That is precisely why I chose to go to bed first

Here we are:

1888:
LF looks at the Empire and decides that the time has come to paint all warriors with shining war paintings:
1) Revolution (since no one would understand LF, happy owner of Communism and SoL, starting a war without the possibility to build vet spies).
2) Prepare the departure of a settler (in fact an engineer) towards Zululand, because Zulugate is really quite far from the green core cities.
3) Complete our long shipchain (war REQUIRES a war treasury).

PRESS ENTER

1889:
We choose Communism ( ) with lux at 60 in order to induce most cities to celebrate.
GATEZUL founded (with the first 4 armours + 3 vet spies inside)
Our cruiser destroys a Carth cavalry along Zulu coast.
Many armours and vet spies sail towards Zulugate.

1890:
12 cities celebrate. Lux at 40.
Carth cruiser kills our musketeer in Cerberus' Gate.
Gold (d) from Athens to Galen = 316g
Wine (d) from Aristotl to Archimedes = 227g

(I must stress the special pleasure I have had to help Aristotl deliver wine to Archimedes, once in my life)

Our spy 'acquires' Fundy from Mongols.
LONG SHIPCHAIN (13 transports) COMPLETED (at long last ).

1891:
Our spies map Zululand = not a single offensive unit inside Zulu cities (hurrah!), but a number of Carth cav and marines (they are allied and the Carths look much more aggressive).
Gems (d) from Cyclops to Zulugate = 176g
Copper (d) from Charybdis to Argo = 180g
Oil (nd) from Athens to Sparta = 132g
Dye (d) from Archimedes to Polly Famous = 151g
Wine (d) from Scylla to Plato = 180g

(to be continued next post)

Got spare money?

1892:
CUNAXA = 36g plunder (+ Machine Tools), small city but strategically vital: our harbour in Zululand.
HLOBANE = 216g plunder (+ UN)
ZIMBABWE = 124g (+ Mike)
ULUNDI = 156g
Our fighter fails against Carth cav (remember the sad sound = iiiiiiiiiiiiih... baoum)

1893:
INTOMBE = 182g (+ Darwin)
MPONDO = 154g
CREMONA = 47g
This means that there are now more than 20 partisans + a dozen Carth units on the battlefield (Julius and SG[1] would be welcome with their toothbrushes)

1894:
ZULU buy ZIMBABWE back

(that was a smart move despite the very high price for them, because I happened to have 4 armours inside the city)

1895:
The Zulus are democrats = we are compelled to take back Zimbabwe the hard way (I hate to be obliged to destroy my own units)
Our coneheads discover Mini

1896:
Contact with our faithful allies, the Chinese (who have sent about 7 destroyers offshore Zululand and sent most of the Zulu navy to the bottom while we were conquering the core cities ).
We give them Fundy + Espionage. They give us Computers and Labor Union, then suddenly get bored with this tiresome alliance

Notes to my successor

1) There are 2 freights inside Cunaxa. One is demanded in Hlobane, the other one in Intombe IIRC. Please, deliver them at once because they should make us rich and we need it (for example to avoid losing Zimbabwe again to the Zulus)

2) Please, don't destroy our shipchain: it is our best weapon.

Note #3 to my successor:

I leave it to you but, if I were you, I would sell a few costly improvements inside ex-Zulu cities, in order to improve our treasury at once (I would perhaps have escaped the Zulu buy back if I had done that sooner).

M. La Fayette,

Like a hot knife (a tank knife, it seems) thru buttah!! Looks very good, indeed. I particularly enjoyed reading this bit...

quote:
Wine (d) from Aristotl to Archimedes = 227g

(I must stress the special pleasure I have had to help Aristotl deliver wine to Archimedes, once in my life)

But this bit is puzzling...

quote:
Our spies map Zululand = not a single offensive unit inside Zulu cities (hurrah!)

The previous save shows those Demo cities to be fully garrisoned. Is this some Gallic humor that I am missing?? This is a definite possibility for I have not had my wake coffee yet.

quote:
This means that there are now more than 20 partisans

I am unsure about this being a bad thing. Of course, it is better to cover all the main tiles and effect the takeover w/o getting ANY partisans. But, if by so doing, you have used up movement points and then the campaign nets only two or three cities instead of the seven you took from them. They, partisans, don't pose any meaningful threat, in my experience, except to zero defense units and empty cities. I think they are more of a nuisance factor needing to be mopped up later.

