I started to play the training level on Saturday morning, and I have to say that the game looks wonderful, but I wasn't particularly in the mood and went to look around some computer shops en route to the pub.

I've got a lady elf fighter with some feats that I can't remember. Oops. This is a nothing post really I'm afraid, but at least there is no football on this evening so I may well get some gaming in.

Can elves really avoid traps while in full run, Jamski? I played quite some elven characters (at the moment a cleric in the first HotU chapter), and I'm not very impressed by this ability. IMO Keen Senses makes only one Search throw per round and in full run your elf moves farther in the time of a round, than the range of this ability goes. So you still will run into traps on not so rare occasions. To avoid it completely, you have to slow down, e.g. by pressing Shift, and move just as slow as humans would. There still are places, where this ability is useful. For instance, to find secret doors, where a human would need to go into search mode.

On a sidenote, what servers are you guys playing at? I never tried MP, but might like it. Would you give me some startup info?

Well, I avoid them in full run 90% of the time. I mean, everyone stops a bit sometimes to see if there are any monsters round the corner anyway, or to pick up an item. Yes, its great for secret doors, because even if you fail the search check, you still see the dice roll in the txt box so you know its there.

Folderol is 68.50.86.146:5121 and its listed on Gamespy too. There's quite a few from 'poly there, and the server is fixed now *bliss* You'll need the CEP, but doesn't everyone have that anyway?

As for MP, there's three kinds :

Deathmatch - player vs player fights *yawn*
Group adventure - players working though a module together
Persistant world - basically a free MMORPG

I say go with the PW unless you have a group of people you already know, and a module you want to play together.

I don't seek PvP. What I heard about it, is not very attracting. What I look for is a RP heavy PW with some nice quests. I'll try Folderol. I have the CEP, but not yet installed it.

Doesn't it defeat the object if these worlds are so small? I'm not being awkward, I'd just like your opinion on why the NWN persistent world setup is better than playing modules cooperatively say.

???

Where do you HAVE this small idea from?

Like I said, there are more than 2,000 of them. Some are IMMENSE, some are small and most are somewhere inbetween.

Unless you mean small number of players - well most PWs have limits of between 60 and 256 people online at any one given time. I never found that too small.

The PW set up is better than playing a module cooperatively, as you can log in and out at anytime without having to "catch up with the story" and you don't have to try and win or lose the quest
etc. You just play. Also you have to find 3 or 4 people that want to play the same module as you, at the same time, and (very probably) over a number of days or evenings. Its popular, but not very convenient.

A PW is like a forum or a chatroom, except in 3d and with more things to do

Bear with me. Tell me what you do in an evening's play in a standard PW.

Edit: And correct me if I am wrong, but lots of small (or relatively low populated) worlds is different from the standard MMORPG setup right?

And what happens when you die? Also, if you leave because you are busy and come the next day are you at the same point? And what if someone kills the monster? Surely if the world is persistent it wont be there when you get back?

Yes lots of questions I know, but I am considering filling in the last real gap in my MP experience when World of Warcraft comes out. It strikes me that I should perhaps try NWN for free first!

perhaps. there was supposed to be a way to link them, I'm not sure if anyone is using those links.

This paticular one (folderol) doesn't seem small. It seems pretty big.

what do we do? We kill things But it is a social killing program. You can be as in character as you want generally. Although some worlds really can be demanding that you stay in character. Folderol is fairly lenient. Long as you aren't spoiling anyone's fun you are okay.

I'm not real hardcore when I roleplay. But I try not to say things that would seem too out of character.

I can't say much about world of warcraft. I have never played a real mmorpg.

Dying rules differ depending on the server. Some people play with the hardcore rulest. Some servers have bleeding rules.

Folderol in paticular has bleeding rules. Sometimes you can recover from bleeding (assuming a monster isn't still bashing on you). Other times you die unless someone heals you (either spell or healing kit). If you die you have a few options. One is someone can cast raise dead spell, or has a raise dead scroll. The other is to respawn and this will cause you to lose experience. I think the other is just to quit the game . But you still lose experience I think.

