Survey of the Empire (1800 AD):

Tax Rate 40/40/20 yeilds net income of 165 gold and new discoveries every 12 turns

6 cities; build orders 2 diplomats, 1 caravan, 1 riflemen, 2 galleon

We are Inadequate with a spotless reputation

Our Enemies:
Babylonians = Republic, 31 techs, researching Gunpowder, Peace; 5 cities

French = Democracy, 47 techs including Industrialism & Theology, researching Communism (MPE is soon to be gone); 12 cities and are building J.S. Bach

Egyptians = Republic, 49 techs including Industrialism, researching Electricity; 8 cities and are building Women's Suffrage

Chinese = Republic, 39 Techs, researching Metalurgy; 10 cities

Greeks = Fundamentalist, 38 techs, researching Industrialization, 17 cities

Mongols = Despotism, 12 techs, researching pottery , 4 cities

My scientific research goals are Tactics and then on to Espionage (which requires us to acquire Industrialism and Communism)

Meet with French Emissary (7 Rifles) Pay 150 gold for Cease Fire
Gift Chivalry - Receptive
Gift Polytheism - Cordial
Gift Leadership - Worshipful

They tell us to go away (I was hoping for a tech exchange too, but not sure if we had anything left to offer them for Industrialization).

Change production in KenobiKave and Sad King Julius from Galleons to Diplomats

Press End turn!

French begin construction of Women's Suffrage
Egyptians are nearly complete Women's Suffrage
Greeks kill lone diplomat south of Six's Torch

1802 Turn (1):

Tech choices: Choose Tactics over Atomic Theory & Electricity
Git's Hole completes Diplomat
Lagomorphia completes Riflemen, change to diplomat
Cannon kills Greek Cannon
Change Spare Oval from Caravan to Dragoons (for approaching Barbs)

The Warlordian People demand new leadership, President Sparrowhawk is burned at the stake for a heritic, anarchy reigns, adjust sliders to 30-40-30 to keep the people happy, minor city adjustments to prevent disorder

End turn

Egyptians complete Women's Suffrage in Thebes
Greeks Fanatic attacks our valiant Fanatics unit and lose (though our fanatic unit is in deep red)

1804 turn (2):

Sad King Julius, Pax STYOM and Kenobi Kave all commission diplomats

Sparrowhawk proclaimed High Priest of new Fundamentalist Government
Tax Rate adjusted to 60/0/40 (all cities should celebrate)
Net Income = 261 gold per turn
Discoveries (with one Scientist) 650 turns (Caravans and Diplomats all are accompanied by our "researchers" however )

Hides from Pay STYOM to Pi-Ramesses 88 Gold
Hides from Git's Hole to Pi-Ramesses 86 Gold
(Hindsight suggests that I should have waited for the celebrations to begin before delivering )

End Turn

French (Lyons) builds J.S. Bach's Cathedral
Greeks develop Industrialization
Greeks steal medicine from Git's Hole
Greeks attack advancing units to the south and we lose 5 units (2 riflemen, 1 fanatic, 1 diplomat, 1 cannon)

1806 Turn (3)

All cities celebrate
Buy back Six's Torch (for STYOM ) for 1014 gold; get 106 gold in return and Industrialization
Galleon upgrade to transport
Settlers upgrade to engineers
Change production in Six's Torch to Marketplace
Meet with Greek emissary (5 rifles) request cease fire - denied!! WAR

Discover Chinese city of Hangchow
Fortify Fanatics and Riflemen south of Six's Torch, surrounded by Cannon/Crusaders

End turn

Babylonians develop Gunpowder
Egyptians acquire Thelogy from the French
French acquire Fundamentalism from Egyptians
Chinese develop Metalurgy

Riflemen promoted to Vet (deep red) after attack from Greeks

1808 Turn (4):

Git's Hole completes diplomat, change to Fanatics
Lagomorphia completes diplomat, change to dragoons
Six's Torch rush marketplace for 152 gold
Bribe Greek Cannon 342 Gold
Kill Barb Musket north of Spare Oval leaving Dragoon exposed to remaining barb Musket (Sparrowhawk shakes his head an stupidity )
Hides caravan from Git's Hole to Thebes 116 gold
Spice caravan (demanded) from Spare Oval to Thebes 256 gold
Establish embassy with Chinese (in anticipation of losing Marco Polo's Embassy and also because Chinese have no techs we need)

Adjust tax rate to 70-0-30 (cities still celebrate)
Net Income at 433 gold
Science still around 650 turns
Change Pax STYOM, KenobiKave and Sad King Julius to Caravan

End Turn.