What do others think??

There is a saying, LF, that "well begun is half done." You have gotten the war off to a good start.

Monk,

I attacked with about 20 tanks and 15 vet spies.

What I call 'offensive units' are those with offensive values much higher than defensive ones (such as arty, tanks or cav). My spies spotted only alpine and riflemen inside the Zulu cities: those can do little harm to vet tanks, even turned yellow after attack.

Same with partisans. That is why I wrote about the powerful toothbrushes owned by Stu and Julius. Partisans are not a real threat to tanks, but they need to be 'removed' in order to move freely.

Do we still have the 16 vet spies you attacked with? I only ask because I am tempted by a switch to a money-spinning Aristotalitarian regime. Especially that we have Mike's and loads of money from that.

Is it me to play next? I can't remember the turn order I'm afraid, but I'm nearly up in a couple of games, and thought this might be the one. I'm rubbing my hands together with anticipation of causing havoc in Zululand.

Great work La Fayette, and if it is me next then I shall remember what you've told me and disband the two freights in Cunaxa to build a coastal fortress. That is what you wanted isn't it?

Personally, I am so fond of vet spies that I mostly use celebrating Commie when fighting.

Nice work, La Fayette.

Query: would it have been possible to force a peace treaty in order to prevent the buyback of Zimbabwe?

I dunno.
Perhaps someone who is accustomed to waging war with successive peace treaties would be able to answer that .
Personally, when the choice is offered, I choose celebrating commie (because of the vet spies) and try to strike hard and often. Bribing back communist cities is costly, so it happens quite seldom and it is generally painless because I can take the city back next turn.
What made it painful in this game are those 4 armours of mine that happened to be inside the city: I was compelled to destroy them (since the Zulus were democrats) and didn't enjoy it at all .

Here's what Grigor's plan suggests --
quote:
In one monster turn: Land spies and take out city walls in Hlobane, then occupy with Armor. (UN) Do that first so the Zulus can't force peace. Then do the same with Zimbabwe (Mike's). Use the UN to force peace so Zulus can't retake the cities.

Once you have the UN, the only way they can avoid peace is to refuse your endless chatter.

Well I haven't got either a juicy log or save for you.

I flattened the battery on my laptop on Saturday evening, and now when I turn the machine on (whether by recharged battery or by the mains cable), the screen has gone all screwy, with the resolution on a weird setting. All of the icons on the desktop are enormous, and it only shows a tiny part of the screen whenever I try to open a programme.
This does not make for good civving I'm afraid.
O n S is quite welcome to jump in and play some turns while I work out how to fix this problem (no matter what I do with the settings on control panel, the screen resets whenever I restart it ), which may take all weekend.

Sounds as if you will need to reflash your BIOS - nasty

While you are at it - replace the battery on the MoBo - this should not have happened - of course - and the only explanation I can come up with is that the MoBo battery also discharged completely.

Isn't this beasty brand new? If so make yourself a pain to the supplier (I have a vague recollection of your mentioning Mesh) - they have been very good to me in the past.

Good luck, Stu

Tired of ads?

The Sivs are about even with techs, and moderate in power -- but we’re kind of strung out, so our moderate rating is somewhat illusionary. Rather than pressing forward right away, we may want to pause & refresh.

As per the recommendation, we sell some infrastructure -- police Stations in Mpondo & Zim; Unis in Hlobane & Intombe, and a Col in Ulundi. -- finances are now close to the Zulus, so we may be OK.

1896 (0) -- move a number of troops, RB a barracks in Mizzen to help ward off the Mongol invaders. Switch a clerk to an Einstein -- & opt for Robotics over AF, NP, Recyc.

1897 (1) -- Oil (d) Arch to Hlobane = 166. hmmm not so exciting, so we’ll wait on the other truck. RB shields towards tanks (but keep in mind to maintain some sort of fiscal balance.) Clean up some partisans & heal tanks.

