Because a lot of money (tourism and work) comes through those area. Fingerprinting everyone that comes through would make the border crossing come to a standstill (instead of the 5 minutes it takes to go to Canada, etc.). Many people just won't bother coming over anymore.

To say nothing of the thousands of Canadians who cross the border every day to work in the Detroit area... nurses in particular. You want to fingerprint 'em every time they come over the Ambassador Bridge? Makes sense, I suppose... everyone knows that there's no one more dangerous to a free society than a Canadian nurse...

I would think, Guy, that someone who works in the US like those Canadian nurses you mention could be issued some sort of pass (after they are checked out and cleared the first time around). Then again, that would require common sense, and we're talking about the INS, so maybe not.

Chris 62, The equal protection clause applies to citizens, but does it applies to visiting aliens as a condition for entry? What if there is a valid reason for the unequal treatment and a compelling governmental need?

We haven't gone this far yet, but I can see a wholesale ban on visa's for aliens from selected countries being constitutional.

How about : legalize drugs, tax the hell out of 'em, and use the money saved by ending the "war on drugs" to pay for rehab programs, and the money from the taxes to pay for a massive increase in FBI/CIA/NSA anti-terror budgets? Just a thought

b) 30% of our economy is in trade with you. I can't believe that number is any lower for the border states on your side. Delays are death to road traffic and tourism. IIRC, over 500 000 people cross the border every day, along with a billion dollars in trade.
