Chapter 7 – Captain Ramsey, you are dismissed!
Lt. Zimmer wondered about the two cups found on the table in Officer Mahoney’s cabin.
“He was obviously celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with someone. A fellow Irish perhaps?”
“He was celebrating St. Patrick’s Day allright. But it didn’t have to be with a fellow Irish. It could have been either of his friends”, Lt. Dougherty replied.
“You are both Irish and his friend, aren’t you?” Lt. Zimmer asked.
“I am, but that’s beside the point.”
Captain Ramsey intervened.
“I think it is a very important point Bobby. We haven’t seen you around for the last half an hour. For all we know, you could have killed Mahoney and destroyed our radio in this time. Where were you during this time?”
“I was doing the inventory”, Lt. Dougherty replied.
“Not much of an alibi Bobby, and the circumstantial evidence is mounting against you”, said the Captain.
Diving Officer Dauphin spotted something on Lt. Dougherty’s uniform.
“What is this? Blood?”
“What?”
Captain Ramsey saw the blood on Lt. Dougherty’s uniform.
“How did this blood get to your uniform if you were doing inventory Bobby?”
“When I first discovered Mahoney I thought he was still alive and I tried to help him. That’s how my sleeve got blooded.”
“That’s enough Bobby! Master Chief Duke! Chief Kline! Escort Spaced Cowboy to the torpedo room where he is going to test one of the tubes.”

Captain Ramsey, Lt. Zimmer, Lt. Westergard and Master Chief Duke returned to the bridge.
“Now Lieutenant, reinsert your key inside the safety lock so we may start the countdown again”, Captain Ramsey told Lt. Zimmer.
“I will not Sir! Not until we have confirmed the message!”
“Are you mad Lieutenant? Our radio is broken and we cannot contact the command or receive another EAM.”
“I will not risk starting a full scale nuclear war just because I didn’t confirm the final order Sir. We must stand down until we can confirm the orders from our command.”
“Think about your family home Lieutenant.”
“I am thinking about them Sir and I cannot … I will not allow you to start a nuclear war that could destroy our families and our country.”
“That’s it Lieutenant. You are out of line! Chief of the Boat, arrest Lieutenant Zimmer!”
“He cannot do that Sir”, Lt. Zimmer said.
“I cannot do that Sir”, Chief of the Boat said.
“What? This is a mutiny! Lieutenant Westrguard, arrest Lieutenant Zimmer!”
“You have crossed the line Sir! I’m relieving you of your command! Chief Kline, escort the Captain to his cabin”, Lt. Zimmer said.
“What? How dare you! I will have you shot for this!” Captain Ramsey was raving.
Master Chief Duke intervened.
“You must step off the bridge Captain. You are no longer in command of this ship. Please do not resist.”
Captain Ramsey hesitated a little, but then obeyed. He just said: “You are a bunch of traitors and cowards. You have weakened your country today.” Chief Kline escorted Captain Ramsey to his cabin, locked it and placed Seaman Bennefield to guard it.

The submarine was brought up to the periscope depth and Lt. Zimmer explored the environment. He spotted a Russian destroyer and he ordered the submarine down.
“Officer Dauphin, get us down! We have to pass under the Russian destroyer unnoticed!”
Petty Officer Danny Rivetty replied.
“Officer Dauphin is not here, but I will take the sub down Sir!”
“Where is he? Miss HongHu, could you please look for him?”
“Yes Sir”, Captain’s aide replied.
She found Dauphin in Officer Mahoney’s cabin. He was lying dead, next to Mahoney, his throat slit and stabbed about a dozen times. His right hand was clenched into a fist. Shocked by the scene, HongHu fainted and she was revived later when the others came to the spot. When they opened Dauphin’s hand they found a button torn off from someone’s uniform.