Egypitians develop Electricity
Riflemen gets vet status after defeating Greek Knight and Riflemen
Barb Musketmen kills Dragoons

1810 Turn (5):

Sad King Julius completes cloth Caravan, change to Dragoons
KenobiKave completes salt Caravan, change to Dragoons
Pollution near Lagomorphia
Six's Torch Completes Marketplace, change to Fanatic
Pax STYOM completes hides caravan, change to Dragoons

Cannon kills Greek Knight
Spare Oval completes Fanatic, starts work on Palace (though residents complain to High Priest of construction company, last Palace collapsed shortly after construction was complete )

Steal Electricity from Egyptians (Giza)
Upgrade Ironclad to Destroyer
Egyptians condemn Warlordian Terrorism (though our reputation is still spotless )

Riflemen kill Greek Cannon

End Turn

French request meeting, 7 Rifles, want to let us know they complete Communism
Marco Polo's Embassy rendered useless
French start on United Nations

1812 Turn (6):

Cannon destroys Greek Cannon
Riflemen from Lagomorphia attack and kill Greek Cannon
Rush Palace in Spare Oval (though Contractor complains of this being the problem with the last Palace )

Complete Dragoon in Sad King Julius

End Turn

Greek Knights attack Warlordian Engineers cleaning pollution on hills south of Lagomorphia, Engineers win and are promoted to Veteran
Barbarian Muskateer dies attacking Fanatic in Spare Oval

1814 Turn (7):

Spare Oval completes Palace, Warlordian capital moved to Spare Oval

Wandering diplomat runs into Babylonian Explorer, they request audience
Babylonians (1 arrow) demand Railroad and we readily agree (Icy)
Gift Sanitation (Neutral)
Gift Industrialization (Cordial)
Gift Democracy (Worshipful)
Demand tribute = We Ignore your Feeble Threats
(Sparrowhawk determines his contact with other nations needs work)

Spare Oval Wine delivered to Thebes 86 Gold
Cannon kills Greek Cannon
Cannon kills Greek Knight
Cannon kills Greek Fanatic
Establish Embassy with the Greeks
Fanatic Kills Greek Diplomat and promoted to Vet

End Turn

Greek Crusaders and 2 Knights die attacking our Riflemen/Fanatics in fortress

1816 Turn (8):

Cannon kills Greek Cannon
Fanatic kills Greek Cannon

Contemplete bribing Thebes as my city, would take almost all of our Gold and would be easy to bribe back so decide not to, leave diplomat with one movement point remaining in case my succesor thinks otherwise

Decide to retire without damaging our empire any further

Net Income is now 439 per turn
Discoveries at 663 turns
Tactics almost complete (though Egyptians have been researching it for a while, so I think we should wait and steal it from them) Then if we can trade it to the French for Communism, we could potentially have Espionage in a couple turns )

We have Embassies with the Egyptians, Chinese & Greeks
We don't have Embassies with the Babylonians, French and Mongols

We have 4105 Gold and 51 Techs (Industrialization and Electricity added during my turnset)

* Sparrowhawk passes the Torch (pun intended) to either STYOM or Jrabbit.

Nice log, Sparrowhawk.

Shocking number of troops lost vs. AI. Were the 5 units losto the Greeks in 1804 in a stack, or was there a concerted attack?

Good call on going Fundy. The income boost and massive troop support will go a long way toward supporting our need to raze.

IIRC, the 5 troops were in two seperate stacks, each with a riflemen for protection, and both on Forrest I think. The Fanatic I had moved into the stack for protection (it was the one badly injured on the previous turn), and they were all trying to get to the fortress outside of Heraklia (?sp?). Obviously they didn't make it , though I did later take the fortress and have been accumulating units there for the attack.

