NYE, I'm interested. What does this party (which I assume is yours) stand for ? Is there a big gap in its electorate between Alberta and the rest of Canada ?

Not just Albertans but mostly; it's mainly a western party. And their goal is to remake Canada in the image of the US. Most people aren't buying it though, especially in the east.

I find it amazing that Canada threw in with the French and not with the US, UK and Australians and the rest of the coalition.

Americans will remember. This will affect relations for awhile.

As to the point that many Canadians are against the war because it might cause more problems than it solves - two points.

First, that is primarily the US's concern since we will be the targets. Raising this issue is almost like saying that Canada does not support the war because it will be costly to the American taxpaer.

Second, it cannot possibly be bad for the US and the world to have a democratic, pro-US government in Iraq vs. leaving Saddam in power.

Yes. Last election they managed to put together significant support in BC and Saskatchewan too (the neighbouring provinces) to the extent of winning the majority of seats from those two.

But in the rest of the country they won 3 or 4 seats out of the 200 remaining.

A while.

Last elections were 2001. The next elections must be called by 2006, most likely in 2005.

They're not a serious threat to forming the government in the foreseeable future. The Liberals have that locked up for a while. They might be able to force a coalition government (though if they did that, the Liberals would choose to govern with the aid of the NDP, not the CA).

But as things are looking right now, their support crested a while ago, and is busy receding.

Stand for?

They are a populist party that sprang from disillusionment with our current traditions and structures of government. It started on the Prairies, like many populist movements in Canada have, such as the CCF (our Socialists) and the Progressives (got co-opted by the Conservatives).

There is a high concentration of conservatives in the party, so they typically have conservative social and economic platforms.

They are not my party, btw. I don't belong to any party. I switch voting between the Liberals and the Conservatives.

Frogger is correct that the Liberals will be the government for the forseeable future.

You missed the sarcasm. In both of those conflicts, Canada was involved from the very beginning. The US on the other hand sat on their butts for years before they finally decided to get their noses bloodied. They may have sat out WWII entirely if it wasn't for Peral Harbour.

More CA MPs come from BC, than Alberta (Alberta returned a higher percentage though; 23 of 26 vs 26 of 34). They took over half of Saskatchewan, a few in Manitoba and a couple in Ontario.

I wouldn't say they are after an American image. Elected upper houses are being discussed in Westminster now, too.

You'd also have to look at the percentage of the voters in the ridings voting Alliance. I suspect that will be higher in Alberta, though I could be wrong. And the party did have it's beginning there.

That's not their only platform though. In many areas, they have a great deal of similarity with the Republicans in the US. And an elected upper house is hardly an Alliance thing, many people would like to see it, myself included.
