Consul Election Campaign Thread Support Apolyton, buy Civilization 2

Well, I'm not big on politics or speeches or anything else like that so I'll keep this brief.

You all know what I'm capable of doing and how active I am with this team. I have put a great amount of time and effort towards my position as MOW and am now willing to do so as a consul.

My promise is to continue my work for this team as diligently and with as much effort as I've put forth previously. I will always do what I can in the interests of the team even if it should be against what I personally want (though I will, of course, fight for my position to try and convince the team to agree with it).

With Aggie able to take over the MOW you shouldn't worry about that office. He's done a fine job in the SPDG and the PTWDG so things will be in good hands should I be elected.

Thanks everyone, see you in the election.

Let us say an issue comes up where you hold one POV on what should be done that is completely obvious to you, yet many other team members disagree and suggest another course of action. If you were the only Consul around to play, what would you do?

I've always been a proponent of team choice. If the team decides something, then that is what should happen regardless of what any individuals believe.

Of course, this is only to be the case when those on the team weighing their opinions in are well-informed and up-to-date. For example, if an unknown issue arises after a poll completes then the team did not make an informed choice and things should be delayed until the issue can be further addressed.

Well, I'm finally running for Consul. While I've certainly desired to run for the office before, this is the first opportunity where I have both the time to fulfill the responsibilities of the office and I won't (if successful) be dislodging someone from the office that I felt had done a perfectly good job and didn't need to be removed.

I was certainly tempted to run when the game started and I know a number of you asked me to do so at that time, but I simply didn't have the time myself. Having established that I know when I don't feel I can fulfill the time commitment and turning down the chance to run, you can have confidence that I would not be running this time unless I was entirely serious.

As many of you know, I have twice before served as an acting or "Deputy" Consul for temporarily absent Consul and I am thankful for those opportunities. I would now like the opportunity to become a full Consul myself, as was my intention when I used those experiences as chances to learn how the organization system here worked differently than my previous executive experiences and how I might help to improve it myself.

As for what I would bring to the job, I believe I have done a good job as an executive the previous times this community (the SPDG and the ISDG) has given me the opportunity before and I'd like to take the opportunity to now serve you as Consul. I would think that my record demonstrates that I have acted fairly and responsibly in such positions and that, above all, while I certainly am one to encourage debate and discussion and I certainly will push my own viewpoint, I have shown repeatedly in the past that I ardently work toward transparency in government operation and the defense of popular will and the rules. There are, of course, some decisions I'm willing to make because I have been entrusted to make them on behalf of others. That said, I will admit that my instincts are probably tilted a bit more toward allowing additional discussion and debate where necessary rather than making overly hasty decisions on my own.

One thing that I am certainly attached to when it comes to government in democracy games is transparency. Without transparency in what government is doing and why, a "democracy" quickly devolves. My commitment to ensuring that the membership of the game knows and understands what its elected leaders are doing and why can be seen rather plainly in my record. For reference, I will link you to threads where this has been demonstrated:

As Acting Consul for NYE's absense (please note my turn log):

My first report as FAM of the SPDG (December 2002):

The thread I think that might be the most useful for those looking at this race is the following:
http://www.apolyton.com/forums/show...?threadid=75907
I remain, to this day, touched by what donegeal said about me in that thread. My apologies for not running last time.

As for my stance on the spying part of potential cheating in this game and where that issue went when the game started, I'd like to link you to the thread where this team was finally brought to fruition by the good work on Beta and where early discussion from the U.N. was discussed. I remain thankful for what Beta and MrWIA said in that thread:
http://www.apolyton.com/forums/show...30&pagenumber=4

Finally, as a parting note for this campaign statement, I'd like to link you to the last "speech" thread I did at the outset of this great war as an attempt at inspiration. Let it not be forgotten that despite the recent potential cheating flap, what was said in that thread remains true and you, the people, have done much to overcome the challenges we have faced together.
http://www.apolyton.com/forums/show...?threadid=97990

Thank you and it is my hope that you vote for me for Consul.

Unfortunately for some of us, what Trip said is true. :/

Please do not let the status of the MoW effect this campaign. Aggie would enjoy my full faith as MoW, and I would only be too pleased to submit his name to the people for approval.

I have worked with Aggie during the SPDG, first while he was SMC and later as I was SMC and he was my deputy. I have full faith in his abilities and the MoI would support any thing that he would need (as we have supported the current MoW) while he is in his office.

I would like to say, that because Aggie would very likely be our next MoW (if Trip does win), that that does NOT preclude anyone of us from becoming Vices/Deputies under either of their leadership. An Active democracy means a winning team!!

Trip told me in chat recently one of the reasons he feels he can run for Consul now is that the military operations are winding up. Although we have not won the war yet, we have such a SOD and GCA is so feeble to all reports that we need fear little. I daresay he would even help out with military planning?

This is nearly the perfect time really, for a new MoW to step in. This person will face a fairly easy job, and would by any means be helped (or hindered? ) considerably by the Consuls. Once the war is over, there would be plenty of time to settle into the role, as the fireworks will have gone.

When voting, I will not consider the Ministry of War an issue. I will vote on who I believe would be the best person to have as Consul for us now.