Another note to my successor...there is a diplomat in Chinese territory, I was hoping to use it either to establish an embassy with the French or the Babylonians, but they are both a ways away, or to steal tech from the Chinese, but they have nothing we want.

Personally, (in SP) I almost never stack moving troops. (Obviously, in some situations, it's unavoidable.) Instead, I put the weakest/least valued troop in harm's way and keep the rest in position to mop up in case of attack (behind/flanking).

(Of course, if the attack is from an unexpected direction, you're screwed.)

I thought so.......or to be more precise.......I thought something like Five units!! How do I explain this to the Succession Game Group!!

They did use Cannons to attack though, so even if non-vet that is 8 attack for them compared to 6 defense for us (assuming non vet, and I am unsure of that...see Leo's/Sun Tzu's discussion above )

Rabbitlog Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

It's 1816 and a Rabbbit is installed as Grand Imam of the empire. We're at 70-20-10, netting 429 gold and a tech every 38 turns. 4105 in the treasury, reduced to 3986 after some intial investmentsw. We have troops poised against Herakleia, which is protected by walls. We note a Greek city in the black 42, 60. Move sliders to 70-0-30.

Goals -- Get tactics, communism, and espionage, build a railroad, do some exploring. Re-establish embassies as needed. Upgrade infrastructure. Build armies for conquest. Build dips for future spies.

1818
--Six celebrations cancelled.
--Find Greek city of MEGARA (1). It's occupied.
--Six's Torch appears to be a battleground, but we are adequately entranched in a fortress. Our cannon kills theirs.
--Lagomorphia starts Palace.
--Chinese chat (10 cities, Republic, 4 arrows. They are Hostile and demand Inustrialization. We decline, request a peaced treaty. They declare us "unworthy."

1820
--Chinese learn Conscription.
--We learn Tactics! Dragoons converted to Cavalry and lose their vet status.
--Pollution near Lagomorphia.
--We attack Megara with 2 Cavalry. City razed, cavs both turn to vets (thank you Sun Tzu!).
--Dip shows Herakleia protected by Fanatic, Rifle, city walls and barracks.
--Move to 80-0-20 (+323)

1822
--Lagomorphia completes Palace, basks in the glory of Capital status. Starts Factory.
--Another Cavalry turns Vet vs. Greek legion.
--Our destroyer takes out Greek galleon and goes Vet.
--Hut yields NONE Musketeer.
--Engineers re-trained for RR construction duties.

1824
--Chinese get Industrialization from Babylonians.
--Greeks bribe our fanatic, who kills himself against our fortressed stack outside Herakleia.
--3 more dips built, 2 sent to help take down the walls.
--Greed losses: cannon, settler, 2 legion

1826
--Lagomorphia completes Factory in a rush.
--Greek losses: 2 legions, one cannon
--Cities spotted: Nishapur (5), Tabriz (3), Tietsin (5), Thessalonica (9).
--Mongols chat -- no arrows. The demand Gunpowder (NO). We demand tribute (WAR).
--Cloth, Hides, and Salt delivered to Marseilles (12) = 86 + 135 + 147.
--More Greek losses: rifle, cruc, legion, 2 cannon.

1828
--SKJ builds dip, starts factory.
--Bribe barb dragoon outside French city of (???). It kills a dragoon, goes vet.

1830
--French/Greek war ends.
--Egyptians learn Tactics, Chinese learn Feudalism.
--Greek losses: Galleon (attacked KenobiKave!), rifle, legion, cannon.
--We lose a cavalry.

1832
--Indecisive French and Greeks declare war again.
--SKJ completes factory
--2 more cities polluted
--KenobiKave completes camel
--Greek losses: 2 fanatics, settler
--Bribe 2 more dragoons (102 each), take barb king (150).
--French (6 rifles) chat -- demand 200 GP (given), but decline peace due to our "puny" status.
--Establish French embassy. They have Communism and Theology, but are tired of our endless chatter.

1834
--French nearly done with UN, declare peace with Babylonians.
--SpareOval completes factory.
--Git's Hole continues camel production (hides repeat)
--Lagomorphia switches from cavalry to dip production.
--Stumble upon (and kill) another barb king.
--Dips hit Herakleia (kill knight production, then city walls ). Troops kill remaining 2 defenders, but city is still size 4 when empty, so we don't enter.

