It's just that I was worried, because, as I said, I'm still doing Chapter 3, but the number of days I've got is already past that used by the save game you get with BGI, for those who only want to play ToSC. I've never loaded this game, but assume that the BGI quests are all finished, but you can still explore the newer areas from ToSC. What level should I go to Durlag's Tower at? It's the only area I haven't visited in the bottom half of the map, for obvious reasons.

Now that's what I thought!

So you don't reckon that level 5 characters would make it out alive?

If anyone wants a challenge, then try to make it through the game without levelling your character(s) up.

I'm fairly sure that if you import charachters from BGI to BGII you can set them to any kit you wish of their previous class. This does mean that there are a couple of classes (Barbarian, and maybe Wild Mage?) that you can't play right through both games, but it's pretty flexible.

You can play these characters through them both with TUTU, but since you don't get them at the start of BGI, then you can't export them to BGII.

From what I remember - and what I have experienced:
What you keep:
- basic class
- Stats
- HP
- XP (levels)
- known spells (I'm not 100% sure of this one...)
- misc: Race/Gender/...

What you have to re-define:
- Weapon proficiencies
- Class Specialization (*)

What you lose:
- all your equipment.

(*) A Fighter cannot become a Ranger or a Paladin, but each basic class has access to the special Kits.
Now, a note on my experience with dual-class character:
In BG1, I had a Fighter (pure class) dualed with an Invoker.
This is no more possible in BG2, but it accept it other way round:
For my 1st class (Fighter), I had the possibility to specialize it (Kensai, Berzerk,...), while for my second class (Mage) I had no choice and had to take the basic mage.

Thanks for that explanation.
Really useful. Maybe I should have studied the BGII manual a little better for this kind of information, but I didn't want to spoil the story of BGI.

Almost 100% You lose the spells you know and have to rechoose them, and its possible to keep your gear by pausing the game VERY quickly, before the first cutscene, and dropping everything to the floor. The cutscene itself contains the script that strips your gear.

After the scene is over, pickup everything off the floor. Its not really worth cheating for though, as there is better stuff to be had in the first dungeon.

But how can you drop things when the game is paused? Every time you go to the character "bag" screen, it unpauses the game. This is a major pain in the bum if you are looking for a new weapon or whatever, but realistic enough.

Aha!
I'm glad that you lot are here to tell me things like that before I play BG2, because it would be a lot more frenetic if I hadn't known that. I always play with my right hand on the mouse, and my left on the spacebar, so that I can pause the instant a fight begins/looks like it might begin/my girlfriend shouts for me, etc.

Although in BGII the game will unpause if you open a container (e.g. bag of holding, scroll case, etc.) in the inventory, which has caused me some surprises in the past...

In BG1 you can get it to pause in inventory by either using TuTu, or by starting the game as a MP game.

Thanks Duckie

Where are you up to in BG1 anyway? Did you find the bandits yet.

If so...

LET THEM TALK!

Its possible to get a game-ending bug if you kill the talking bandits before they can say their lines. Don't use the "Silence 15" Radius" trick that worked so well on the assassin in Nashkell.

Otherwise you'll never get to the next chapter.

Got spare money?

Thanks for that Jamski. I haven't gone north yet, and doubt that I'll be playing much this coming weekend as the in-laws descend upon the ducal manor. again.
In fact, my progress will be much slower than before because I have to revise for the June exams for my night classes (grr... another thing taking up valuable gaming time), but the broad expanses of time after the exams look to be full of excellent opportunities for a keen gamer. Except "school" starts again in September, the weather will be nicer and my girlfriend will want to go on more walks and there's a feast of football coming up!

Now why the hell would you want to keep a crummy pair of pantaloons?

If I export my PC to BGII, then will I ever need the BGI discs to play through BGII? I wouldn't have thought that they'd be necessary, once your PC has been transferred, but I was going to lend BGI to my friend and didn't want to keep having to go around and ask to have one of the disks while playing BGII.
(His PC is old, and should handle BGI, but I'm not sure about BGII, so he won't get that. Besides, he has a lot more gaming time than I do, and will have finished BGI a long time before I finish BGII. Still don't know if I'll finish before Euro 2004 though)

No.
All you need are the character files (and/or the saved games ?).
IIRC, at the end of BG1, when the quest is over, the game will make an automatic save of all characters of the group.
Keep those automatic saved chars (and maybe make some copies of them).
If you want to export your character(s) to different games (BG2, IceWind Dale,...), those games will agree to import your character(s) from those files.
What I do not know is is what happen to those files once they have done this. Therefore the copies... in case of.

Oh, BTW, one more word about the XPs, in BG2, the minimum to start is 89,000. If your char has more, very good, if he has less, he will be boosted to 89,000.

After finishing tosc, your char has 'bout 160000 XP. It doesn't matter though because the game will be slightly harder... Not that the first dungeon is 'tough' tho

I had a quick half-hour shot last night, and just did the Firewire Bridge. It was a pain in the bum, because I arrived from the south and had to walk all the way around to reach the bridge itself. That ogre mage was also quite hard. He got some kind of giant spherical shield around him, and started firing Melf's Acid Arrow at me. That's a nice spell. I picked up some nice stuff from him though, and Minsc is now equipped with the gauntlets of low THACO or whatever they're called from the gobby bloke to the east. Having explored the Firewire Bridge then I may go to the USB Hub next.

Put an end to popups!

Yes, but I got bored of killing infinite identical kobolds and then just left without exploring too far in.
Besides, it seemed to be the same dungeon I'd already entered when I visited Gullykin, so I'm not too worried about going back. It's not as if the exp is worth the hassle.

I'm afraid that my geek knowledge consists of reading the science & technology supplement in the Grauniad each week and then using the rest of the week profitably to forget all I've learned.
I don't even know what a hub is.
It's all geek to me.
