As an atheist, I would certainly support the placement of very large teddy bears on dangerous bends, filled with shock-absorbing material and fitted with airbags.

The gay-student expulsion thing was pretty daft and off-topic, but just to add my nail to the coffin, the school was in the wrong. The kid wasn't having sex at school or anything; so far as I can tell, he was merely admitting that his compass pointed south. He wasn't technically expelled for anything but an unusual but harmless state of being, it seems. No genuinely disruptive conduct or speech.

It's under the 1st Amendement, the part about not being able to establish religions, which means no religious displays can be put up on public property.

Crosses have been specifically forbidden by every court ruling for the past 30+ years.

That means the STATE cannot establish a religion. Doesn't mean a memorial to a person that happens to have a religious symbol on it is illegal.