1898 (2) -- (Chinese start SETI) Mizzen completes market, is now size 3 (and the source of a remaining truck, so we want it to grow…but the nearby threatening Mongols will need to be dealt with. Clean up some more units -- mostly parts, but a cav & marine as well.

1899 (3) -- Chinese discover Recyc.; Carts lose four tanks, but slay one of ours. Become Democracy -- deliver Mizzen truck (gold, demanded) to Intombe for 288 coins (better, but needs work) buy offshores for Scylla and Troy. Found Near the End (and complete rail to it -- helps the ship chain pressure.) Deliver a couple of trucks from east to west for 125 & 130 and Silk (d) from the Institute to Mpondo for 440 -- now that’s more like it.

1900 (4) -- (Zulus nail an empty transport; we get a couple of wounds on two Alpines as an enemy marine and tank choose to die.) We love in 19 cities.

1901 (5) -- Chinese discover NP (that’s a tech per 5 turns, not that anyone is counting. Gaaahhhh! Mongols take Scylla! Senate signs an immediate peace treaty! Gobs of units roll into the city (and our lands fill with angry partisans -- oh yes we get two, count ‘em two of them.) Pop = 9M drop off two demanded gold trucks (Cyc to Zim for 364 and Char to Crem for 244.)

1902 (6) -- (Lose a tank to Carts two tanks & a Zulu marine) Pop = 10M Hmmmmm a tough choice, but we bite down the bitter taste. Buy back Scylla for 1001 coins (out of our treasury of 1023) and collect four marines, a cannon, alpine, transport & cav, with some infrastructure still intact. Our rep takes a hit (now poor) and the Senate falls -- so much for the growth plan. we force peace with the Mongols (and while we’re at it, talk to the Spanish & have peace with them as well.)

1903 (7) -- (Zulus bribe a Jeep of ours -- well, we did draw down the treasury. Carts and Mongols trade Cunaxa back & forth twice each! Chinese discover Robotics -- we try to talk with them but they’re hostile.) Go Fundy (yes, we were going to go there eventually…) Hmmmm Spain offers 500 for us to go to war with the Mongols…Hmmmm -- very tempting, but we decline (For now -- there is a Mongol marine hanging out next to one of our smaller central cities that is the last of a small time invasion a couple of turns ago -- we beat back the other marine & killed the cannon & cavalry that assaulted the town, but haven’t done too much since then.) We love in ten cities. Deliver three trucks from west to central for values of 171, 174 & 180.

Saved the game.

Notes -- the units in the Zulu theatre (as well as the boat chain from Near the End westward) have yet to move, so choices are open. The Carts are there in the thick of things, allied with the Zulus, helping to get in the way -- we may want to smack a few, the force peace then take out a couple of cities. Or we could force peace & go around them allowing them to help impede partisan growth.

Should get howies next turn, although a trade with China would allow an extra tech. There is a boat with five Scylla units (former Mongols) asail aiming for Zulu lands, otherwise the transports should be empty. Iirc, Mizzen should generate a uranium truck next turn, so we may want to grow an airport there & another in the west for a great trade payoff.

Plenty of war left for DoY and SG[1].

That depends upon the state of enemy railroads though. I'll let Stu in here, because I think I've fixed my laptop but am not sure if it'll last because I didn't have too long to do it last night. I think it's OK, but don't want to hold the game up all weekend if it isn't.
Mind you, if Stu could get the turns played today (no pressure ) then I'll take the save home and return with it on Monday. Hopefully.

Good turns O n S. Shame about the Mongol capture of Scylla, but we got quite a few bonus troops out of it. Is the ship chain still intact?

The ship chain is in three parts -- East to central is Ok with a spare boat (recalled a couple from the south)

From Near the End to Zulu is Ok & yet to move this turn.

From central to west might be Ok, I think that there was a space off & was glitched , thus the boat with units still at sea. Central area also has a truck looking for a boat, so we might want to have some contingency there as well.

Note that we'll need to keep about 500-1000 coins in the treasury to deter bribes -- when I bought the city, the Zulus stepped in & bought one of our fine Jeeps.
