And now, for something completely different...
quote: Votes From the Dead May Still Be Counted
Sun Oct 31, 6:43 PM ET Elections - AP
By ALLEN G. BREED, Associated Press Writer
RALEIGH, N.C. - An untold number of ballots from people who have died since casting them will be counted this year because of the haphazard and cumbersome process of enforcing laws in many states to weed out these votes.
With millions of voters taking advantage of new, in-person early voting in at least 30 states this year, it's even more likely that such "ghost" votes will be counted because, in most cases, those ballots are impossible to retrieve. Besides, it could be days or weeks after the election before local officials get word someone has died.
Earlier this month, in what would be her last conscious act, 90-year-old Trixie Porter gripped a pen in her weak, trembling hand, checked the candidates of her choice and scrawled a squiggled signature on her absentee ballot.
Within an hour, the petite woman who had been suffering from heart problems lay back in her hospital bed, closed her eyes and never woke up. Her ballot arrived at her local elections board two days later, Oct. 5 — the day she died. |

These are major issues, to me and most people who live within a thousand miles of me.
Now explain how Kerry is gonna make it all better, and not worse. Isn't that where it started? |
Your stupid cows and wood are not major issues in the Presidential Election, and if you think so you are grossly unaware of what has been going on in the last 4 years. There are simply bigger issues at stake.
In any case, Bush certainly isn't going to do anything to change the situation. Kerry probably won't either, though if there is some WTO oddity then he'll probably work to correct it (given what else he wants to accomplish regarding China and the like). Still, it is a pretty minor issue, and it isn't likely to change with either candidate.

And dang right they should be able to vote.
Are you suggesting that if someone spends their last concious hours filling out a ballot to vote, then their last wishes and desires should be ignored? How disrespectful.

Because, not only are our cows and trees a part of your politics, but some of my neighbours are off in Afghanistan fighting, and bleeding, in a war due to the US being attacked. |
Which is a bigger issue than minor trade disputes. There is a lot more at stake and all you are doing is complaining about something that neither candidate is likely to change. That's why it isn't a worthwhile topic in this thread. There is political merit to the discussion, but it isn't a major issue in the current election in any sense.
I do not disregard the sacrifice of the brave Canadian soldiers, nor did I ever suggest what they do is not valued. They aren't related to the trade issue, however.

I thought the votes are projected to be very, very close... |
Undecided voters typically go to the challenger (Kerry), high voter turnouts help the Democrats and aren't handled well by polls (Kerry), cell-phone users can't be polled by traditionally phone calls (they favor Kerry), and college students are turning out in record numbers (they favor Kerry).
As the 2000 Election had Gore down by 5 points or so the day before the Election, this year the polls will be off again.
I doubt it will be nearly as close as people think it will be. If the difference is even 10,000 votes that is far larger than any fraud will be, though it might not handle the voter suppression tactics.*

*This is much larger than any potential fraud issue.

I disagree that these are 'minor' trade disputes. These 'minor' trade disputes have a large impact on a third of the population of Canada. How minor is that?
I disagree that Bush and Kerry are equal on trade. I think Kerry will be a lot worse than Bush.
And I am accutely aware of the issue of the last 4 years. What I wonder about is if the Yanks understand how it plays to a family that loses a son in Afghanistan when their trees or their cows are given a hard time at the border.
How would you take it? |
You have no evidence they will be different beyond your irrational fear of Kerry.
Read his bloody platform, why don't you!
http://www.johnkerry.com/issues/economy/trade.html
Look at what he has said on it:
http://www.issues2000.org/Internati..._Free_Trade.htm
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4993636/
Look at his record:
http://www.cato.org/dailys/08-23-04.html
Sure, he's talked about preserving jobs and such, and he'll try to do that, but he isnt going to become a protectionist. The meat of those articles shows his past record and his statements on his policy (though there is some fear-mongering in one and labor is overoptimistic in another).
The fact is that Kerry has overall supported free trade; he just wants to work to make sure there are good labor laws and environmental standards in countries we trade with. Canada has those and needn't worry.
He might not change the current situation, but Bush isn't going to do that either.
I think the future tone of U.S. military action and political action in the world is far more important. It is possible if Bush is elected the U.S. will get into a Isreal-Palestine mess; a cycle of violence that lasts decades and possibly longer.

The situation in Iraq was caused by a mistake, but it does need to be resolved to promote great world peace and prosperity. That is about the needs and desires of everyone.
You are being disingenious by suggesting the alliance doesn't look after the needs of the Canadians involved; it does. Any trade oddities are seperate from how Canadian soldiers are treated.
If anything you should be supporting Kerry on this though, since he wants more help -- and will push greatly for that help -- from other nations; that makes things safer for Canadian soldiers.

Read the links, I sent you.
It explains what it means to Kerry's platform, which is what you are really concerned about.
It wouldn't damage Canada at all, afterall, surely your environmental and labor laws are at least as good as Chile's, right?

There isn't going to be anything new that affects Canada.
Old things certainly aren't going to change at the direction of Bush, they might under Kerry (but I am certainly giving no guarantees).
The idea there is going to be more protectionism is almost pure fantasy, and the only way you can support it is by distorting Kerry's "fair trade" stance. There will certainly be nothing new that affects Canada.
If you really have evidence to the contrary that isn't fear-inspired paranoia, why don't you show it?
