You did? Otavalo (SP?) was a unique town... I lived in Quito for two years. During some chaotic times... like when Mahuad was overthrown by the military... now Ecuador is doing really well economically, but still has massive corruption problems.

I disagree with you on Ecuador's economics. It plans to use United State's currency until 2050. A country that cannot rely on its own currency is hardly doing well economically in my opinion.

Wiglaf's argument seems to be:

I can't read or name any Spanish authors, because I cannot speak or read Spanish. Therefore, there are no Spanish authors, or writers writing in Spanish, worthy of mention.

You're going to rule out a lot of the world's great literature(s) that way. Your comment reminds me of the post in another forum where someone claimed that they knew of no Celtic culture around today. Which would be a great surprise to anyone familiar with literature in Breton, or Erse, or Cymric.

As for making league tables of writers- it makes an interesting diversion, but saying there is no Spanish epic because Spain didn't produce the Iliad or the Odyssey is absurd. Oh, gosh, the Ancient Greeks didn't produce any novels! Or short stories! Or five act plays! Or haikus! Yeah, that Euripides couldn't compete with Tom Clancy...

For the record, jasev, Wuggy accused me of being anti-English or Latin, or anti-human, or something like that - when I wasn't even here to set the record straight. I don't know how anything I said could be misconstrued this way, but Winky decided so, this it was true.

On a side note, I just got a popup saying I had a new PM. It was from the Wagster, but had been deleted by him. I wonder what he could have said? Maybe he had such a convincing argument that I would actually think he'd been reading my posts.

Ok, this is definitely not a serious thread, so I will add something else to see what Wiglaf has to say to this question I have -- just for some comic relief and because I'm bored.

I am taking a course in History of Ancient Philosophy right now, Wiglaf, and we are suppose to read the book, "The Republic" by Plato.

Now, I lived in Ecuador for three and half months this past summer to begin studying fundamental Spanish.

Gee -- I'm interested in Plato's written works AND I am interested in learning Spanish as a second language.

How do you reconcile that contradiction -- at least, this is some kind of contradiction in whatever world you live in.

This should be funny if Wiggy responds to this.

To each culture, obviously their native language is the most important. Maori language is fundamentally important for the Maori.

But I think what we mean, Caligastia, is that a language like Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, or English are more globally important. We're not advocating to learn Maori, simply because that is not as globally important as Spanish, for example.

I made the comparison because in both cases people have to learn two languages to function in daily life. This is a poor ideal to have IMO. Surely if you want to have a people that is united they must have a common language.

Maori is the New Zealander equivilant of Spanish, Mr. Fun. I'm guessing that a signifigant minority in that country speaks it, which puts it at the same level as Spanish in terms of importance for the average citizen of New Zealand.
