And now the ONLY Japanese electronic dictionary (Casio) has been ranked from Korean store shelves because it contains the following entry (and damn does the local english language newspaper has incompetant ****s for copy editors):

quote:

Takeshima: islets located northwest in the Sea of Japan. It has been recognized in Japan for long. It became known to Europe in 1849 when a French ship Liancourt discovered it and named it 'Liancourt Rocks.' It became Shimane Prefecture's territory in 1905. Since Korea's independence, it has been in dispute as Korea claims it. It has an area of .2 square kilometers.

There has been so much to comment on in this thread, I haven't had a chance to say that IMO AH's posts have been spot-on.

I have often been struck by how benign Chinese attitudes are towards westerners, given our recent mutual histories. In how many other countries are Americans, for example, welcomed and treated so favorably (fewer with each ongoing day of the Bush administration, I'm afraid).

It's no secret that China has a deep strain of victimhood running through its national psyche and coloring it's form of nationalistic pride. It helps explain the intensity of public actions like the current anti-Japanese protests.

Here is an excellent Salon article by respected American sinologist Orville Schell, very insightful and well-written, well worth reading if you are interested in better understanding Chinese attitudes and behavior on the international stage.

Mindseye, are the Chinese people told of American's support during the Sino-Japanese war of 1936-45? It is genuinely hard to believe that any Chinese could have anti-American feelings at all, even despite the Korean War, as the United States was there for China in its darkest hour.

The phrase "ya bi" literally means something like "low-down c*nt", but the way it's used in Chinese is probably closer to American English "f*cker" or "b*astard". It's a strong expletive, I just confirmed this with one of my students.

So my original translation of "Ya bi wang!" as "Die, f*cker!" next to Koizumi's X-ed over face was correct.

You know, I teach English to Chinese everyday, but it's not often I teach Chinese to a Chinese!

Hm, no

There's only one meaning to bi, and that is "must." Maybe there are other slang meanings, but my dictionary doesn't say.

ya could mean a bunch of things when combined into terms, such as ya tau (little girl) or shu ya (where a tree grows a branch), but it doesn't mean anything by itself.

Besides, the three characters don't make sense combined that way. It's not grammatical - or at least nobody ever writes like that.

I am not sure how big a factor that is, given that a stream of constant US meddling, interfering, finger-pointing and obstructing acts directed at China (at least as perceived, but then, perception is everything here) during the recent years. Particularly casted in the context of the US being the international hegemon.

For example, I have read several accounts of the PRC joining the WTC, and there are lots of incidents where the US tabled unreasonable demands and errected obstacles. Put that together with the recent emergence of protectionism in the US and the constant lip services the US is paying "free market." None of these goes down well.

Then there is the recent case of the US and Japan putting Taiwan Strait as part of the mutually defensive treaty "strategic objective." Such a wise move...

I doubt there is a text book in China which deals honestly with Mao's purges of "counter-revolutionaries" or is entirely frank about the horrors of the CCP's Cultural Revolution. I'm sure they also claim the Nationalists were the roote of all evil and the virtuos CCP was this perfect freedom fighting force.

China needs to clean its own house before it complains about others. People love to ***** about the US but we treat our own historical failures (slavery, segrogation, policy against the Indians) more harshly then we do other people's. We actually acknowledge and educate people about it. Can China, Japan, or Korea say the same?

It's a little less impressive when you consider that Korea has been some other nation's ***** for a large chunk of its history. For example, the Koreans were a part of the Mongol-led force that invaded in Japan in 1274 and again in 1281. They don't have to count that against their record, though; they get off the hook for being the ***** of the Mongols at the time.

But to those who just want to live their lives without politics, or who are on the right, the United States has most always been a friend of China even when China has not been a friend of the United States.

Before the outbreak of war in the '30s, was the Chinese attitude towards Japan:

1) friendly?
2) hostile?
3) friendlier than its attitudes about the Europeans?
4) less friendly than its attitudes about the Europeans.

Why?

quote:
TOKYO -- A nationalist textbook newly approved by the Tokyo government is driving the deepest wedge in Japan-China relations in decades, but few of the country's students have ever read it.

Though given away for free, the book titled "New History Textbook" is used by only 18 of 11,102 junior high schools in Japan, reflecting many teachers' concerns over its content. It has been denounced by the leading teachers' union, and is well to the right wing of mainstream public opinion.

quote:
Only 10 public and eight private junior high schools use the textbook, meaning it reaches just 0.1 percent of the 1.2 million seventh graders.

Teachers' concerns over the content have limited use of the textbook, which covers all of Japan's history. The current edition has 236 pages, only about 20 of which deal with the 1920-1945 period, the height of Japanese expansionism.

quote:
Officials say the criticism of its textbook screening process -- and decision to approve the book in question -- is unfair.

They claim screening is intended only to ensure that textbooks do not contain factual errors or express interpretations of history that go beyond what most scholars would consider defensible. It does not mean the government agrees with everything on every page, they say.

The Chinese do see the US as a model to emulate. In fact, China is becoming more and more like the US everyday, it seems. They admire power. Of course, they admire Hitler and Bill Gates for the same reasons, so I don't think the US should feel proud.

The general sense I've gotten is that most old people like the US and don't like Germany. Young people are not so fond of the US and sometimes see it as an obstacle to China, but they'll stab their best friend in the back for a chance to go to school there. But that's more about money and power than about liking the US. Both reflect the different propoganda given to each generation.
