Well, I'm finally running for Consul. While I've certainly desired to run for the office before, this is the first opportunity where I have both the time to fulfill the responsibilities of the office and I won't (if successful) be dislodging someone from the office that I felt had done a perfectly good job and didn't need to be removed.
I was certainly tempted to run when the game started and I know a number of you asked me to do so at that time, but I simply didn't have the time myself. Having established that I know when I don't feel I can fulfill the time commitment and turning down the chance to run, you can have confidence that I would not be running this time unless I was entirely serious.
As many of you know, I have twice before served as an acting or "Deputy" Consul for temporarily absent Consul and I am thankful for those opportunities. I would now like the opportunity to become a full Consul myself, as was my intention when I used those experiences as chances to learn how the organization system here worked differently than my previous executive experiences and how I might help to improve it myself.
As for what I would bring to the job, I believe I have done a good job as an executive the previous times this community (the SPDG and the ISDG) has given me the opportunity before and I'd like to take the opportunity to now serve you as Consul. I would think that my record demonstrates that I have acted fairly and responsibly in such positions and that, above all, while I certainly am one to encourage debate and discussion and I certainly will push my own viewpoint, I have shown repeatedly in the past that I ardently work toward transparency in government operation and the defense of popular will and the rules. There are, of course, some decisions I'm willing to make because I have been entrusted to make them on behalf of others. That said, I will admit that my instincts are probably tilted a bit more toward allowing additional discussion and debate where necessary rather than making overly hasty decisions on my own.
One thing that I am certainly attached to when it comes to government in democracy games is transparency. Without transparency in what government is doing and why, a "democracy" quickly devolves. My commitment to ensuring that the membership of the game knows and understands what its elected leaders are doing and why can be seen rather plainly in my record. For reference, I will link you to threads where this has been demonstrated:

The thread I think that might be the most useful for those looking at this race is the following:

I remain, to this day, touched by what donegeal said about me in that thread. My apologies for not running last time.
As for my stance on the spying part of potential cheating in this game and where that issue went when the game started, I'd like to link you to the thread where this team was finally brought to fruition by the good work on Beta and where early discussion from the U.N. was discussed. I remain thankful for what Beta and MrWIA said in that thread:

Finally, as a parting note for this campaign statement, I'd like to link you to the last "speech" thread I did at the outset of this great war as an attempt at inspiration. Let it not be forgotten that despite the recent potential cheating flap, what was said in that thread remains true and you, the people, have done much to overcome the challenges we have faced together.

Thank you and it is my hope that you vote for me for Consul.

ok, some props to both candidates:
Trip, you have been here from the start, your dedication to this team has been undeniable, and your habit of getting involved in every aspect of the game is, aside from a few occassional intrusions, is very beneficial to the team. I think you are probably the most valuable "all rounder" team member that we have, and I don´t know what we would do without you. Frankly you truly deserve to be a consul, and best of luck if you win this time, and if not, don¨t be afraid to do so later once the war is over and people don¨t have excuses to vote for others (like abandoning the MoW job)
Arnelos, what can I say, I am very fortunate to have gotten to know you rather well thanks to the chat since you came back and there are really few other people who I respect as much as you. You quickly have made up all the absent time by being very active during these past months, and I do not doubt for an instant that you would make a fantastic consul. Fortunately, your greatest personal flaw, being a Republican, has no effect whatsoever around here... ;lol;
Good luck to both of you, and to be honest, I don´t know who to vote for since you both are great.

AWOL means Absent With Out Leave. Which means that I'm saying appointing a deputy is fine, if you do so during those times. But, I'm refering to the fact that you have gone missing without giving advance notice that you were leaving or would be without contact with the Apolyton Forums for a certain period of time. Even if you have connection issues, you should still find a way to send a email or make a phone call to let someone know about your absence.
You were recently absent from the RP team and people were asking about where you had disapeared to. Same thing came up in the chat room for the ISDG. Your position in RP was/is an important one and we missed you there. I just want assurances that things like that won't be a regular occurance for you. I'm not questioning your ability to be a Consul, just your ability to be here. If you say that you can take care of that concern, then I believe you. |

That said, it is certainly my hope that I won't have any particularly troubling connection issues and having a position such as Consul will certainly put the impetus on me to make sure that someone is contacted if I do (I can borrow a friend's machine to send an e-mail if necessary).

That's really all I can do if it comes up. What I'm saying is that I'll do my best to do this in the future should I have an issue. When it came to the RP Team issue, since Togas was already back and had posted that he was taking charge again, I honestly didn't figure my constant 24/7 presence was any longer necessary and RP Team could handle itself under Togas' capable leadership while whatever connection issue I had lasted. If I'd actually been the acting head of state at the time, I would have certainly tried to get an e-mail to Togas about it, something I have done before when I lost internet access during my apartment move during the summer.
If I'm Consul, that position certainly dictates that if I have a connection problem, I'll do what I can to find a friend's computer I can send an e-mail over. I'll do my best should it come up.