Quite true. And I'm sure he would make a fine MoW.

Having said that, they got around us because we screwed up (leaving Toledo2 open. That still pisses me off), and because they were using Riders. Best freaking unit in the game.

Thank you for your words of support, it always is nice to be so complimented. Let me assure you that if Trip is elected, I will do my best to assure our continued success in military matters. Additionally due to the PTWDG I have an intimate understanding of riders(to be honest after all these months I am practically sick of riders). Since this is the UU of our soon to be neighbor, I feel especially qualified to lead our armies against CFC, be it in a defensive posture during peacetime or on the offense in war. This would be the second time I have taken over the military following in the footsteps of a legend, I am sure that this time would be even more glorious than the last.

Well, I've had my dealings with Aggie as another member of the cabinet in the SPDG several times myself, both good and bad. I will say that I fully support Aggie should he become Minister of War. I don't think there's any question of his competence for the demands of the position and I retain a rather large degree of respect for Aggie.

So no, Trip giving up the Minister of War position should not be an issue. I'd rather not win this election merely because people decided Trip shouldn't leave his old position.

Rather, you should vote for me because I'd make a good Consul.

The times I have gone absent have been primarily caused either by RL concerns, for which I can easily appoint a Deputy Consul as you have done (and that person was me), and connection issues (which are not under my control). Of course, everyone suffers connection issues every now and then and that's part of why we have three consuls instead of only one executive. Even when a minister such as Togas has had connection issues, we've had a deputy to fill in for him.

That said, it is certainly my hope that I won't have any particularly troubling connection issues and having a position such as Consul will certainly put the impetus on me to make sure that someone is contacted if I do (I can borrow a friend's machine to send an e-mail if necessary).

As for RL concerns, there aren't very many right now. This is the optimal time of year for me to hold a position like this because the election cycle in the United States just ended and while I'm currently working as a student, I won't be all that politically involved as long as I remain in Arizona for some time to come. I should be available to commit the necessary time to the position during the term.

I hope that answers the question.

AWOL means Absent With Out Leave. Which means that I'm saying appointing a deputy is fine, if you do so during those times. But, I'm refering to the fact that you have gone missing without giving advance notice that you were leaving or would be without contact with the Apolyton Forums for a certain period of time. Even if you have connection issues, you should still find a way to send a email or make a phone call to let someone know about your absence.

You were recently absent from the RP team and people were asking about where you had disapeared to. Same thing came up in the chat room for the ISDG. Your position in RP was/is an important one and we missed you there. I just want assurances that things like that won't be a regular occurance for you. I'm not questioning your ability to be a Consul, just your ability to be here. If you say that you can take care of that concern, then I believe you.

ok, some props to both candidates:

Trip, you have been here from the start, your dedication to this team has been undeniable, and your habit of getting involved in every aspect of the game is, aside from a few occassional intrusions, is very beneficial to the team. I think you are probably the most valuable "all rounder" team member that we have, and I don´t know what we would do without you. Frankly you truly deserve to be a consul, and best of luck if you win this time, and if not, don¨t be afraid to do so later once the war is over and people don¨t have excuses to vote for others (like abandoning the MoW job)

Arnelos, what can I say, I am very fortunate to have gotten to know you rather well thanks to the chat since you came back and there are really few other people who I respect as much as you. You quickly have made up all the absent time by being very active during these past months, and I do not doubt for an instant that you would make a fantastic consul. Fortunately, your greatest personal flaw, being a Republican, has no effect whatsoever around here... ;lol;

Good luck to both of you, and to be honest, I don´t know who to vote for since you both are great.

That's really all I can do if it comes up. What I'm saying is that I'll do my best to do this in the future should I have an issue. When it came to the RP Team issue, since Togas was already back and had posted that he was taking charge again, I honestly didn't figure my constant 24/7 presence was any longer necessary and RP Team could handle itself under Togas' capable leadership while whatever connection issue I had lasted. If I'd actually been the acting head of state at the time, I would have certainly tried to get an e-mail to Togas about it, something I have done before when I lost internet access during my apartment move during the summer.

If I'm Consul, that position certainly dictates that if I have a connection problem, I'll do what I can to find a friend's computer I can send an e-mail over. I'll do my best should it come up.

Slap Master Zen with a large trout?

Look, I'll be completely honest: Given that CGN, ourselves, and even Mongoose have severe difficulty getting any response from GWT, I'm not entirely sure how any candidate running for Consul is to be expected to have a magical solution to this problem.

I have confidence that Master Zen is doing everything he reasonably can to contact GWT. The fault does not lie with Master Zen in this matter, it lies with GWT's lack of responsiveness. The fact that this is true for more teams than merely our own should be reason not to fault Master Zen or anyone at Apolyton with the problem.

If MZ wants help, I'm sure any of us with time would be more than willing to provide it. As it is, I think he's doing everything he can already.

I'm currently taking German as well. I'm not very good at German, but I'm currently learning.

That said, the extent of English instruction in the German school system is extensive to say the least. It's a near guarantee that the members of the GWT team will know English better than I or likely another American will know German.