(Our mistake was letting them continually hurl defenders to their deaths against our fortressed stack, waiting for enough dips to take all the city's infrastructure. Little did I know the walls would fall with the 2nd dip!!!)

1836
--French build the United Nations in Paris, declare peace with Greeks.
--Greeks learn Communism.
--We finde Ellipi (6), Pergamon (no walls!), and another city whose name is a weird squiggle starting with M.

Troops Afield
--We have some exploring transports out there with dips.
--We have a transport with 3 NONE dragoons and an accompanying Destroyer in the seas between Greek and French lands.
--There's a camel heading east from KenobiKave with demanded Spice. There's a DD escort nearby.

Enemy Alert
--The Egyptians are quiet, but keep 2-3 ships active in the seas off Sad King Julius/Six's Torch.
--The Greeks are suicidal, but if we keep letting them kill all their troops in the field, their cities will be difficult to raze.

I opted to build what I could while keepting the treasury in the 4000+ range. IIRC we have a player who lost his city, maybe this will help enable him to reclaim a home.

It's time, I believe, for us to give serious thought to each of us claiming our 2nd city. (Ideally, these would contain WOWs). I decided to wait until we have spies before I grabbing mine.

Also -- The French refuse to trade us Communism, but fortunately, the Greeks have learned it. Steal it now (duh) so we can move on to Espionage!

We need spies so we can use poison attacks. Razing is pretty hit-or-miss without this tool, and we need to start getting these foreign cities off our pristine lands!!!

I am the last person who should be offering RCC (but I will anyway.... ), with celebrating cities under Fundamentalism, I think the net income would have been higher then with 0 Luxuries and higher taxes.

(by your own log, the net income went from 429 gold at 70% taxes to 323 gold at 80% taxes after the celebrations ended)

10% Increase in taxes results in 100 gold less per turn.

While I understand your desire to increase the Science rate, I think if you had adjusted the rates to 50T/30L/20S, you would have achieved the same result without losing the celebrations (and thereby keeping the higher caravan payoffs, both for Science and for Cash ).

* Sparrowhawk has become a huge fan of a celebrating Fundamentalist government
arty:

Having said that, it seems you had quite a productive turnset , and you are right that it seems I could have attacked Herekalia earlier too , as I also allowed the Greeks to throw units against our fortresses . However, now that you have acquired us tactics (and soon Espionage), the Greeks cannot survive long on our Continent

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

1836ad What ? We don’t have more cities than that ? And no espionage yet. With the special rules to obey, it’s going to be tough. I start building a palace in Sad King Julius and hit enter. Only bright point : we are rich, 4847 gold.
1838ad. Greeks lose many units. We steal Communism from Corinth. Embassy with Babylonians. It’s hard to raze cities when you have no spy and there is no unit in them !
1840ad Newly founded greek city of Sycon razed. Embassy with the Mongols. We’re now looking for espionage.
1842ad Corinth walls are down. No more units in.
1844ad Still killing greek units and trying to establish some railroads.
1846ad. With moderate power and spotless reputation, we are sneaked attacked by Egyptians. They sink our transport with the 4 camels that should have brought us espionage !!!
1848ad. We raze another greek city, Pharsalus, I believe. Spice to Avignon. For more than 3000 gold cost, we incite revolt and capture Heliopolis. I like the name, so I don’t change it. I hope we can defend the city. I wanted to avenge the loss of the caravans, but was it a good decision as my second city ?
1850ad More beating on the greeks. Egyptians can’t get at us … yet. Pergamon razed.
1851ad. Chinese sneak attack us ! (why ???) and they sink an empty transport. A transport with five caravans leaves for the French continent. May the gods be with us.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Greeks are annoying but no real threat. Egyptians, Chinese and French should be another story. Why did they sneak attack me. We have 2651 gold. If the transport and its 5 caravans reach the French, we should get espionage and the power to bribe another fat city.
Overall, the situation is quite difficult and I am afraid I did not improve it enough.
Good luck to my successor : here is the save.

Friendly recommendation -- send out an empty boat, then a second, then ship chain the camels -- try not to have a loaded boat at sea longer than necessary (hard to do in the beginning, but at this stage, it should be standard operating procedure.)
