Wow, vovan, you're eye-sight is clearly better than mine, I can't read most of the stuff in those images. I don't suppose you (or anyone else who can read the text) are willing to have a swing at the tech tree? |
Well, the fact of the matter is, I had to shrink the images some to post them. When they are blown up to full screen on the video player, you can more easily tell what it says. The problem with the tech tree is, they don't have it in the high quality videos and the long one is too fuzzy to tell what the techs are...

The interview says, that an SDK (software development kit) for game and AI will be released. An SDK is a well documented library (in binary code) with a set of functions, that can be linked to your own code and in a defined form influence the behavior of the game. It is not the source code of the game, just like the Windows SDK is not the source code of Windows.
That said, such an SDK is a great tool and most likely sufficient to mod the game at hearts content without handing out the ability to introduce bugs into the vital part of the engine. The said DLL you can create is a good compromise between bug prevention and moddability. |
SDK is probably the most abused term in the history of computer gaming, I've seen it being used to refer to anything from a scenario editor right down to the full source code. If Soren explains it as "basically the game and the AI code that people can use to compile a seperate DLL", then he *is* referring to the actual source code. Not the full game, I'm sure: the graphics engine and network code and stuff like that probably won't be included (Gamebryo is a licensed product so Firaxis couldn't release that code if they wanted to), but as long as Firaxis keeps supporting the game (as opposed to what Activision did) that's not the sort of code fans will want to change anyway. But IF the entire core of the game itself is exposed (big if, but that *is* what it sounds like), the possibilities are literally endless...
Anyone wanna convert Civ4 into a football manager?

Can you compile those into a DLL, as Soren specifically said? |
Yeah. When you write your own code, all it needs is the header files to compile, and some binary files to link. It really doesn't need any of the actual source code of the game.

What building is it supposed to represent?
Any ideas? |
Might be placeholder art. Could be something like the Pentagon or something.

Hmm... It would, indeed, appear that way from the video... When he selects a tech, only the lump sum payment and other techs and "declare war on..." options remain available. And when he selects Corn, only GPT and resources are avable for choosing... It would suck for them to limit us that way. Maybe you need some tech advance in order to try to trade goods for tech, for example? Or else maybe it depends on the nature of your relations with the other nation... Or your trading civic model thing...