I try not to leave when I'm in a dungeon near monsters. They don't really "stay". But these persistant worlds have constantly respawing monsters. I'm not sure what the time interval. Some respawn faster than others.

But you will be at the same point when you leave. So try not to do it in too dangerous an area. But even in dungeons you will find points where monsters aren't respawining.

Most PWs have some kind of unique dying system. Some send you to heaven or hell, and you have to do a task to be reborn, some make you wake up back in the temple, some just force you to lie there dead for 3 or 4 minutes.

Most monsters in PW are spawned when the PC(s) walk on invisible triggers. The trick is placing these so the PC never works out where the trigger points are *winks* and then the go inactive for a set time. In Folderol most "normal" critters are on a 8 minute timer and most bosses on either 30mins or an hour. Loot tends to respawn about every 15 minutes.

One thing to bear in mind - the PWs of NWN are NOT designed, created, maintained or run by the creators of NWN. They are ALL fan-made. This is one reason why there are so many. The quality is in almost all instances better than the 3 Bioware modules (NWN, SoU, HotU) since they run on a kind of "constant patching" process. If a player wants to smoke a pipe in the module - well, the creators might add a smokeable pipe!

Its all pretty hard to explain unless you go and look. There's a whole rainbow of worlds to explore and people to meet

quote:
Bear with me. Tell me what you do in an evening's play in a standard PW.

Ok... say I log on. I'm back where I logged off, unless the module has reset during that time (has to happen sometimes) in which case I'll be nearby where I logged off, but in a spot the game knows is safe. Normally, I'll still have my weapons equipped, any spells still in effect and so on. Ok, what now? I'll open up the players panel (p) and look to see who else is about. I might send some a message "Hey! I logged back on in the Swamps! Can you get a team together and come out here, because I'm solo, and there's no way I'll survive here on my own!"
5 minutes later there's a blaze of fireballs, and the rescue is there. I say thanks, and together we clear out the swamp and kill the baddies before returning to the city.
Back in the city I meet my arch rival! Some insults are thrown, and soon swords are drawn. Sadly I get hacked down in seconds, but my new friends from the swamp come to my rescue, raise me and help me win the fight. Hurrah!
They have to go to sleep now, but one of my buddies is in the city. He spots me and invites me to a party (not the dancing kind, the adventuring kind) and suggests we go to defeat the evil dragon Xxxzzzoth.

Bleh, you get the idea. Some severs would have that all happen in character. "Prithee! Mine halfling neck is near covered by the stench of this swamp water! I beg of thee, tall folks, come to my aid!" Some servers are not "Hey guys... I am like so STUCK here. I logged on in the swamp on my own"

Ah yes, people who downloaded The Sims: House Party shouldn't throw stones.

This all sounds rather good.
If a loaded stranger died and left me pots of cash (or just enough to get broadband at home), then I'd be engaging in all manner of folderol at the drop of a hat. But until such day arrives (or I get a proper pay rise), then I shall have to content myself with working my own character through bog standard NWN.

Er, it is worth taking a complete level 1 n00b to Folderol Jam? Apart from the comedy value, of course.

Well Tuberski's "difficulty" getting in made me raise that question. Also the likelihood of beginning your adventure surrounded by the lairs of monsters you couldn't hope to defeat until level 27 or whatever.
I presume that you have to import your character but cannot then take them away and upgrade them outside of the game world . That would just be a new character.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

You cannot import characters or items into Folderol, as with most servers, they only let you use characters they are sure are non-hacked.

You'll start at level 1, as does every character, or at level 2 if you know the answer to a question *winks*

As for the authentication - it just works somehow *shrugs*

As far as I understand it then you have to have a fully coded copy of all of the NWN discs to get onto Folderol. It allows you to use all of the additional features of SoU and HotU, so you have to have these expansions with the right codes to be able to play.

This is the cheapest UK price for it that I've managed to find on the net, and with free P&P then you're laughing.
