I think you can get the ogre power guantlet's fairly early, but can't remember. You can get the eagle bow fairly quickly once you reach Baldur's Gate. Coran-Kivan-Imoen make the best team. Just have all of them hide in the shadows, go somewhere, and fire away. It can really make short work of even high level guys.

Well I'm in Baldur's Gate but have only done a few quests. I'm going to try to do as much as possible there because Imoen needs the experience to be a better wizard so if I talk to everyone and break into as many houses as I can then that ought to pay off.

bah. that's a waste of time- just purchase Tales of the Sword Coast and finish the game with that group- that's what I did

Though for some reason the areas leading to the Big Boss were already empty and cleared.

The **** maze at the end would have been horribly boring if the programmers hadn't 'cleaned' it... and even after being cleaned, it took forever to walk through- (although thanks to jamski, I know know how to speed up the game! )

Well, they didn't make that big a deal about it aside from "it's the maze...ooooo....it's so hard and it's twisty with turns that look like they take you to the end but not and you're like awww **** and have to go back then you do and actually go forward but you think you go back and you're like damn it and sleep for a while and maybe eat something but it's not required and eating isn't really an option only quaffy but anyway you're still in the maze and it's dark and since it's in medieval type setting you can't really change the gamma but you can because you're in modern times and if ya have an elf it doesn't even really matter because of the infravsion but it's still a maze and you can get lost but you won't if you have some rope but that's not handled by the game engine so you can't so you just keep going forward and eventually you get out but in the meantime maybe you can sleep with Safana or whatever her name is since she's pretty hot and shows some clevage and it wouldn't be too hard just to sneak into some corner and have a little fun and you can play doctor especially have some healing potions since you probably have a shitload of them at the end of the game and if you don't there is a cheat code which gives you some free ones along with the green cure poision ones and doesn't green mean something is poisonous, well of course not since Moutain Dew is green and a good way to keep you awake and because of that it'd be a good idea to go fill up a Nalgene bottle with some Moutain Dew before playing this part of the game since you have a nice container with something to drink in it and you'll be set if you have to sit and reload when you get to the final battle since it's kinda tough and if you don't find it tough it might just keep crashing for no apparent reason like it did for me and that was pretty shitty so eventually I gave up but this was only the most recent time I played it not the first so I had beaten it before and knew I could so I just said **** it and go on to Baldur's Gate 2 but anyway it doesn't matter because they did seem to talk about that maze a bit more than they had to"

Wow, a stream-of-(un)consciousness post there.

I may well pay a visit to the sewers because I haven't had a decent scrap in ages, and my characters might forget how or something.
Well, there was the Gorpal Hind incident, which was lots of fun, and quite lucrative too, and the three wizards guarding the "secret items for the head of the thieves' guild" (I can do spoiler-saving too ), but that wasn't much of a fight really.

Put an end to popups!

Entirely out of spoilers, I went back into BG last night after almost a week off, and got into a few fights. I entered a merchants' guild in the far northeast of the city (black and white building ), and was set upon by the watchman and a horde of blink dogs, which were quite cool but not a problem for my party.
I wandered around the fair in the centre of town but there wasn't anyone to talk to so I saved, killed the diviner in the fortune-telling tent, checked my reputation, and moved on.
In the southwest for the first time, I came across an old friend from Cloakwood. Now I have a spoiler question with which I'd like a little help.

spoiler(highlight to read):
I fought loads of doppelgangers in the merchants' guild here, but messed up and then stopped playing as it was getting late. The next time I try this, has anyone got any tips for killing doppelgangers? Are they undead and can I turn them? Will they burn like billyo if I nuke them with the fireball wand I got from the wizards practising upstairs in Sorcerous Supplies? I've also got a lightning wand and an ice wand, so I'm not doing too badly as far as wands are concerned. Couldn't find an eagle bow though, but I didn't have a good look.

Dopplegangers really shouldn't be a problem by now. You will find *loads* more. There is a sword that can help (Bastard Sword, +3 vs Dopplegangers) but apart from that, not really. They're not undead, IIRC, just shapeshifters

I know they shouldn't be a problem, because they weren't that tough, but I ingeniously cast stinking cloud just a tiny bit too close to my party, and it didn't seem to affect the doppelgangers at all. We got poisoned though. And it was only a matter of inches. No fair. I'd imagine that the fight will be easier next time if I don't kick off with that particular manoeuvre.

I was trying to avoid mentioning doppelgangers for anyone perusing the thread who had either never been to the city, or had never played the first BG and fancied it. But since it's all out in the open now then I'm tempted to unspoiler all of my previous posts.

I wouldn't worry, Diss. It was only a joke, and you have to fight them anyway as part of the main plot so it isn't really a spoiler.

I just wasn't worried about spoiling individual monsters. Although this one does have a special talent of concealing themselves. That might be a minor spoiler.

but it's almost like saying there are some orcs you have to fight in this game

Their equivalent are called Gnolls.

Unless Gnolls are meant to be Trolls, which would make sense, with the rhyming, but I think that Trolls are traditionally tougher than the Gnolls are in BG, and less likely to construct a fortress. I also think that those irritating things with the fire arrows (something commandos) are the goblin equivalents - pretty useless on their own, but more dangerous in hordes and at range.
I suppose we'll have to wait for Jam to rediscover this thread since Folderol is down, and he is lurking in the NWN thread at the moment. He may have a better idea.

[edit] They're called kobolds! Thanks, I'll go away now. [/edit]

yes Kobolds and Kobold commandos.

Gnolls have their fortress in the southeast.

there are no Trolls that I know of in BG1. They are indeed much tougher. You'll find out in Baldur's Gate2. But they aren't too bad. Just remember to use fire or acid on them when they are down.

And yes there are Orcs in Baldur's Gate 1.

There are some near the walls of the Friendly Farm Inn. One involves a quest to get some ring back for someone in the Friendly Farm Inn compound.

And aren't the bandits like Tarzok orcs as well? They are part of the main plot. They are up in the bandit camp.

The bandits in the forest (by certain posters' favourite NPC with cleavage ) are humans, and the creatures that you have to fight to get the ring back outside the Friendly Arms are Hobgoblins. In fact, they're all over the map as one of the standard encounters.
