is that a flat 40% chance independent of unit strengths, city walls, ... ?

AFAIK it is independant. Its in const.txt:

ASSAULT_KILL_POP_CHANCE 0.4

Paul, it was a big deal for me to beat you just the once (we played three or four times?).. And in the game where I was taking your cities, you just blanked me totally on a continuation.. I don't know whether I would have won, but I have to say you left me to assume that you THOUGHT I could win, and as such refused to continue.
I played Yoda once, and got the distinct impression I would have no chance whatsoever of beating him. Filix, I played, and he is a great opponent and prepared to spend time analysing the result.
I do not feel confident to play against certain people now, although my on line game seems to be pretty good. I think I simply do not know most people, and well frankly do not trust their integrity, which is a shame. I prefer to play the straight forward unmodded game with no cracks, no cheats and well since I know and have seen demonstrated what people CAN do, I am lead to assume some people WILL do..

I know Gav...
Sometimes in a game..you see things that make you ponder how could that be possible
Like when playing Blackice one day..he is a great player BUT well..er.um..he had some units that I never could build or research
Is this possible..
Then i am thinking..maybe this is some sort of new system in Canada
Canadian Armed Nuclear Unmanned Covert Killall or something..C.A.N.U.C.K. for short
Ok..just a little humor..now next game i probably WILL SEE THIS UNIT!!
OK..i'LL BE GOOD NOW!
Peace

I am not sure who banned him quinns, the reason would be for suggesting that Paulno1 did not quite tell the truth, and well I remember Paulno1 saying he did ramp, then denied it afterwards.. This is not a libelous comment, as it actually was said which is the irritating thing. Now I have just repeated something I know to be true do I get banned too??
I am irritated by this whole debacle, and maybe chance should be given to clear it up?
Paulno1, do you accept that in old Gameleague days you used to rush buy switch , and never told your opponents?
Was it you that discovered ramping? Or who told you?
I had a save on my old computer of a game with Paul (and several other players) which showed Paul ramping.. I wish I had it now. We all know this happened in the past, and I do hope thats what it is the past..
I have seen in action a game breaker, SPECIFICALLY written by someone to cheat at CTP.. It was written not for Esoteric reasons, but to cheat.. It is when used difficult to detect, I wonder who it is that was using it.. For sure someone was..

I'm beginning to get irritated with Paulno1 (a.k.a. Paul). I don't know how many times that I have defended him here on this forum and elsewhere. I'm getting sick of it.

Apologies Dimytes.. BUT I did consider it strategy, the way people play by the rules, or otherwise is part of the strategy people use. Point taken however..
Okay strategy..
When do people consider it time to build caravans?? Considering they have a lengthy construction time, and can interfere with civ growth and development?
My suggestion is as follows.. A Settler churn to around 25 cities is necessary, using ships and warriors to locate best sites for new cities, looking for double and triple monos.. After a city has built a granary and an aquaduct (and nothing else) I place city onto Caravan churn until Mills.. I usually in this time have 4 or 5 double monos available, and carefully make sure I have trade goods in other cities to complete that Mono. I let (apart from early cities) trade cities grow with no more than one settler out. If a city has less than four turns to out a Caravan when I get Mills, then I build the Mill after that Caravan, otherwise it is straight to Mills. I max prod (still allowing some growth) in the Mill cities. My science at Mills, it usually around 1,000, and raises to around 1,300 when I complete any unbuilt markets and banks.. I ALWAYS go for Banks before Mills, as it gives me sufficient gold to start purchasing things when I really NEED to. I build a few ships, and have Commie as my Factories are coming out.. Then it is war.. Always war.. Kill crush and destroy.
PBEM pollutes your game, it makes you play differently.. Don't think so much.. I goosed up a game with Mathemamagician this way. But two games against Blackice online have put me right.. I kept it Basic, I did not alter my overall Strategy for external pressures (like my trade cities being bombarded by SOLS) .

what did you goose up in our game, gav ?
i think you are being too generic in the game setting assumptions here.
what if you have a few goods world ? you would need to spread out with the ship/warrior/settler strategy way too far to defend yourself in order to get all the trade goods you want.
what if you play on a small world ? have a strong AI neighbor who is hassling you on one side, wide unexplored ocean on the other ?
okay, lets keep it to the settings of our game: gigantic world, peaceful exploration, many trade goods.
as for caravans, i build them after aqueducts too, IF i dont have mills yet. if i do, however, i usually build the mills first. i try to build one trade center (at least double mono) up early though.
if i find a triple mono and have already expanded a bit, i build this city up as a trade center immediately. if it is a trade good on terrain where i can build medium fisheries or farms and i have those, i maximize food in this city with infrastructure and start building marketplace and then bank right away, no granary, aqueduct, mill or settler. those buildings come later, triple trade cities never build settlers.
as for bank, i try to get the maximum out of the ultra-efficient warrior unit, so i go to bureaucracy (and thus banking) rather late. the more warriors you have for scouting and emergency defense versus barbarians, the less other military you need early on, thus more ressources for expansion.
another little thing: in cities with few food tiles, but rather mountain with trade good or such, i sometimes build aqueduct before granary to speed up the total growth effect. the granary will usually be finished before the city grows anyway.
for example if you really want one city location, which will allow the city to grow once you can cut the forest and build farms size 2 with AR, but where the city wont grow before that, this is the way.
another strategy that im exploring currently, is to set 2 or 3 cities at the late stage of the theocracy expansion phase to grow and build research buildings. later on these can give you some extra science.
basically, the key is adaption and diversification, as opposed to what my friend Dimytes seems to prefer.

finally my MP game works.
thanks blackice !
now if you could help me figure out how to play over LAN.
playing with Gavrushka, Blackice and Azrael yesterday night.
i learned something called "pathtracking". if you have a ship with an active unit aboard and drag the mouse cursor into unexplored area, you will see a short green line if the cursor passes over land, instead of the usual yellow line.
this way you can spot land more easily. not the size of it though, as there will always be just one green line element.
no wonder these guys prefer to play newbies like me on all-ocean worlds. LOL
still i cant wait to see how this game goes on. got a slight lead in PG over Gav.

Myself, Stephan and Ice feel a little disappointed. |
Gav, i asked 3 times during the game whether we were going to use it as this game was one of multiple restarts of a game where we originally agreed to use it.
i got no clear answer whatsoever that we did NOT use it. only "i dont care. i wont use it."
thats why i clearly said "i will use it unless someone objects". still no one objected, so i used it.
i expected exactly this to happen. thats why i bugged you so long with asking. if you want someone to stick to a rule you should state that rule when specifically asked about it and not just ignore the question.
if you feel disappointed, please not about me.
