Take out a loan on it and invest it ?

I'm not sure what else you could do apart from "exhibiting" it. I think some firms rented paintings and stuff for interiors, rather than buy.... no idea how this works in detail though.

"I’m surprised to see that Coca-Cola is at the bottom between all those predators and telco and IT household names."

Just a timing thing. If they would have used 1991 as the base, the stock quintupled over the next 10 years (17.5% per annum), and it would have been in the top 20 probably. That points out the weaknesses of the report. But for all of the false indicators, there are some companies that are correctly identified as having destroyed an amazing amount of shareholder value over the years (Xerox, AT&T, Lucent).

Coca-Cola chart attached.

For comparison purposes, AT&T (ignore pre-'85, because of the breakup). This shows how not to run a company...

I don't know why we have waste money supporting the steel industry just because the Euros do. Let the Euros, Koreans and Brazilians bleed each other dry.

"asinine" ?

"I don't know why we have waste money supporting the steel industry just because the Euros do. Let the Euros, Koreans and Brazilians bleed each other dry."

Steel subsidies have been pretty much phased out here after the Commission finally took the state aid rules seriously. What I don't understand is the fragmented situation in the US steel industry. Bethlehem steel as one of the biggest US makers has an annual output of 5 million tons or so ? Wtf ?

Well, the industry has had hard times for as long as I've been alive. There was a brief respite a couple of years ago when everybody moved to the mini-mill approach.

A lot of jobs/pensions/health care are attached to the industry. That's why it makes political sense to see the industry through its toughest times.

But I don't like that approach all. I don't know how anybody can keep a straight face and say that the steel industry will make a profit in five years time after we will have pissed all that money away. It's just a sh!tty business to be in, so let everybody else be in it.

So what's the deal? Roland says Europe stopped subsidizing the steal industry. US says they still do. Other sources do not really contradict the US. What are the real numbers?

Sometimes, the right thing to do is to just let them die.

Back this one time I was in the sub and had just fired off some Tomahawks, came into port with this hottie from Sri Lanka, made me realize the effects of the Manchurian relationship principle.

United Steel's strategic direction needs to focus more on relationships with raw materials vendors rathar than cutting corners on production quality.

[Insert 16 year old poster name here] are you always such a crybaby?

And who contradicts me ? Btw, "steal industry" - like Wallstreet ?...

I'm not even sure the US claims that we subsidise steel - all I saw is they are whining about "imports". With their huge cost basis and small scales, US steelmakers don't look too competitive...

Put an end to popups!

Well, as I was thinking this morning, when I was making my history exams, I have to draw a time-line ? I’ve spend half a night unravelling the genealogical tree of the Habsburgs and finding out whether it was Filips the Bold or Filips the Good who installed the States General in Flanders and I have to draw a time-line?

Anyway, the lines were crooked, as I didn’t had a ruler with me, I wasn’t able to divise the line properly into the demanded 9 ages, I crossed out half of what I wrote and I didn’t had enough space to stuff the Treaty of Munster somewhere in there so I drew a wavy line with an arrow all the way down to the bottom of the page referring to the damn treaty, thereby bringing the mess to perfection.

I read a funny thing the other day. The big chief of the Russian central bank said Russians shouldn’t use euros because he's unconvinced of the currency's stability. It fluctuates too much versus the greenback.

"thou shalt not attempt to see logic in the currency markets"

Oh there is logic to the madness. People want to play another round of Al's pyramid scheme (this time it's called "V-shaped-recovery" or "new bull market"), and need dollars to do that. And the speculators are pissed that the ECB doesn't join their game. Poor lads.

The Fed has managed to **** up markets to a degree even I wouldn't have thought they'd want to or be able to. This also means it's accident time. Just look at the 10 and 30 year bond yields after the treasury sheenanigans.....

Col:

"...whether it was Filips the Bold or Filips the Good who installed the States General in Flanders"

"installed" ? Shouldn't they be older than that ?

Well, I suppose "introduce" is a better word. I know it’s odd that it happened from the top but Filips the Bold did so to counterweigh the dominance of the cities, who overwhelmed the nobility and the clergy. (being the capitalist hell-hole it was)

Besides, I didn't though such assemblies are that much older?

Depends on what kind of institutionalization you look at. Flanders may be special though because as you say the cities got rid of most feudal bonds...

SFA is a set-top box manufacturer. They hold about 1/3rd of the digital cable market (selling about 4 million boxes a year). Acquiring part of Barco.

Steady company. Consistent money-maker. No debt. Sufficient cash. Gross margins holding (responsive SG&A reductions).

Revs took a hit last quarter. Tough market. Deceleration of transition from analog>digital.

Overall, it seems worthy of further research, especially wrt which cable companies use their boxes and which cable companies are taking over the others. Of course, we would all like to see friendlier valuations.
