	Date my Globe! Suffering from ads?

One of the habits I have is everytime I see a globe that looks the least bit old I have to try and figure out when it was made without looking at the copyright date. I'm hardly an expert at this, its just something I like doing.

Recently I found a small tin globe/penny bank at an antique store, pre WWII at least. It has no date on it and I haven't really researched how old it is because I think that would take some of the fun out of it. But now I think it would be kind of cool if I gave the question to you guys to see what you came up with for a possible date. Here's the globe...



The base says "WORLD BANK - AS YOU SAVE - SO YOU PROSPER" and also Made in the USA by the Ohio Art Company if anyone cares to know(I'm secretly hoping some Antique Roadshow buff will tell me this is worth $10,000).

I'll start you guys off with the obvious, Europe...

It's post 1948. Israel's on the map. I wouldn't date it too much later than that, since it still shows Germany united.

I got a globe that is from the 1880s... let me find it... it has French possessions of Africa on it. I think it was just after Italy unified...

Leningrad vs. St. Petersburg vs. Petrograd.

The map is post WW 1, post October Revolution.

Clue number 2.

Existence of Poland, but not with Polish Corridor:

After WW 2.

Clue number 3:

Existence of Yugoslavia.

Post WW2, before 1992.

Clue number 4:

Unified Germany,

After 1988.

My guess is that the globe dates to 1989.

Don't call the antique roadshow just yet.

Finland has its pre-WW2 borders, with Viipuri etc attached. But then, the German-Polish border cannot be anything but post-WW2. Not to mention Israel.

This globe contradicts itself.

West Africa is largely green, the color of France, i.e., Africa is still colonized. Spanish Morroco still exists.

Austria, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia seem to be a menage a trois. What is that tumescence projecting eastward from Austria? Never mind...

Also Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Norway are all the same color. Some sort of Teutonic federation, no doubt.

Labrador is a different color than Canada, but the island of Newfoundland is not. When did the Newfies join, 1948 or so?

Not necessarily, che. You might just as well say that Germany controls the Netherlands, and Denmark, too. just rather poor colouring IMO. ( I thought the same way you did, but something makes me doubt. )

EDIT: Labrador is the name of the "breakaway province"

Looking at it more, I'm sure I've seen this globe before. Its rather small and made of metal, isn't it? I can't remember where, I just remember seeing it a loooong time ago. But then again I'm not that old! =)
