go back to it a few months later and start again without problems?

they need it for crew changes. Although the russians have their method of getting cosmonauts up there.

I was in fourth grade at the time. As I recall it happened before lunch time here in Califonria. I was watching it live when it happened and everyone kept asking the teacher what had happened and the teacher just said "I'm not sure", turned the TV off and went on with the day's leasons.

My school tried so suppress the news and go on teaching. It was only my last class we watched the news. Humanities class- that was a worthless class anyways

I can't help but think about strange coincidences in this case though. I know they are only coincidences, but the conspiracy theories will be everywhere because of the Israeli and other things on this mission.

A terrible tragedy!

I watched one old documentary about Challenger disaster one month ago.
I nerver thought that something similar could happen today, 20 years later.

I just don't understand that some folks here are so full of racial hate (Blame the ___!)
With such (wrong) attitude no conflict will ever be solved (it would just be "eye for eye", then again "eye for eye", and again and again...)

I am watching cbs news on the internet and Dan Rather is reading a poem and almost crying. I just hope that this wont stop the internation space station and the space program as a whole. IT is said, but exploring space is dangerous and sadly people will die along the way.

Maybe you mean San Angelo sweetie.........that I know of there is no San Augisitn in Texas. But I"ve only lived here for 25 years. It was quite surreal we just got up and it was like watching the shuttle challenger all over again.

You place more importance on symbolism than on human life, yeah, I get it. I just don't agree with it.

It would not have been a tragedy if there was no-one on board. To me the loss of human life is what makes it a tragedy.

I kind of agree with you actually Big C, my reaction to this event is more shock than grief - similar to the death of Diana. I didn't really understand the people who were weeping in the streets, but it was certainly a highly emotional moment.

It really is terrible that we have lost the lives of dedicated crew members such as those on Columbia.

I was leaving the campus cafeteria, and stopped in front of our large lounge television and was watching the live news in the middle of it -- never saw the explosion live.

I ran back to my dorm, to turn on CNN and found out what has happened.


As for Palestinian extremists partying over the deaths -- create another thread for that.
I am angry with the Palestinian extremists who are partying now -- not all Palestinians in general.

Is there anyone out there who has debris on their property?

I have a ranch in corsicana texas (one of the 4 places where debris has fallen) and i havent looked yet cause its a big ranch but i heard the whole thing and saw the smoke lines in the sky...did anyone else?

Btw, I think one reason why people should stay away from debris could be if there is hydrazine (rocket fuel) in the area. It's both very toxic and carcinogenic.
