Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Is there any way to break into chests and drawers in houses and such without getting caught by the guards?

Killing guards isn't my idea of fun. I want to steal and not get caught. But you can't remain in stealth mode and open a container.

And reloading. Lots of reloading. I did that in Beregost. Save, enter house, nick something. If guards appear then you can go back to the save, and if they don't, save again and move onto the next thing you want.

I'm not that desperate for gold anyways.

Like I said before. My last game I had a reputation of 6, and at the end I had over 300,000 gold. There really isn't that many cool items to buy in this game.

unless I missed some really cool merchant.

at first I used to think you can steal if no one is in the house. That does appear to be the case. Sometimes you can steal, but if someone walks into the room- the guards are summoned. Some of the houses that have quest specific characters you can steal from and they never call the guards it seems.

Why don't you run BGconfig and turn the game speed up from 30 to 45 or even 60, if time is an issue? I always play BG1 on 60 (i.e. double speed) and the other IE games on 45. Otherwise you spend a lot of time watching your guys walking slowly

You know Jamski... that tip might just actually make BG1 worth playing again

Tired of ads?

or just play the tutu mod.

I like it, though it disregarded the ease of use mod. Now I don't get max Hitpoints on level up (saves a lot of reloading ). I did install the tutu tweak mod, but that doesn't seem to have the option for max hp on level up. but it does give me large arrow stacks

And if you're playing on a higher difficulty then you can lower it when you level up just to get max HP, and then raise it again afterwards.

There's no reason not to do all or most of the quests, Tass. More quests equals more EXP, more cash and more items.

Stats can be anything you want. Its pretty easy to boost them in-game. You can get CHA, STR, CON and DEX to 18 or higher withou any problem. Decent stats would be to get at least natural 16s in your main stats and DEX so you don't die before you can get the überw00t gear.

As for Wild Mages - good if you like to laugh and then reload a lot...

Ah - so you're more interested in the ORDER of the quests, eh?

I'd say do the Circus Tent, the Copper Coronet, and the Slavers as a warm up.

Then do the Sir Sarles quest - easy exp, no fighting.

The go to the docks and do the Harpers and the Thieves guild crap.

Then the Bridge murders, and get the Haer Darlis quest.

Go to the sewers, fight the party and rescue Haer - don't get the reward yet!!!

Then head to Trademeet, do the quests there and finish the bridge murders there.

Then you're probably tough enough for getting the second Haer Darlis quest.

After that there's the Unseeing eye, Planar Prison, Firkraag, Umar Hills and Nalia's Keep. They're to be done in any order, really. Probably Firkraag and Unseeing Eye last.

Then go to the Thieves or Bhodi and do the Chapter concluding quests.

Then the quests come in order really after that.

As for raising stats...

Girdle of X Giant Strength - sets STR to 19 or more while worn.
Gauntlets of Ogre STR - sets STR to 18/00
Ring of Human Influance - sets CHA to 18
Gauntlets of Dexterity - sets DEX to 18
Girdle of ummm... err... - sets CON to 18 for 8 hours, once per day. (so always use after resting)
INT and WIS are harder to boost - but have less effect on the game.

And wild mages are too unreliable.
They can accidentally kill the whole party at any moment.

I actually recommend a Dexterity of 18. There are only one gauntlet of dexterity. You should give it to Keldorn or somebody. A dext of 18 gives you a much better AC.

If I'm a fighter type, I reroll until my first 3 (str, dext, const) are all 18. The rest don't matter. Except maybe charisma for a paladin (but it won't go below 17 anyways). Try not to get your intelligence too low. There's a certain monster who will eat your brains.

I think at the very end of the game there are a few wisdom checks. I'm not sure. But that's only at the very end.

As for a cleric. Try to get dexterity and wisdom to 18. Try to get a decent strength and constitution.

For a mage dexterity and Intelligence should be 18. Try to get a halfway decent strenght so you can carry more than a few scrolls

For a thief. You dexterity should be 18. Try to get your strength and constitution to 18 as well.

Don't worry about charisma too much. There is something to help you out there. But it does occupy a ring slot. But if you're a bard or Paladin, maybe you could up your char. to 18 and use that ring slot for something else.

as for quests. Jamski has Nalia's keep very late. That is one of the easier "out-of-town" quests. The rest are more difficult.

So it may be easier to stay in-town for a little while until you are level 10 or so. some in-town quests can be a little difficult like the planar sphere. And I think Jamksi mentioned the second part of that bard quest thingy. I think you have to fight some nasty demons and such.

Oh - I always have Improved Tor'Gal installed - I forget that he's quite do-able normally... but get some good fire/acid weapons first...

As for having perfect 18's - don't worry about it. None of the NPCs who join you have perfect stats, and they don't seem to die from it. As often stated, I have won games with the MINIMUM stats There's not a great difference between a 16 and an 18 anyway. +1 to hit with arrows, -1 to AC... big wow

Straight mage is what I played teh first time, and it was great fun. Remember to get a familar, and carry him in your pack at all times.

yeah but if you can get 18's, why not get them?

Getting 18 in 3 stats doesn't take much rerolling. It's a little harder for a Paladin. But I managed to get the big 3 up to 18 and my charisma 17 (this was in BG1 tutu)

It's in 3rd edition rules you have to make the choices to go with 16's.

Suffering from ads?

Paladins have always had hard stat requirements. In 3e even more so. They need good STR and CON, as they'll be fighting, an OK DEX, even in 3e, because you still need it for the good combat feats like WWA, an ok INT to get those talking skills a Paladin needs as the party leader, a WIS of at least 14 to cast those Paladin spells, and a CHA as high as you can get it, as the special abilites need CHA to work. Owch. You can't do it with point-buy.

STR 16
DEX 15
CON 16
INT 12
WIS 14
CHA 18

Try getting those stats

Full PM-box? Change here!

I've been able to roll 18-18-18-12-18-18 before without too much trouble.

Also, BG1 allows you to have completely awesome clerics since you can raise Wis to 21 without too much effort. All 3 of the books are fairly easy to obtain and only 1 is really out of the way at all.
