Che, you are trolling, right?!
If you aren't, I can only say, you are saying this because you ain't a woman. |
Nope. I've thought about this to some extent. I used to be part of the 'string 'em up' posse, but I've come to the conclusion that treating rape differently than other forms of violence is patronizing to women. We act as if it's the most horrible thing that can happen to a person (and remember, plenty of men get raped also). We act as if it will totally destroy a person's life, and sometimes it does. Most people, even women, get on with their lives. It doesn't come close to being murdered, terminating your consciousness, your existence.
I've known plenty of people who were raped. Yeah, it can be a life altering event. It can destroy you. So can being jumped and beaten nearly to death. It takes away your sense of security, your ability to trust, it severs your connections to other human beings.
Either rape isn't as bad as we make it out to be or we don't treat non-sexual violence anywhere nearly as bad as we should.

I think the real problem is that people for the most part underplay the fact that men are raped. The reason women are patronized is they're singled out as the victims of rape. It's something that happens specifically to them, and not just anybody.

if I was a woman, I'd certainly prefer to be mugged than raped. Being mugged is not fun at all but you recover from it within a short period. Being raped is something that alters your life forever.

I know that I would far rather be mugged than raped (by guy or girl)

Of course, if you carry around a nice, loaded handgun, you can worry less about muggings and rape, and muggers and rapists can start worrying more about getting their brains blown out - this is how things should be.

Women are frequently pressured into having sex they don't want to have. It doesn't have to be violent or traumatic. It can be annoying. Many women consider it normal to be forced to "have sex." The problem you all are having is you refuse to acknowledge all the permutations of rape. |
That's not my problem. That's a problem with these women, or rather, the society that makes them think it's normal that way. Being forced to have sex is not normal, full stop. I don't see any permutations - the only criterion is consent.

You are also all refusing to acknowledge how traumatizing being beaten or even being mugged can be. Some of you are very flippant about being a victim of crime, without realizing that it too can really f*ck up your head. |
Sure, but you are speaking about exceptional cases in these other crimes as compared to what happens much more frequently with rape cases.
You forgot rape is mostly about power, not sex. Hence, the victims, mostly women, are made to suffer and be humiliated. This is not a factor in most other crimes.

You ask if I'd rather be mugged or raped. I could be mugged and shot or stabbed or beaten and left for dead. I imagine you have no freaking clue how scary it is to be mugged, how out of control you feel when it's happening, how you don't feel safe walking around anymore. And I wasn't even overtly threatened with violence.
On the other hand, I could be passed out cold and raped. Unless someone told me, I might not even be aware it happened. |
Sure, but you forgot rape victims can also be beaten or shot or stabbed and left for dead. No difference there.
